The Principal’s Pen

The dictionary defines joy as “a feeling of great pleasure and happiness”. I believe true joy is more. Pleasure and happiness are fleeting, based on conditions at the time. Joy is deeper; it’s more a state of being. It’s possible to have joy even when you’re not happy.

With election fatigue continuing on and COVID fatigue escalating, it might be hard to feel joy! Believe me, I get that! Even in the face of challenges I can have joy because of who I am in Christ. What God has done for me, and is doing for me, helps me to have joy, even when I don’t feel it. So, to help you, and to help me, focus on joy, I share 5 Bible verses and what they remind us about joy:

Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. Psalm 51:12

This psalm, spoken by King David in repentance for his sins, reminds me that joy is rooted in God’s forgiveness of my sins and His gift of salvation. My identity as a forgiven child of God gives me joy!

Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy. Psalm 96:12

Let the mountains sing together for joy. Psalm 98:8

Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Psalm 100:1

These 3 psalms remind me that God’s creation sings and reflects joy to the Creator. The beauty of God’s creation on display this fall has brought me joy!

A cheerful look brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones. Proverbs 15:30

Are you good at smiling with your eyes? Wearing masks and maintaining distance from others has made it hard to give, and receive, a cheerful look. The connections I have, even through a mask, brings me joy!

I could go on and on. The Bible is full of verses about joy. I hope that these verses have been a blessing to you in reminding you that the joy of the Lord is your strength. Nehemiah 8:10.

St. John Lutheran School Receives Special Gift

The Lutheran Foundation has supported St. John Lutheran School through regular and special grants for many years. This year, recognizing the impacts of COVID on Lutheran schools around the Fort Wayne area, The Lutheran Foundation has just announced a gift of over $1,000,000 to the 19 Lutheran schools in Northeast Indiana. Based on current enrollment, St. John is receiving $34,250 from The Lutheran Foundation. This gift is to support operational expenses.

We rejoice in this blessing of God through The Lutheran Foundation. It is a reminder, in a very uncertain time, of the certainty of God's love and provision!

Thanksgiving Break Next Week

Just a reminder that St. John will not be in session November 25-27 to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Abigail Hale, Bryson Shire, Tyson Kintz, Andrew Stahl, and Lincoln Moser. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

The King is Coming!

Operation Christmas Child

Please consider putting together a shoebox full of toys and school supplies for a needy child in another part of the world! This is a great way for you to teach your child the joy of giving! Don't forget to include a letter and even a picture if you'd like. All boxes should be delivered to the school office no later than Sunday morning, November 22. Unfortunately, any boxes delivered after that time will NOT be delivered as we have a strict deadline to meet. The child receiving your gift will be blessed with toys, but more importantly shown the love of Jesus through you!

As a part of the spiritual formation we provide children, our students are preparing to help lead worship during the Advent season! Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas. Grades 5 through 8 will lead the worship on Wednesday, Dec. 2. Grades 2 through 4 will lead the worship service on Wednesday, December 9. Preschool, Kindergarten, and Grade 1 will lead the worship service on Wednesday, December 16. The services have been prepared in such a way that students from different cohorts will not be mixed together, even in leading the

Due to COVID and our inability to host the large numbers of people who attend these services, we will present these services completely online. The services will be recorded during the school day and the recordings will go live at 7:00 on the Wednesday evening. We encourage families to set aside these evenings now to worship together. We also encourage you to share the link (coming in future Banners and emails) with family members outside of the area. Finally, we encourage you to watch all three services as they all build off each other (something that was hard to do with in-person services). While we will again miss being physically together, we can still be together as we worship in this way.

PE Classes Move Indoors

With the temperatures dropping it is now necessary to move our PE classes indoors. Having children dressed warmly enough to be outside and yet able to move and participate in PE activities is becoming more difficult. We will make the change to indoor PE following our Thanksgiving Break. Other precautions like distancing and extra sanitation will still be in place.

Fitness Fact

Exercising with a friend helps build the relationship. That shared experience on both good and bad days builds a deeper relationship and the stronger relationship helps keep you motivated to exercise. Definitely a win-win!

Inclement Weather

As the likelihood of inclement weather increases, a few reminders about the procedure for school closings are in order. St. John will follow the East Noble School Corporation. When their decision is made you will be notified through a ParentAlert text and the following media outlets: WPTA, WISE, WANE, WBCL, WAWK, WLAB, and STAR. You will see or hear St. John Lutheran, Kendallville, listed on all these media outlets. The option exists for school to be closed, on 2-hour delay, or on 3-hour delay, which pushes dismissal time back to 3:55. Parents must always use discretion, whether we are in session or on delay, to determine if their own drive to school is too hazardous and they need to wait before coming in to school.

Report Cards

The 1st Trimester ended on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Report cards are coming home with K-8 students today. Report Cards will also be emailed home to 3rd-8th grade parents.
