The Principal’s Pen

Our Advent services this year focus on the Advent wreath and the candles and their meanings. The first Advent service, led by the Kindergarten through second grade classes, focused on hope. We learned that there are many things we hope for each day or week. But, hoping for nice weather is much different than hope centered in Jesus. Hope in Jesus is a certainty based on Jesus’s life, death, and resurrection. It’s a hope we can count on.

Our second service, led by our third through fifth grade classes, focused on peace. We often think of peace as no war or fighting. We will never see that kind of peace here on earth. But, peace rooted in Christ means that even in the midst of turmoil, we can have peace. That’s hard to understand, and it’s only found in Christ.

Our final service (this week, please join us!) will be led by our preschool classes and our sixth through eighth grade classes. In this service we will focus on both joy and love. Friends, good food, presents, and family all bring us happiness. Joy is much deeper. It is based on our relationship with Jesus and not simply on what does or doesn’t happen to us. We will also focus on love. Instead of focusing on who we love, Christmas focuses on Who loves us! “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son.” (John 3:16) God’s love is what we truly celebrate this Christmas season!

My prayer is that the message of our Advent services is real to you this Christmas. Jesus was born as a baby as a gift of God’s great love for you. He lived, died, and rose again to give you joy, peace, and hope. May your Christmas celebration be filled with these gifts!

Advent Worship

Thank you to our Third through Fifth Graders for leading us in a beautiful Advent service last week. Your message of peace in Jesus gives us great comfort and encouragement. Please join us this week for our remaining Advent worship service, with our Preschoolers and 6th-8th Graders leading.

We are videotaping each service and are determining the best way to make them available to interested families.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Information on signing up for our 2nd Trimester Parent/Teacher Conferences came home last Thursday. As we tried with our 1st Trimester Conferences, these conferences will be split over two weeks and will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and Tuesday, Jan. 21, starting at 2:15. School will dismiss at 1:55 these days. Progress Reports will be given out at these conferences. After the conferences there will be 4-5 more weeks to make necessary changes before the end of the trimester. As we also tried with our 1st Trimester conferences, parents will be invited to fill out a short survey after the conference to provide input for the teacher and principal. Please watch for the conference sign-up information and return it BEFORE CHRISTMAS BREAK so that we can schedule your conference. We look forward to these conferences and a meaningful time to discuss the growth of your child!

Science Fair

Inquiry, investigation, problem solving, research, time management, public speaking: all of these skills and more can be built through working on a Science Fair project! This is a great opportunity for children to explore an area that they are interested in. Information on the St. John Science Fair has been made available to students in grades 1-8. Your questions can be answered by your teacher or by our Science Fair chairperson, Don Schroeder. The projects will be due in February and the full schedule is available in the packet. We encourage all students to participate in this worthwhile event!

Fitness Fact

Trying to say “no” to leftover holiday goodies? Kill two birds with one stone by drinking 8 ounces of water before eating every meal and snack. You feel fuller and less likely to give in, and your body is well hydrated. It’s a Win-Win!!
