March 26, 2018 Number 30

From The Principal’s Pen

Several years ago, we decided to hold school on Good Friday. Truth be told, I think one of the reasons that first year was because we needed to schedule some snow make-up days. You may think it strange – why would a Christian school be in session on this important day of the church year? Even public schools have Good Friday off! What we found that first year is that we could provide students with worship experiences and learning experiences to help them better understand what this day is all about by having them here at school rather than them being at home.

This year, we will spend most of the morning (from about 8:15 until about 11:15) experiencing 2 worship learning experiences. First, we will begin with a special chapel worship in which we will hear from 3 people who witnessed Jesus’ death. Second, our classes will rotate through various Stations of the Cross, where they will be able to experience artifacts to help them understand Jesus’ last day. The students will learn about Jesus’ suffering and death through objects like dice, vinegar, nails, a crown of thorns, a whip, and other things. We believe this approach is most beneficial in helping our students understand the importance of what we call Good Friday.

We do not want these school day activities to take the place of your family observation of Good Friday and Easter Sunday. We hope you will worship together as a family this weekend, whether at St. John (our worship schedule can be found later in this Banner) or at your church. We also welcome parents to join us for any or all of our time together on Good Friday. As always, if you have questions, please ask!

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

School Choice (Voucher) Students

Parents of students applying for a School Choice (voucher) Scholarship for the 2018-19 school year need to come in to the office to complete your application for next year. The process takes about 10 minutes with Mrs. Thiem. You will need a copy of your 2017 tax return, unless you receive other forms of public assistance. We will have verification of that if you do.

Track Has Begun

Our track team, open to students in 4th-8th grades, has begun practicing! Practices are generally held on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The team can often be found practicing in the parking lot and alley. If you arrive after 3:15 to pick up your child from Extended Care or another activity, please drive with extra caution in the parking lot!

Hearing Screens

Students in kindergarten, first grade, fourth grade, and seventh grade will be undergoing hearing screenings on Wednesday, April 11, during the school day. Students in other grades may also be screened by teacher recommendation. Parents, you are welcome to request that your child also be screened. Just let Mrs. Thiem know and they will be placed on the list.

Tuition Assistance

St. John Lutheran School is a ministry of St. John Lutheran Church. As such, every child’s tuition is supported through the church. St. John does not want any child to miss out on the Lutheran education we provide because of family finances. We have several avenues of tuition assistance available to families in need. Families are asked to complete an application for tuition grant and aid. The only application available for this year is online and can be accessed at www.factstuitionaid.com. Please contact the school office with questions.

Breakfast Price Change

After a recent inspection and review by a Federal Hot Lunch Representative we were told that we needed to raise our breakfast price. We tried to see if we could avoid doing this, but we do not have a choice. We were told to raise our price by 55 cents. However, in order to avoid passing such a large increase on to our parents, we are going to subsidize some of that. Effective on Wednesday, March 14, the breakfast price will increase to $1.45.

Remember that in addition to the Box Tops for Education, we also collect points from Aunt Millie’s and Tyson products. Please place them in the collection bin on the wall of the church lobby. Thanks!

Enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year for both our returning parents and for new parents is now open. You can re-enroll your child for the coming year by accessing the re-enrollment packet in ParentsWeb. Teacher Search Update

Last week, St. John congregation issued a Divine Call to one of our teacher candidates and was informed of other actions taken by the School Board for other staffing openings. Here are the actions taken in securing teachers for next year:

Divine Call to Miss Christina Warnier to be our next Kindergarten teacher. Miss Christina Warnier will be visiting on April 7-9. She will be at school on April 9 as we return from Spring Break. Please talk the opportunity to say hi and welcome her!

Contract offered to Miss Ashley Ort to be our next 1st Grade teacher.

Contract offered to Mrs. Alisha Mast to continue as our Preschool teacher.

Recommendation to Lutheran Special Education Ministries to issue a Divine Call to

Miss Sarah Koch to be our next Resource Room teacher.

Please pray that God would direct each of these individuals and lead them to accept our offers and join us.

Feeling Anxious?

Anxiety is something that we all experience from time to time. But, for some, it can be debilitating. Crosswinds (a Christian counseling service that a few of our families have partnered with) is hosting a seminar on anxiety at the Cole Center Family YMCA. The seminar, “Living with Anxiety” will be on Tuesday, April 10, from 6:00-8:00. Please consider attending this informative meeting.

Hidden Falls Summer Camp Opportunity

Common Grace Ministries is responsible for managing the Red Kettle Campaign and overseeing the spending of the funds raised within Noble County. Under Salvation Army guidelines, they are able to assist schools with Tools for Schools and camp opportunities. They are reaching out to school systems who actively participated in the bell ringing for the year with camp opportunities. Because over $40,000 was raised in 2017, they have the capability of sending 20 students from Noble County to the Salvation Army Camp near Bedford, Indiana.

Common Grace pays the camp fee for each student (nearly $500 per student). The family is responsible for the application fee and transportation to and from the camp. If you are interested in this opportunity, please see Mrs. Thiem for an application.

Another Summer Camp Opportunity

Oak Farm Montessori School also runs a summer camp program. Information can be found at www.oakfarm.org/programs/summer-camp. A few brochures are also available in the office.

April is here and it’s time to think spring!

I’ve got some ideas of things you should bring.

The kids like small wind-up toys, or so I am told

At dollar stores everywhere you’ll find they are sold.

If a wind-up is not on your list to buy

Then check out the brochure with other items to try.

Ask God to help pick the one that’s just right

He’s already got the recipient in His sight!

Again, I ask you to help fill a shoebox

To show a child in need that OUR JESUS ROCKS!

They’ll feel your love from so far away

Your little gift will make their day!

Anything else that you think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well.

In the lobby you’ll find it upon the floor

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!
