The Principal’s Pen

As we celebrate Thanksgiving this week we take time to give thanks to God for all the blessings He gives to us. Perhaps this litany of praise will be useful to you as you gather with friends and family this week to celebrate!

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The eyes of all look to You, O Lord, and You give them their food at the proper time: You open Your hand and satisfy the desire of every living thing.

For the gift of this day and the opportunity to give You praise: Glory to You, O Lord!

For the love and warmth of family and friends, both those gathered here and those gathered elsewhere, and most of all for those gathered to the Eternal Home: Glory to You, O Lord!

For the good gift of children and grandchildren to nurture in Your love and fear; for the blessing of hearth and home: Glory to You, O Lord!

For the joyful noise of infants cooing and children at play and for the honor of serving them, knowing they are beloved by You: Glory to You, O Lord!

For the food You so graciously provide us and for the joy of feasting and playing together: Glory to You, O Lord!

For the sufferings You are pleased to send us, for they purify us from selfishness and remind us of the one thing needful, Your eternal kingdom: Glory to You, O Lord!

And finally for those things for which we are most thankful: the sweet comfort of Your Gospel, the forgiveness of all our sins by the blood of our Lord Jesus, the promise of our resurrection to eternal life; for the joyful companionship afforded by the Church; for Your Word that is a lamp to our feet and light to our path; for the gifts of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper; for our pastors and everyone who faithfully serve to us Your best and highest gifts: Glory to You, O Lord!

Just a reminder that St. John will not be in session November 22-24 to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Kendallville Christmas Parade

We look forward to many of our students and parents joining us for the Kendallville Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 2. The parade kicks off at 1:00 at North Side Elementary and ends at the American Legion on Main Street. A permission slip will be coming home today. Please return it if you are planning to participate. Parent helpers are also needed to assemble our float. Please indicate your ability to help on the permission slip or call the office. Please drop off candy donations in the office for us to use in the parade.

Elementary Spell Bowl!!

Congratulations to St. John’s Elementary Spell Bowl team, who competed in the regional Spell Bowl here at North Side Elementary last Thursday. The team scored 23 points, which earned them 1st place in their division. Special thanks to Mrs. Schroeder, our faithful Spell Bowl coach.

Team members were: Lilly Moser, Ashlynn Myers, Trey Warren, Lex Moser, Naomi Schroeder, and Olivia Tibbs.

Congratulations Elementary Spell Bowl team members!!! We are proud of you!!

Congratulations LEGO Team

After months of hard work our Lego Team competed last Saturday at McCutcheon High School in Lafayette. The team had a successful day and did a great job representing our school.. The team was led by 8th graders Brenton Klopfenstein and Joseph Erne, and also Kyle McKenzie, Matthew McKinley, Braxton Cheesman, Lex Moser, Trey Warren, Brayden Schott, Briggs Cheesman, Kaitlyn McKenzie, and Aiden Hoffman. Special thanks goes to Coaches Gill and Walz for all their hard work with the team.

The theme of this year’s Lego Competition was Hydro Dynamics. Our team chose to focus their project on a better filtering system to reduce wastewater from our homes.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Maddison Harlan, Trae Mossman, Bryston Williams, Hunter Shire, Evan Cope, Taryn Haines, and Riann Ramer. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Small Group Training

Join us during the Bible Study hour (9:15-10:15) on November 19, 26. Learn how easy it is to start a Grow Group or a Reach Group and find others who you can partner with to launch a group. People often think it’s too hard to start a group or that they don’t have the training. But, it’s not about training and skill; it’s about faith and trusting God. It’s about knowing that Growing Tall in Christ and Reaching All With Christ is done through community with other Christians and a small group is essential to that growth.

Join us for the training and trust that Christ will put you in the right place!

Inclement Weather

As the likelihood of inclement weather increases, a few reminders about the procedure for school closings are in order. St. John will follow the East Noble School Corporation. When their decision is made you will be notified through a ParentAlert call and the following media outlets: WPTA, WISE, WANE, WBCL, WAWK, WLAB, and STAR. You will see or hear St. John Lutheran, Kendallville, listed on all these media outlets. The option exists for school to be closed, on 2-hour delay, or on 3-hour delay, which pushes dismissal time back to 3:55. Parents must always use discretion, whether we are in session or on delay, to determine if their own drive to school is too hazardous and they need to wait before coming in to school.

RenWeb ParentsWeb Reminder

Automatic email notifications are set for students who reach 6, 8, or 10 tardies or absences in the trimester. These emails will come directly to your inbox should your child reach one of these levels. The full attendance policy is found on p. 5-6 of the Parent Handbook.

We hope that this feature is useful in keeping you up to date on your child’s attendance.

Report Cards

The 1st Trimester ended on Friday, Nov. 10. Report cards are coming home with K-8 students today. Report Cards will also be emailed home to 3rd-8th grade parents.

eLearning Feedback

Thank you to everyone who returned the eLearning survey after our planned eLearning Day on Oct. 27. We had 73 surveys returned – a fantastic response! A letter is coming home today with some more details regarding our use of eLearning as the year progresses.

‘Funding the Ministry’ Presentations

Thank you to those school parents and church members who attended one of the Funding the Ministry presentations. A letter will come next week with an overview of the results and information on specific possible ideas that the School Board and Church Council will be looking into. We encourage and welcome your questions, comments, and input as we continue to look at ways to be the best stewards of the ministry God has entrusted to us.

These students and their families will be prayed for this week

Isaac Bennett and Mikayla Bolinger

And for next week

Nathaniel Bontrager, Anna Conrad, Dallas Dean,

Fyodor Hayden, and Katelyn James

Christmas Gift Collection

While the holidays can be an especially joyous time for most of us, it can be a time of sadness for a child of a needy family. To help in this cause, we will be taking a gift collection to be given to needy children of our school and congregation. This is strictly a voluntary donation.

Just after Thanksgiving, we will place ornaments on a Christmas tree in our school. Each ornament will have written on it either the name of a specific toy or a suggested type of gift certificate for clothing which would be enjoyed by one of our families. (We have switched to gift certificates for clothing rather than the purchase of actual clothing.)

If the item to be purchased is a toy, purchase the toy, wrap the gift, then tape the ornament on the front of the package. If you choose to purchase a gift certificate, simply place the certificate inside the envelope you take from the tree and return it to the school office. We will see that it gets to the family for whom it was intended.

It’s impossible for us to truly know the needs of all of our families. We have contacted various families that we think could use some special help this Christmas. If you were not contacted, and need help, please speak with Mr. Walz.

We feel this is a great opportunity to teach the children that the true joy of Christmas is in the spirit of giving, and it will also bring joy and Christ’s love to those with whom we are sharing.
