St. John Lutheran School

October 30, 2017 Number 11

The Principal’s Pen

I’d like to continue looking at the Reformation started by Martin Luther 500 years ago and what it means for us.

SOLA FIDE

FAITH ALONE

Last week we learned that Martin Luther came to understand that salvation only comes by God’s grace which is a free gift from God to all people. This week we focus on Faith Alone, Luther’s understanding that salvation is possible only through faith in Jesus. You see, God’s grace is available to all people. But, that grace comes alive when we have faith. And here’s the great part – faith is also a free gift from God! Lutherans believe that there is nothing we do to come to faith, it is God’s gift through the working of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus declares "no one can come to Me (believe in Me) unless it is granted him by the Father." John 6:65

“I believe that I cannot be my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Spirit has called me by the Gospel.” Luther’s explanation to the 3rd Article of the Apostle’s Creed

The Christian church in Luther’s day was heavily focused on the laws, rules, and teachings of the Pope and church leaders. It was heavily focused on what the people needed to do in order to receive God’s forgiveness and be saved. Thank God for Martin Luther, and others like him, who God led to return the focus to God as revealed in the Bible. 500 years later, we are blessed to be able to do the same!

SCRIPTURE ALONE – GRACE ALONE - FAITH ALONE

If you don’t know the answer to this question, please plan now to attend any 1 of 3 “Funding the Ministry” Presentations. Women of St. John Fall/Winter Festival

Saturday, November 4 - 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Plan to attend the annual Festival organized by the women of our congregation THIS SATURDAY! There will be lots of gently-used Christmas items, jewelry, baked goods, and a delicious luncheon. The Women of St. John purchase the Bibles for our fourth graders each year, and have done a myriad of other things to improve our facilities here at St. John, so your support of their event is very much appreciated!

Check out the items for sale on the Silent Auction tables in the church lobby. All proceeds will benefit the Women of St. John and the great work they do around our building and for our students. Take a moment and make a bid or two please! Bids close on Saturday at the Festival.

Academic Festival: November 11, 2017

Academic Festival is next Saturday, Nov. 11! We will welcome over 100 students from St. Paul’s, Bremen; Trinity, Sturgis; St. Mary, Avilla; Emmaus, Ft. Wayne; and St. John. The deadline for entering this great event is this Wednesday, Nov. 1. If you haven’t told your teacher you are participating, do so now. Coming home next week will be a schedule of events and a listing of who is in what events. Also, coming home next week will be a listing of volunteers and duties. If you signed up earlier in the year we will assign you a duty and be calling to make sure you can still help. More helpers are needed to make this fun day a reality. Please contact the office and let us know you can help!

Please pray…

These students and their families will be prayed for this week: Teegyn Schmidt, Jonah Slater, Mason Wysong, Ireland Blake, and Abigail Hale

Little Saints Night

Little Saints Night was a rousing success for all the little princesses, ninjas, superheroes, cowboys, policemen, clowns, and more who attended. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate as a school family in a safe environment. Thanks to all the parents who donated candy. Thanks also to the parents, alumni, and students (too many to name individually) who helped set up, run events, and clean up. Special thanks to MATT and DESTINY JIMENEZ for organizing this event and spending countless hours making sure it ran smoothly!

First Trimester Ends

Next Friday, Nov. 10, marks the end of the first trimester. Look for report cards to be sent home on Monday, November 20.

Pastries with Parents

Please set aside some time on Friday, Nov. 17, from 7:00-7:45 A.M., to join us for some morning treats. Scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving, the teachers are hosting this event as a way of saying thank you to our families for being here at St. John. We look forward to hosting you and giving you the opportunity to have a special treat with your children at school that morning.

Jennie Williamson Concert at Central Lutheran

Central Lutheran School invites you to experience Christian artist, Jennie Williamson, in concert on Friday, November 3 at 6:30pm. This FREE event for families of all ages will be held in Central’s new gymnasium. Jennie travels all across the country sharing her music and message to Pastors, teachers, moms and dads, men and women, and boys and girls. With selling over 750,000 CDs, it is estimated that Jennie has touched the lives of over 2 million people! Make plans now to attend! Central Lutheran is located at 900 Green Street in New Haven.

INK CARTRIDGE COLLECTION

Do you work in a place that would allow you to put a box in a prominent place to collect used printer cartridges? If so, we’d appreciate your help in doing so! Thanks for your help in keeping a bit of trash out of our landfill and helping our school earn money as well! See Mrs. Thiem if you have any questions! THANK YOU!!

Food Drive

To coordinate with our chapel offering collection this trimester, we are now receiving non-perishable food items for the Friendship Food Pantry here in Kendallville. Food items will be accepted through November 10th. Please think about this collection the next time you are shopping for your own family and pick up an extra item or two – something your family would like!! Too often we see expired items end up in our collection – items that your family doesn’t want and no other family will want either. Think of what someone else would like and give from your heart to make this a great collection for our local pantry. Thank you!!!!

Mad Ants Get Fit Challenge

Recently we welcomed the Mad Ant to St. John to kick off the Mad Ant Get Fit Challenge. This challenge encourages our students to spend 30 minutes per day being active. This involves any out-of-school activity. In return for being active for 30 minutes per day for 30 days, the students can earn a free ticket to a Mad Ants game (and discounted tickets for everyone else in the family). Details were sent home with the students. We encourage all of our students to participate in this great challenge!

The $coop On $crip!

What is Generic Scrip?

We’d like to let you know about what we call “Generic Scrip.” Generic Scrip is like a universal gift card you can purchase that can be redeemed or exchanged for any scrip card. It can be purchased for any quantity. It can be redeemed only here at St. John. Generic Scrip is most often used between St. John School or Church families and is a popular pastor or teacher gift. You are welcome to give Generic Scrip to those outside of the St. John family, but it is important that you inform anyone you give it to that they must bring it to St. John for redemption before they shop. Also, you may wish to provide them with an order form so they can be aware of what type of cards they can use it for.

Giving the gift of Generic Scrip may also be a good way for you to introduce Scrip to your family and friends and encourage them to continue buying it on your behalf.

T-Shirts for Sale

If you missed your chance at ordering a “WALK ON” St. John T-shirt, check with Mrs. Thiem. A few children’s sizes are still available.

Do You Love Christmas?

While Halloween isn’t even here yet, we are thinking about Christmas! The Kendallville Christmas Parade is Saturday, Dec. 2, with the theme “Christmas Toyland”. We would love for St. John to be a part of the parade as we have been in the last few years. This is a great community event for us to participate in and a great opportunity for us to share the true meaning of Christmas with our community! We have one parent who has offered to help, can we get a couple more? It doesn’t have to be a major production, and we can give guidance and assistance. Please contact the office if you are willing to help out!

Kroger Community Rewards

Our latest check from the Kroger Community Rewards program was $444.54. That represents just a portion of registered shoppers’ purchases from July 1 through September 30. If you have not yet registered your card, won’t you consider doing so? Call 800-576-4377 and choose the Community Rewards and select option 3. Our school’s NPO number is 10129 when you are asked for that number.

SGO Donations – A Double Blessing!

Your gift to The Lutheran SGO on behalf of St. John blesses our church and school and blesses you! The blessing for our church and school comes as tuition assistance funds to help needy families send their kids to receive a Christian education here at St. John. A number of our students have received these scholarships over the past few years. The blessing for the donor is that half of your gift is returned to you in the form of a credit on your Indiana state taxes. Donations can come from individuals or businesses and can be cash, stock, and even things like corn and soybeans! You can give online at www.lutheransgo.org or paper donation forms are available in the office. See Mr. Walz or Mrs. Thiem for more information on this opportunity to be a double blessing!

Veteran’s Day Service – Friday, November 10th

We will be hosting a service to honor our servicemen and women, both active and veterans, on Friday, November 10th, at 10:00 a.m. Please invite family and friends who are serving, or have served, so we can express our thanks for their service to our country. A sheet of cards to pay tribute to those dear to us was sent home last week. PLEASE return your cards as soon as possible so they can be added to the display that has been created. Students are welcome to color the cards as they so choose. More cards are available for the asking. Please help us make this a special event for Veterans in our midst!

Your Next Opportunity to Support The D.C. Trip…

The next fundraiser for the Washington D.C. trip is just around the corner. It’s delicious Nelson’s BBQ Chicken! The chicken will be available in the North Fire Station on Highway 6 on Saturday, November 11. This is surely one of the last opportunities of the year to get some tasty chicken before the snow flies! Don’t miss out!

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Emma White, Cayden Hulbert, Maddison Harlan, Violet Hobart, Dallas Dean, and Brody Workman. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Butter Braids Sale

Our annual Butter Braid sale has now ended. If you still have an order form, please get that to Mrs. Thiem immediately. Delivery of the frozen loaves will be Wednesday, November 8. HELP WILL BE NEEDED WITH BUTTER BRAID DISTRIBUTION ON THE AFTERNOON OF WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8. LET MRS. THIEM KNOW IF YOU CAN HELP!!! THANKS!

Operation Christmas Child

Please consider putting together a shoebox full of toys and school supplies for a needy child in another part of the world! This is a great way for you to teach your child the joy of giving! Don't forget to include a letter and even a picture if you'd like. All boxes should be delivered to the school office no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 20th. Unfortunately, any boxes delivered after that time will NOT be delivered as we have a strict deadline to meet. The child receiving your gift will be blessed with toys, but more importantly shown the love of Jesus through you!

Once again, St. John will serve as a Relay Collection Center for National Collection Week – the week of November 13-20. If you would be willing to spend a few hours helping to collect boxes as they arrive and package them in shipping cartons, give Mrs. Thiem a call (347-2444).

Empty shoeboxes are now available for the asking in the office. Students in selected grades may use this program as their classroom Christmas project in lieu of a gift exchange between students. Stay tuned for instructions from your child’s teacher. Want an easy way to help? Money is needed for shipping! $9.00 per box – any amount will be accepted and will help send our boxes on their journey into the arms of a desperate child!

This is the month – it is finally here!

Operation Christmas Child Collection Week is near!

November 13 to 20, I’ll be manning the post

The rush time is here – it’s no time to coast!

Again, we need money for the shipping fee

Everyone knows those costs are not free.

Nine dollars for each box is asked and that’s not a lot

Considering distance, it’s really a small dot!

So send in your money, your check or your dollar

If you need me to come with a truck – just give a holler!

It’s been fun each month, well…it has been for me.

To find what, for shoeboxes, in the box that you leave.

I’m sorry if my poems make you cringe – just remember….

I’m taking time off – no poem in December!!!
