St. John Lutheran School

May 1, 2017 Number 34

The Principal’s Pen

While cleaning out some things at home I came across some papers I had written in 1999. I’m not sure what they were for, probably a class I was taking or a group I was involved with. When I wrote the papers, I had been married for a couple of years and Mindy and I were expecting our first child in about 9 months.

One of the papers was on Once-in-a-Lifetime Decisions. The idea is this: what decisions, choices are so important to you that you can make them once and never make them again? What time, deliberation, frustration can be eliminated from your life by not having to make certain decisions over and over again? What arguments with spouse, friends, or kids could be ended if certain decisions didn’t need to be made each week or month?

Some of the decisions on my list were:

Worship: “Worship is one of the chief ways of strengthening my faith. Therefore, I will worship every weekend.”

Stewardship: “All I have belongs to God. I am a caretaker, entrusted to do the best I can with what God has given me. My wife and I have decided to tithe on our salaries to the church.”

Service: “My lifetime decision is that service is an important part of my Christian life.”

Have I held to these decisions perfectly? No, certainly not. But, they continue to be important to me, and I would say that they continue to be guiding, foundational principals for my life.

What about you? What Once-in-a-Lifetime Decisions could you make?

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

Big Daddy Weave Coming to Kendallville!

Don’t miss out on your opportunity to see a popular Christian band right here at Cole Auditorium on Friday evening, July 28th! Cathy Thiem is working with a group from Grace Christian Church and a few of our members have graciously helped sponsor the event. THANK YOU!!

Big Daddy Weave’s song “Redeemed” recently spent 11 weeks at number 1 and was dubbed “Song of the Year” at the K-LOVE fan awards. Their “Love Come to Life” album yielded the rare feat of four back-to-back #1 singles. Lead singer Mike Weaver says of their newest album “Beautiful Offerings” that “every day is an opportunity to bless the heart of God through how we live, how we encounter our families, people we see in the grocery store, and everybody we meet. This isn’t us buckling down and trying to earn God’s love by pleasing Him. It’s a realization that because we are children of God, we can bless the heart of God by being subject to and directed by Him in every moment of our lives. Our lives then become something that is pleasing to Him. We become a beautiful offering.”

Tickets will go on sale on May 1st and can be purchased at BDWkendallville.eventbrite.com. Sales are expected to be brisk, so don’t delay!!

‘Tis May, the month of blooming things

Of budding trees, the bird that sings.

Our lawns will brighten with colorful cheer

To tell us all that summer’s near.

But some must live in a world that’s dark

Their colors are drab; no flowers, no park.

They yearn for something to brighten their day

So in their isolated darkness their world does not stay.

This month I am asking for anything bright

A pretty washcloth, a ball, or flashlight.

Send it in with a hope and a prayer

That some child will love it ----- somewhere.

The world that they live in is foreign to us

Anything we send them, they will make a fuss!

The smiles on their faces as they open with joy,

Their shoeboxes filled with our love and a toy.

Anything else that you think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well.

In the lobby you’ll find it upon the floor

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!!
