Principal’s Pen

Our chapel offerings for the 2nd Trimester are going toward Water for Good. This organization provides clean water in the Central African Republic (CAR). This is one of the poorest nations in Africa. Water for Good not only provides new wells, they also maintain these wells. Over time, they are able to develop relationships with the villagers and help them make lasting, positive changes in their lives.

Did you know?

● A child dies every 20 seconds from drinking unclean water.

● Worldwide over 1.8 million people die each year from diarrheal diseases.

● In Central Africa, each person only has access to 2.5 gallons of clean water a day – less than we use in flushing the toilet each day!

So far we have raised over $320 for this cause! That means that we have helped roughly 3,000 people gain access to clean water. By reducing the amount of time needed to get clean water, these people can spend their time on more productive pursuits. While raising over $300 is great, I know we can do so much more! I encourage you to send in an offering on Tuesday to help support this important cause. I’ve even heard that there might be a principal’s challenge in the works! Stay tuned for more details. In the meantime, I encourage your support of our chapel offering project in providing life-giving water, something we take for granted every day!

National Lutheran Schools Week

St. John, along with other Lutheran Schools around the country, will be celebrated the week of Jan. 24-30. Special events are being planned for that week to help our students recognize the blessings we have at St. John. Watch for all the details to come home soon!

Re-enrollment News

Re-enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year will be soon be here! A packet of information on the re-enrollment timeline, the registration process, and tuition levels will be sent home with students on Monday, Jan. 18. At that time we will also begin taking names of prospective new students to add to our class lists after our current students are re-enrolled. If you know of someone who would be interested in and benefit from the excellent Lutheran education that we offer, please encourage them to contact the school office.

St. John Open House

St. John will be hosting an Open House for the 2016-2017 school year on Sunday, Jan. 24, from 12:00 – 3:00 P.M. This is a great opportunity to invite your friends, neighbors, relatives, and co-workers to visit St. John and learn more about our school. You will receive a postcard that you can give to a friend as an invitation and our new school brochure today. Please share them!

Spring Auction

Please mark the date now on your new 2016 calendar for Friday, May 6, for our annual Spring Auction. This great event, at beautiful Sylvan Cellars, is a highlight of the year!

An event of this scope doesn’t happen by itself. We need you to be a part of the planning. When many of you join in the work becomes more manageable and more fun! Please join auction chair Jo Knox and others this Friday, Jan. 15, at 3:15 in the old school library for the kick-off meeting. If you can’t make it, but are still ready to help, please let Jo or the office know. Thank you for stepping forward to help make this year’s auction a great night of blessings for our school!

SCRIP: New Year, New Habit

Would you like free money? Do you shop at any of the following stores?

Walmart Arby’s Dairy Queen Shell

BP Dietrich’s Walgreens CVS

Applebees Home Depot Summer’s Stories Peachey’s

These are just a few of the retailers for which we stock scrip. When you purchase a SCRIP card a percentage of the face value is credited back to you. It really is that simple!

As we begin a new year, why not start forming a new habit of using SCRIP? All you have to do is stop in the office any time, purchase your SCRIP cards, and start saving money. The more you use SCRIP, the more you’ll save.

For those of you who have been using SCRIP, your balances for the last half of 2015 will soon be applied to the account of your choice.

Christmas Thanks….

Here is a note of thanks that was received from our Christmas Giving Tree:

My family and I would like to thank the families and staff for all their generosity this Christmas. While Santa may not be real, (or maybe he is?) he does live in the hearts of each of you. May 2016 bring great blessings to you and yours. God bless.

Progress Reports

We are nearing the halfway point of the 2nd Trimester. We will be sending home Progress Reports with the students on Monday, Jan. 18.

Cross Connections

Our partnership with Cross Connections provides our classes, students, and families with valuable, Christian counseling. Unfortunately, this year we have experienced several changes in this relationship. Mr. Gary Younghans, the counselor who replaced Mrs. Lisa Lessing, has recently been named Clinical Director of Counseling with Cross Connections. This change in position means that he will no longer be able to serve as our school counselor. Mrs. Elizabeth Sherman will be our new counselor. She was here one Tuesday in December with Mr. Younghans so our students have already been able to meet her. Mrs. Sherman has been with Cross Connections since 2008. We welcome Mrs. Sherman to St. John and look forward to developing a close relationship with her in the weeks and months to come.

Arrival/Dismissal Update

Thank you to all for working with us on making the changes to our arrival and dismissal. Although we are still in the transition stage, we feel as though things have been going well. Here are a few updates and reminders:

• If you are dropping off a child in the morning, you may stop next to the building at any point, either before door 5 or after. Please pull as far forward as you can when you are stopping.

• Parents are still welcome to walk children to their classrooms, if they are arriving between 7:50-8:00. Before 7:50 we are working to keep all students in the gym as the teachers are not in their rooms to supervise children. Parents arriving shortly before 7:50 are welcome to wait in the gym until 7:50.

• Parents can wait anywhere on the half of the gym near the kitchen. When you see your child you can go and pick him up from the teacher.

• For added safety for our walkers we are trying to dismiss them as a group. For those that travel eastward, they will all walk together and cross Riley Street with the crossing guard and then continue on to their destination.

• Our doorbell and buzzer will soon be installed (it wasn’t possible to get it done during Christmas Break) and we will be able to implement that part of our new procedure.

• As soon as the lunchroom is completed we will make that the new home of our Extended Care.

Again, thank you for working with us on these changes to help improve the safety within our building.

Inclement Weather

As the likelihood of inclement weather increases, a few reminders about the procedure for school closings are in order. St. John will follow the East Noble School Corporation. When their decision is made you will be notified through a SchoolMessenger call and the following media outlets: WPTA, WISE, WANE, WBCL, WAWK, and WLAB (STAR). You will see or hear St. John Lutheran, Kendallville, listed on all these media outlets. The option exists for school to be closed, on 2-hour delay, or on 3-hour delay, which pushes dismissal time back to 3:45. Parents must always use discretion, whether we are in session or on delay, to determine if their own drive to school is too hazardous and they need to wait before coming in to school.

Join us for the Drum Song Collection this Winter!

You'll learn twenty-five beloved Music Together songs and activities you can recreate at home. Your children will be delighted to hop or bounce along to "John the Rabbit," play a musical version of hide-and-seek to "Sneak and Peek," and act the part of a slow snail and quick mouse in "Snail and Mouse." In addition to imaginative and engaging weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, online access to the curriculum and support materials through the new Music Together app, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas.

She has eagles, our “Building His Kingdom Here” theme, sports, and our new St. John logo! She had a table set up at Little Saints Night for those who were present. An order form is coming home for others who are interested. Mrs. Strawser is donating half of what she makes back to St. John. Thank you!
