Number 23

Principal’s Pen

Instead of a more regular column this week, I would like to take some extended space to discuss all of the days we have missed due to the weather in recent weeks. So far, we have missed 13 days of school. We have received a waiver from the state for 2 of those days. It is likely that we can apply for a waiver for 2 additional days. That means that we have 9 more days to make up. It is also likely that we will have additional snow days as we still have half of February and all of March to go. That would mean that June 9 would be our last day, without any more missed days to consider.

In addition to adding days to the end of our calendar, the state has allowed 2 additional measures to deal with the lost days. The first is to schedule Saturday school. The second is to add 1 hour to the end of the school day (with 6 hours equaling 1 day). We are also considering scheduling make up days during Spring Break and/or for Good Friday (April 18). While these options may not be the most desirable for your family, they are necessary to provide for the missed education for our students and meet the requirements of our state.

As we consider our options and make decisions, there are 2 factors we must take into consideration. First, we are required to provide 180 days of education for our students (minus any waivers granted). There is no doubt that missing 13 days of school has impacted the learning in the classrooms and we must find ways to provide for that learning to still take place. The other factor is the timing of the make-up days in relation to the ISTEP tests. While we don’t place the highest level of importance on these tests, they are important and we want our students to do their best. As such, it is important for us to consider how we can make up some of the missed instructional time before the March testing window begins.

I will be discussing our options with the teachers and School Board. As always, input from our parents is also appreciated.

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

SJ Students Dance

This year, thanks to the Dekko Foundation Art Grant, our students will experience 2 different art forms. The first of these hands-on experiences will happen on Monday, Feb. 24. On that day, our K-8 students will get to “Dance through the Curriculum” with artists from Young Audiences Indiana. The K-5 students will be learning about the water cycle through dance and the 6-8 students will focus on fractions. Parents, watch for opportunities to ask your children about this great day!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Please mark February 27 & 28, on your calendar for Parent-Teacher Conferences. We’d like every family to participate as we seek to make the rest of the school year as beneficial to students as possible. As we did in the fall, school will dismiss at 1:45 (bus riders can wait until 2:45 to catch their buses) and conferences will be held from 2:15-7:00. Sign-ups for this important event were sent home with students in PS-8 last week. Please respond by the new deadline – Wednesday, February 12 – or a conference will be scheduled at our discretion.

St. John Showcase 2014!!

We’re gearing up for St. John Showcase 2014!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 7th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities!

St. John Showcase 2014 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. All entries must be screened by Mrs. Myer or a classroom teacher to be sure they are appropriate and polished. Please contact Mrs. Meyer with any questions. The deadline to return entry forms is Friday, February 21st.

Where will you be 3 months from tonight: Saturday, May 3? At the St. John Spring Auction. Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Please also be thinking of whom you would like to ask to join you. This fun evening includes an excellent dinner, awesome silent auction items, and a lively live auction.

The auction is a major fundraiser for our school. It requires a great deal of work to make it a success. This year’s auction committee is co-chaired by Jenna Anderson and Sarah Moreland. Working with them is Angie Malone, a veteran of several auctions. More help is needed. If you would like to join these ladies for the work, and the fun, please contact the school office.

2013 Tax Deduction Information

Parents, as you fill out your 2013 Tax Return, you should be aware that you may be eligible for a $1,000 tax deduction per dependent child that is enrolled in a nonpublic school such as St. John. Your tuition payments would qualify you for this deduction. In order to claim this deduction, you need to know that St. John’s school code is C985. The deduction code is 626. If you have questions, please check with your tax preparer or your tax preparation software.

Youth group is open to all 6th-12th grade, join us. Get to know us, involve yourself in service, and come to follow Christ more closely. We meet Saturday nights, 7-9pm, at Zach Hayden’s house (518 S. Main St, Kendallville). On Sunday mornings, we have a video group/Bible study in Mrs. Goldey’s room off the gym, 9:15-10:15.

We base the youth ministry off the Endeavor Movement, which is grounded in two basic principles. One, that youth can make the same commitment to Christ as adults. Two, that adults should not do for youth anything they can learn to do for themselves.

Special Prayers For The Moreland Family

Please include the Moreland family in your prayers as they experienced a fire in their basement on Friday morning. We thank God that they were all able to get out of their house without injury, but know that challenges are ahead of them as they won’t be in their house for several months. As the St. John family, we have the opportunities to reach out to the Morelands with prayers and actions. Please ask in the office for specific ways you can help.

The St. John promotional video that we filmed last fall is ready to go! If you’re a Facebook friend you’ve seen the video there. It’s also on our website. Now, we want your help in spreading the good news about St. John. Please go to the following link to see the video. Start Saving Now

A college or trade school education is an important step for the future of your children. Although that might be years away for you, it’s not too early to start planning and saving. Watch for information to come home with students this week of go to www.LearnMoreIndiana.org.

Our students are now 2 weeks into the Mad Ants Get Fit Challenge. Students are encouraged to complete 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Those that complete this challenge for 30 days will earn a ticket to the Mad Ants game on March 1. Student should return their log sheets each Thursday. Keep up the good work!

TinCaps Reading Program

In addition to getting physically fit with the Mad Ants, our students can also get brain fit with the TinCaps Reading Program. This popular program is back again this year. By reaching their goals our students can make their way around the bases and hit a home run, earning a free ticket to the TinCaps game on April 6. Your child should have received information last week and the program runs the month of February

Kids Against Hunger

Have you ever gone to bed hungry? No, I mean really hungry? Around the world, 1 in 7 people go to bed starving each night. One in six children worldwide die before they turn 5 from malnutrition and other related conditions. Our chapel offering for the 2nd Trimester will support Kids Against Hunger (www.kah-fortwayne.org) in bringing highly nutritious meals to needy children all over the world. Plus, our children will take part in an event in April to actually pack these meals. Your child has already received materials to help them collect money at home for their chapel offering.

If you notice our faculty and staff wearing their comfy jeans and sweatshirts on Fridays, it is for a good cause. They will be paying to wear their comfy clothes to support our chapel offering Kids Against Hunger. Stay tuned for special announcements where the kids can pay to wear their favorite things to help this worthwhile cause.

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SERVANT student last week: Alan Jimenez, Naomi Schroeder, Ashlynn Myers, Jack Blundell, Isaiah Alwine, Nathan Walz, Sahil Patel, Rhett Norris, Noah Jank, Conner LeRoy, RJ Anderson, Marcy Treesh, Hunter Kline, Baily Lash, and Katelyn Walters. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.
