Principal’s Pen

Happy New Year! The turn of the calendar from December to January always brings renewed hope and anticipation for what lies ahead. I suspect that those feelings might be even more pronounced this year as we look back on the many challenges from 2020. Not to be pessimistic, but these challenges won’t automatically be resolved with just the turn of a calendar page. But, nonetheless, we do have hope for better days ahead!

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

2 Corinthians 5:17

Our Bible verse for the month of January (we encourage families to memorize this verse together) has something to say about old and new. We see the idea of the old passing away. Yes, this could include the old year passing away as January begins. But, more importantly, this verse relates to our old, sinful self passing away. We still sin, but we are not bound by the guilt and eternal punishment of our sin. We are not defined by our sin! In addition, the new has come. Again, this is much more than a new year. It is a new you! Through Christ, you have been made new, redeemed as His child. Forgiveness, restoration, and eternal life are all yours through the power of Jesus’s death and resurrection. This is who you are!

A new year is always exciting! We like a fresh start. We anticipate good things ahead! We are often renewed and strengthened. I pray that this may be true for you to an even greater extent as we focus on the new life we have in Jesus! Happy New Year, indeed!

Free Lunches Continue

St. John has been approved to continue providing free breakfasts and lunches to all students for the remainder of this school year. Extra milks for breakfast or lunch and Extended Care snacks are not eligible for this program and will be billed to the families.

School Spelling Bee

Our 5th – 8th grade classrooms will be completing their classroom Spelling Bees this week. The School Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 12, at 11:30. We will be livestreaming this event for parents and others to view.

Science Fair

Inquiry, investigation, problem solving, research, time management, public speaking: all of these skills and more can be built through working on a Science Fair project! This is a great opportunity for children to explore an area that they are interested in. Information on the St. John Science Fair has been made available to students in grades K-8. Your questions can be answered by your teacher or by our Science Fair chairperson, Don Schroeder. The projects will be due on Monday, February 1 and the Science Fair Night will be held on Friday, Feb. 5, at 6:00. Details regarding the Science Fair Night being live or virtual will be made closer to the date based on current COVID conditions. We encourage all students to participate in this worthwhile event!

Re-enrollment for 2021-2022

It will soon be time to re-enroll for the 2021-2022 school year. Information for re-enrollment will come home on Monday, Jan. 18. We encourage all of our families to begin the re-enrollment process promptly as applications for new students will begin to be accepted on Monday, Feb. 1.

St. John Open House

Normally, we kick off our new enrollment season with an Open House near the end of January. With COVID restrictions and precautions in place we will not be doing that. However, we are preparing some virtual options for prospective parents.

Although we will not be holding traditional Open Houses right now, we still need your help in promoting St. John to your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and relatives. Word of mouth is consistently our best advertising. Please help spread the news about St. John and encourage others to contact the school office for more information.

National Lutheran Schools Week

St. John, along with other Lutheran Schools around the country, will be celebrated the week of Jan. 24-30. Special events are being planned for that week to help our students recognize the blessings we have at St. John. Watch for all the details to come home soon!

These students and their families, prayed for this week:

Mason Wysong, Ireland Blake, Bernardo Gonzalez, Abigail Hale, and Maddison Harlan

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student the week before Christmas Break: Paige Gibson, Hunter Parshall, Caydren Sams, Teegyn Schmidt, Chase Ryan, and Krista Hamann

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine

before others.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Progress Reports Coming

To allow a little more time between our return from Christmas Break and Parent/Teacher Conferences, we are adjusting our schedule for conferences from our previously published calendar. Here are the specifics:

● Conferences will once again be virtual over Zoom. Sign-up information will come home via email later this week.

● Conferences will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, from 2:15-7:00, and on Thursday Jan. 21, from 3:15-6:00, on 15-minute intervals.

● Additional child care will be available on Wednesday, Jan. 20 for students who cannot be picked up right at 1:55. Students will be separated by cohorts until normal levels of students are reached.

● Progress reports will be sent home with all students on Monday, Jan. 18.

We encourage all parents to participate in these conferences as they are valuable opportunities to discuss your child’s growth with his/her teachers!

Chapel Offerings

Chapel worship is every Tuesday and our students have the opportunity to bring in an offering in Thankfulness to God for His many blessings. This trimester our offerings go to support Ascension Lutheran School in Gary, IN. Ascension is a new school, started in 2017, that is providing a vital ministry in the heart of Gary.
