Some of you may recall seeing the old Heinz Ketchup commercial featuring the song ‘Anticipation’ by Carly Simon. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uoLoyg3JKRQ) Heinz used the tag line ‘The taste that’s worth the wait’ to advertise how rich and thick their ketchup was.

We’ve had to do a lot of waiting in recent months. Some of us have waited for a 10-day isolation or a 14-day quarantine to end. We’ve had to wait until we could go to a movie again or eat at our favorite restaurant. We’ve had to wait to be able to travel or gather with friends. Now, as Christmas approaches, the kids are growing in excitement for the start of their next break from school and the presents they are hoping to receive. We hope that all of this waiting will be worth the wait!

Advent, this time of the church year before Christmas, is a time of waiting. As we wait for the coming celebration of Jesus’ birth, we prepare by attending special church services (like our school Advent services on Wednesday nights!), listening to Christmas music, and having family Advent devotions. These things all help focus our minds on the true meaning of Christmas. But, Advent is also a time to focus on waiting for Jesus’ return. We know he is coming back at the end of the world and will take all those who believe in Him to heaven with Him. We don’t know when this will be, but we look forward to it with great anticipation.

I don’t know if Heinz is your preferred brand of ketchup or not. But, I am certain that waiting to celebrate Jesus’ first coming, as a baby at Christmas, and waiting for His return, are definitely worth the wait!

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student: Terryn Bowman, Kinlee Frey, Krista Hamann, Trey Warren, Cayden Sams, Evan Huelsenbeck, Chase Ryan, Teegyn Schmidt, Joshua Neuman, and Bryston Williams. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine

before others.

It's Science Fair Time!

It’s time for our little scientists to begin planning their Science Fair projects. Information will be made available to students this week and will be available in the office. This is a great activity for your child to pursue. Yes, it takes some extra time and effort on their part (and on your part)! But, what is gained far outweighs this time and effort. There is scientific learning, time management, critical thinking, public speaking, trouble shooting, problem solving, and logical thinking skills that are gained. We encourage all students to participate!

The King is Coming!

Advent is a time of preparation; a time to prepare for the coming of Jesus, our Savior. Our teachers and students have been preparing to lead 3 Advent worship services. This year, our services will be completely virtual. We encourage families to set aside time each Wednesday night to participate from the comfort of your home and worship and prepare together. We also encourage families to share the link with other relatives and family members, near and far, so that they may also join with us. Here is the remaining schedule:

Wednesday, Dec. 9, 7:00, led by grades 2-4

Wednesday, Dec. 16, 7:00, led by grades Preschool-1

All services will be streamed from www.sjlc.net and the St. John Lutheran Church and School Facebook pages.

Christmas at Bixler Lake

Don’t miss the opportunity to see our students’ work displayed on large wooden boards at Bixler Lake. Most classes in our school painted Christmas greetings to be displayed along with boards from other local school children. Once again, the teachers and students have done a fantastic job of focusing on Christ in Christmas! The displays will be lit each evening from 6-9 p.m.

Crazy Christmas Clothes!

Everyone is invited to wear some crazy-fun Christmas clothes, headpieces, necklaces, hats, etc. on the last day of school before Christmas Break – Friday, December 18. See how creative you can be!

A place to begin the journey from mourning to joy!

Through the medium of video:

• Find hope as we hear from people who have journeyed through grief – what helped in the journey.

• Receive helpful ideas from grief counselors, Christian authors, and pastors; many of whom share their own experiences of journeying through grief.

• Be encouraged to travel through your unique journey from mourning to joy – moving at your own pace.

Through small group conversation:

• Experience support and care with others through:

o listening to one another;

o discussing the video presentations; and

o mutual acceptance without ‘pressure’ to heal.

Through a workbook completed at home:

• Real stories of people journeying through grief and what they found helpful.

• Appropriate Scripture passages that apply to the topic.

Grief work is hard work. Join us for 2 or 3 sessions.

See if GriefShare proves helpful to you.

In-person or online!

Begins Sunday, January 10th at 3:30 p.m.

St. John Library or Online – sessions 90-105 minutes.

Come – Begin at any time!
