St. John Lutheran School

The Principal’s Pen

What does the Veery bird and your skin have in common? Let me tell you!

The Veery is a small, brown bird that lives in Delaware for most of the year. In the late summer the bird migrates to Brazil where it spends the winter. In late winter the Veeries head back north to Delaware. That’s a 6,000-11,000 mile round trip! If that’s not amazing enough, scientists have also learned that these birds adjust their departure based on the hurricane season. That’s right, they know before the hurricane season actually starts that it will be bad and they leave earlier. Amazing! (To learn more about these amazing birds, check out episode 1 of the Netflix show Connected.)

Now, on to your skin. Did you know that we shed 2 billion skin cells every day! That’s a lot of skin cells (and a lot of dust created!). Plus, if we lose that many skin cells each day our bodies must also be regenerating that many new cells. If we lose that many skin cells each day, think about how many skin cells we must have total! Amazing! (To learn more about skin cells, see Mrs. Thiem, she’s an expert. )

But, you say, what do the Veery birds and your skin have in common? Some would say that both of these things are random acts of chance developed over millions of years. To me, it seems clear that something of this magnitude can only happen by the hand of an incredibly intelligent and creative God. How else could the Veery know to begin its migration early, before the hurricane season even begins? How else cold our body lose and regenerate skin on such a magnitude. The Veeries and our skin both shout the awesome creative powers of our God!

The heavens declare the glory of God. Psalm 19:1

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works, my soul knows it very well. Psalm 139:14

Welcome, Arianna!

Last week we welcomed Arianna Wright to our second grade classroom. We hope Arianna and her family soon feel a welcome part of the St. John family!!

Paper Banners Coming To an End

Starting TODAY, we will no longer send paper copies of the Banner home with every family. The Banner can be accessed on our website: www.stjohneagles.org, or through ParentsWeb. If you would still like to receive a paper copy of the Banner please let the office know and we will gladly send a copy home with your child.

Whip & Chill

Last Spring, retiring teachers Mr. Scheiber and Mrs. Pillers were going to treat the whole school to a treat from Whip & Chill. Of course, that didn’t happen, but it is now! The Whip & Chill truck will be here on Tuesday afternoon and all students and staff will get to enjoy a cool treat! Thank you, Mr. Scheiber and Mrs. Pillers!

School Pictures

School pictures have been scheduled for Thursday, October 15. Parents of 4-year old preschool students that meet on M-W-F may bring their child to school on the 15th for Picture Day. Or, if you prefer, Picture Re-take Day has been scheduled for Wednesday, November 11, and preschool parents may choose to wait until that day. This year we will again be using Derby Photography for our class pictures and yearbook services. All students in our school will be pictured during their normal class time. Order forms will be sent home with students as soon as we receive them. We will need a parent or two as volunteers for this event. Please let Mrs. Thiem know that you are interested!! THANK YOU!!!

Parent-Teacher Conference Important Dates

Parent/Teacher Conferences were held last Wednesday and will finish up this week on Tuesday, Sept. 22. These conferences are an important way for parents and teachers to communicate and work together for the good of each student.

We will be hosting these conferences online. You can still sign up for a conference time at https://forms.gle/xiYogRS8d9HKtyic6 The teachers will send home the Zoom link for the meeting.

Progress Reports

Normally Progress Reports are given to parents at the Parent/Teacher Conferences. Since we are holding conferences online, we will send Progress Reports home with all students on Monday, Sep. 21.

Hot Lunch – IMPORTANT News

St. John has just been approved to provide free breakfasts and lunches to all students! Every child is eligible to receive a free breakfast and a free lunch each school day. Students will sign up in the morning as usual. Extra milks and Extended Care snacks are not a part of this program and will still be billed to the family. This program will begin Monday, Sep. 21, and will continue until Friday, Dec. 18. Additionally, this program is retroactive back to the start of the school year. Please watch for additional details on refunding any payments you have made for meals this year.

If you have questions please contact Mr. Walz, Mrs. Thiem, or our Food Service Director, Breanne Weber at bweber@stjohneagles.org

Learning at Home Plan

Last week we sent home both paper and email copies of our Learning at Home Plans. These plans highlight student, parent, and expectations for Learning at Home. There are several situations in which we will have students learning at home and we want to communicate now what that will look like. Please look for this information if you haven’t already seen it.

Yearbooks Available

Yearbooks from the 2019-20 school year are here and are available in the office for $15.00 each. First come-first served. Checks should be made payable to St. John PTL.

Fitness Fact

Body Composition is the final fitness component from The Cooper Institute. As we all know, two people that weigh an identical amount can be in very different states of health. One might be tall and lean and the other short and overweight, but even if their heights are the same, it is still not enough information to determine physical fitness. Body composition addresses this issue by looking at the percentages of fat, bone, muscle and water in our bodies. As we pursue fitness, a low body fat percentage becomes a much more important number than our weight or BMI (body mass index).

These students and their families will be prayed for this week: Lucas McKinley, Nola Prest, Jackson Croy, Caiden Treager, and Maddox Wysong

No Halloween Celebrations

Our school does not have Halloween parties. Too many things commonly associated with Halloween conflict with our Christian beliefs. We will instead have Fall or Thanksgiving parties in some of our classrooms.

Butter Braids Coming

Hey, everyone! Remember those delicious fruit-filled bread loaves we have sold the last several years? Well, we’ve got them coming again! Due to popular request we will again sponsor a sale of these yummy loaves. How about a loaf for a dance teacher, mailman, etc. for a Christmas gift? Bake it yourself, or give it to them frozen to prepare when they see fit.

The sale will begin October 12 with delivery of frozen loaves November 11. Keep this sale in mind when making your pre-holiday preparations and plan now to support our school!

SCRIP Time

SCRIP can save you money! Please stop in the office any time and purchase some SCRIP cards. The percentage that the school receives back from your purchases helps provide for the education of your children. Plus, St. John credits half of that percentage back to the account of your choosing back at St. John. The school wins and you win!
