From the Principal’s Pen

How long did you prepare for your wedding? How about for the birth of your child? How about for your last vacation? Special events require preparation. The bigger the event, the bigger the preparation!

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of our Lenten preparations for Easter. Like Advent, where we prepare for Christmas, Lent is also a special time for us as Christians. Lent is a time for us to focus on our sinfulness and our need for a Savior – Jesus – who took our punishment on the cross and rose in victory on Easter!

There are many ways we can observe Lent and prepare for Easter. Some can be long and involved and some can be short. Here are four:

Family Lenten Night: Please join us tonight at 6:30 for 2 different activities that you can take home and use as a family.

A is for Ashes: A short devotional book should come home with your child today. Each day features a short Bible verse and devotion that helps you and your family spend a few minutes each day focusing on Lent.

Ash Wednesday Chapel: We will have a special Ash Wednesday chapel on Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 10:45. Our worship will include “Burying the Alleluias” (the children colored papers with ‘Alleluia’, ‘He is Risen’, and a butterfly which will be hidden away until Easter Sunday) and the Imposition of Ashes (making a cross with ashes on our foreheads). Parents are welcome to join us for this special service!

Wednesday Night Church: Many churches, St. John is one of them, have special services on Wednesday nights (St. John’s is a t 7:00) to help worshippers give extra attention to this season.

Christmas and Easter are the 2 most important times for us as Christians. Spending some extra time preparing for these celebrations can be a meaningful and important time for your family. I hope you’ll join in on at least one of these opportunities!

Pastries With Parents!

Please join us THIS Friday morning, February 28 for a little treat and some quality time with your children before school! Arrive anytime between 7:00 and 7:45 for a donut, juice, milk, and coffee. It’s a small way we say thank you to our parents and students and celebrate the end of the 2nd Trimester. We look forward to seeing you then!

Family Lenten Night TONIGHT – 6:30 p.m.

Join us to take part in a family activity to carry out during Lent. Lent begins Wednesday, February 26th. A time to focus on the sacrifice Jesus carried out for all of us, so that we might be forgiven, receive new life in Jesus and live eternally in heaven.

Two Retirements

It is with both sadness and joy that I announce that both Mr. Scheiber and Mrs. Pillers have made the decision to retire at the end of this school year. We give thanks to God for the more than 50 years of service between these two faithful teachers. We are happy for them as they prepare to enter this new stage of life, but they will certainly be missed! We have already begun the process of looking for new teachers and will share updates as we make progress. We will also share additional information in the coming weeks about opportunities to recognize these two teachers for their ministry here. Please keep both Mrs. Pillers and Mr. Scheiber, as well as our search for new teachers, in your prayers.

Please pray for:

These St. John students and their families, prayed for this week:

Brayden Schott, Savannah Sorg, Addison Hampshire, Cayden Hulbert, and Lex Moser

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Carys Shire, Kylie Parks, Anna Conrad, Olivia Hastings, and Karson Butler. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Meet Luther!

Luther is a goldendoodle purchased by the Don Schroeder family to be trained as a Therapy Dog for St. John. Luther’s training is somewhat expensive, which prompted daughter Naomi to come up with a fundraiser idea. This week – Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday – Naomi will be selling people treats to help earn the money to train Luther. You can find Naomi in the gym after school with her goodies!

Tuition Assistance

St. John Lutheran School is a ministry of St. John Lutheran Church. As such, every child’s tuition is supported through the church. St. John does not want any child to miss out on the Lutheran education we provide because of family finances. We have several avenues of tuition assistance available to families in need. Families are asked to complete an application for tuition grant and aid. The only application available for this year is online and can be accessed at www.factstuitionaid.com. Please contact the school office for questions.

Follett Book Fair

St. John will be hosting a Follett Book Fair from Sunday, March 15 through Friday, March 20. Huge thanks to Summer Moser for serving as chairperson once again! Plan now to visit the Book Fair and find some great new reading material for your kids, and maybe even for yourself!

TinCaps Reading Program

We’re now just about done with the TinCaps Reading Program. If you haven’t started reading and keeping track of your goal, it’s not too late! As long as you complete all 4 base goals by Saturday, February 29, you can still earn your free ticket for our game on Sunday, May 3. Let’s get reading!

Lenten Devotional Materials

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, the time of preparation leading up to Easter. To help our families grow closer to each other and to God, we are sending home devotional materials today. We hope that you’ll be able to use this book and that it will be a blessing to you!

St. John Showcase 2020!!

We are gearing up for St. John Showcase 2020!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 6th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities! The evening contains a dinner; displays of student-created artwork, projects, and displays (both from school and at home); and a talent show. It’s a night you won’t want to miss!

St. John Showcase 2020 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. Please contact Mrs. Wilkinson now if you are willing to help. Mrs. Wilkinson can be reached at (260) 854-4262 or twilkinson@stjohneagles.org if you have questions.

Doctor’s Orders!

One of our school parents who is also a doctor has asked us to share that the flu is rampant in Kendallville and if your child has a cough and/or fever, please keep them home. By doing so, you are not only attending to your child’s best interests, but you are also considering the wellbeing of every other person in our building. Thank you!

Re-enrollment for 2020-2021

Re-enrollment for 2020-2021 has begun! You should have received a letter from the principal, directions for re-enrolling (completed online through FACTS Family Portal), and a 2020-2021 calendar. We look forward to re-enrolling our current students for another great year and welcoming new students into our family! We encourage all of our families to begin the re-enrollment process promptly in order to save your spot for next year and help in our planning process.

Now Hiring – Food Services Director & Kitchen Workers

Deedra Parks, our Food Services Director, has informed us that she is not returning after her maternity leave. We are thankful for her work over the past year and a half and wish her well as she focuses on her family. St. John is now accepting applications for this position. For more information, or to fill out an application, please contact the office.

We are also seeking applicants to fill open positions in our kitchen preparing and serving meals. Applications are available in the office.

Save the Date!

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 24, and plan to attend the St. John Spring Gala! This event will be a highlight for our St. John family in providing support for our school through silent and live auction items and more. Plan now to attend and invite your friends! Please contact Haley Arnold at 260-343-8028 or the school office to be a part of the team!

Fitness Fact

Earlier in the year we touched on the difference between dynamic stretching and traditional static stretching. It used to be the standard to start off every workout or practice with a series of stretches including toe touches and butterflies, but about 10 years ago dynamic stretching and its many benefits changed the way we begin (or should begin) a workout. For the next few weeks, I will highlight some of these benefits of dynamic stretching pre-workout.

Tax Reform and St. John Tuition

One of the provisions in the Tax Reform Act passed a couple years ago is that families can use their 529 accounts to pay for K-12 education and not just college education. This could be great news for those of you who already have a 529 account started. It’s also another great reason to start one of these accounts if you haven’t.

Someone You Know Needs to Hear This

On Saturday, Feb. 29, from 8:00-12:30, Messiah Lutheran Church in Wolcottville, will host a presentation on depression. Dr. Bev Yahnke (some teachers heard her speak at the fall Teachers Conference and she is excellent!) will explore the features and causes of depression and equip participants to examine their own well-being and talk with others who are struggling. There is no cost and you can get additional information by contacting Pastor Reed at 260-854-3129.

Track Helpers Needed

Even though we are in the midst of winter weather, we are thinking spring and the start of track season! Track is our biggest sports team and requires several coaches due to all of the activities involved. Practices will begin early to mid-March and run through most of May. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Kline, Athletic Director, for more information. jkline@stjohneagles.org or 349-2395. No experience is needed (although it would be helpful) and training will be provided.
