St. John Lutheran School

January 27, 2020 - Number 22

Mrs. Burrow. Mrs. Roesner. Mrs. Lauer. Mrs. Anderson. Miss Smith. Mrs. Krueger. Mr. Bohm. Mr. Stec. I remember them all, my teachers at St. John’s Lutheran School in Lombard, Illinois. All have now retired; some right after my class, the last one just a few years ago. I remember learning to read with Dick and Jane, writing a class newspaper in 4th grade, dissecting a frog in 8th grade, playing sports, being in the band, getting sent to the principal’s office, and so much more. Without knowing it at the time, those years in a Lutheran school, and those Lutheran teachers, shaped my life. So much so that I’ve spent the last 30 years of my life in Lutheran schools.

Beyond the education and life experiences that I received at St. John’s, the greatest impact on my life was growing in my faith. These teachers taught me, from a young age, that God loves me and sent His Son to die for me. They modeled what it meant to live as a Christian. When I messed up, they showed me forgiveness, grace, and love. When they messed up they asked for forgiveness, and gave me the opportunity to show them forgiveness. I was given the opportunity to live out my faith servicing others.

This week we celebrate National Lutheran Schools Week. There are almost 2,000 Lutheran schools throughout the US and the world, serving almost 200,000 students. Each of these students receives daily what your children receive at St. John. I hope that you will join me in giving thanks to God for the blessings you receive at St. John.

I’m thankful that my parents chose to send me to a Lutheran school. I’m thankful that you have chosen to send your children to a Lutheran school. I was blessed in more ways than I can count and even, probably, realize. I now consider it a blessing to be able to share the same gifts with your children. Reading, math, science, and social studies are important, but the greatest gift is that your children can grow in their faith and how they live it during their years here at St. John.

Did you know that St. John is one of almost 2,100 Lutheran preschool, elementary, and high schools across the nation? Did you know that these schools contain around 250,000 students? Did you know that the Lutheran schools are the second largest parochial school system in the United States (only the Catholic system is larger)? We have much to be thankful for as a part of this school system!

We’re celebrating National Lutheran Schools Week this week and the blessings of our wonderful Lutheran School.

The week’s fun activities are:

MONDAY - School Spirit Day/ Blue & White Day (wear

St. John colors or t-shirts)

TUESDAY – Decades Day

WEDNESDAY – Disney Day

THURSDAY – Mismatch/Crazy Hair Day

FRIDAY – Pajama Day (wear your pajamas and bring slippers, blankets, stuffed animals – per teacher’s instructions)

In addition, we will also start each day (except Tuesday which is Chapel), with Power Up. On Friday afternoon we will enjoy the first-ever Eagle Games, a series of games and challenges that students will complete with their Chapel Buddies!

Re-enrollment for 2020-2021

Re-enrollment for 2020-2021 began last week. You should have received a letter from the principal, directions for re-enrolling (completed online through FACTS Family Portal), and a 2020-2021 calendar. We look forward to re-enrolling our current students for another great year and welcoming new students into our family! We encourage all of our families to begin the re-enrollment process promptly as applications for new students will begin to be accepted today, Monday, Jan. 27, following our first Open House.

Open House

Thank you to everyone who helped promote our Open House and invited people to come and check us out. We welcomed 3 families with 3 students to the Open House. We are ready to meet with families and give individual tours at any time, so please continue to share about St. John with your friends.

Now Hiring – Food Services Director

Deedra Parks, our Food Services Director, has informed us that she is not returning after her maternity leave. We are thankful for her work over the past year and a half and wish her well as she focuses on her family. St. John is now accepting applications for this position. For more information, or to fill out an application, please contact the office.

Family Fitness Night at St. John

Ready to have some family fun? We are! The kids are excited and plans are coming together for this year’s Family Fitness Night! It will feature an indoor Gaga pit, a Super Hero workout zone, a Mini Ninja Warrior training area, and a scooter game you don’t want to miss! Adults, don’t worry, you participate only in the activities in which you feel at ease. Hope to see you on Feb. 4th!

Candy-Grams Coming

Plan now to share your love and buy a Candy-Gram from the Student Council. Candy-Grams will be sold after school on February 5, 6, 7, 10, 11, and 12. Candy-Grams will cost $1 and will include a candy bar and a Valentine greeting. They’re great for a friend, a favorite teacher or staff member, a Chapel buddy, and more!! All the profits will go toward the 7/8 grade trip to Washington D.C. this spring.

Chapel Offerings

Chapel worship is every Tuesday and our students have the opportunity to bring in an offering in Thankfulness to God for His many blessings. This trimester our offerings go to the work of Lutheran World Relief.

Screenagers - Wednesday, Feb. 12, 6:45

St. John will be showing Screenagers: “An award-winning film that probes into the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games and academics. The film offers solutions on how we can help our kids navigate the digital world.” Anyone parenting a teen, tween, or even older elementary student needs to see this movie and be equipped with the information presented to have important conversations with their children about these topics. This event is open to the community, so please invite your friends. We will have a random drawing to give away 2 Home Circle Plus wifi management devices.

Save the Date!

Mark your calendars for Friday, April 24, and plan to attend the St. John Spring Gala! This event will be a highlight for our St. John family in providing support for our school through silent and live auction items and more. Plan now to attend and invite your friends! A planning meeting will be held tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 5:00, and all parents are welcome to join us. Please contact Haley Arnold at 260-343-8028 or the school office to be a part of the team!

St. John Showcase 2020!!

We are gearing up for St. John Showcase 2020!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 6th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities! The evening contains a dinner; displays of student-created artwork, projects, and displays (both from school and at home); and a talent show. It’s a night you won’t want to miss!

St. John Showcase 2020 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. Please contact Mrs. Wilkinson now if you are willing to help. An informational letter and entry form for the talent show will be coming home soon. Mrs. Wilkinson can be reached at (260) 854-4262 or twilkinson@stjohneagles.org if you have questions.

Reading Enrichment With the TinCaps!

Coming home today is the information on this year’s TinCap Reading Program. The program will run from Feb. 1 through Feb. 29. Students who complete their 4 goals will receive a ticket to a TinCaps game on May 3.

Science Fair

Inquiry, investigation, problem solving, research, time management,

public speaking: all of these skills and more can be built through working

on a Science Fair project! This is a great opportunity for children to explore

an area that they are interested in. Information on the St. John Science Fair is available in the office. Your questions can be answered by your teacher or by our Science Fair chairperson, Don Schroeder. The projects will be due February 3 and the full schedule is available in the packet. We encourage all students to participate in this worthwhile event!

Projects are due on Monday, Feb. 3, and the Science Fair Night will be Friday, Feb. 7, from 6:00-7:00.

If you need a display board you can get one from the office. The boards are available first come-first served. You can make your check out to “St. John PTL”. Each board is $5.50.

Track Helpers Needed

Even though we are in the midst of winter weather, we are thinking spring and the start of track season! Track is our biggest sports team and requires several coaches due to all of the activities involved. Practices will begin early to mid-March and run through most of May. If you are interested in helping, please contact Mrs. Kline, Athletic Director, for more information. jkline@stjohneagles.org or 349-2395. No experience is needed (although it would be helpful) and training will be provided.

Kids Heart Challenge Is Off to a Good Start!

With 4 days left until our event, 29.8% of our kids are registered—more than halfway to our goal of +50%, and we are almost halfway to our monetary goal of $4200. Thank you for all you have done so far and keep up the great work! If your child registers online by downloading the app or at heart.org/KidsHeartChallenge, sending messages and posting on social media to raise funds is only a click away. Also online, your child will find great information for taking care of his/her health and challenges to support health goals. Just an FYI, St. John Kendallville is one of many St. John’s in the country and can be found on the 2nd page of options, not the first. Feel free to come join us on Thursday as we jump, shoot and dance our way to a healthier heart, just contact your child’s teacher or myself to find out when they will be headed to the gym on Thursday. Let’s press forward to help the American Heart Association help others!

Grace-Based Parenting Class Offered

Tim and Mindy Walz will be leading a Bible-based parenting course during Sunday morning Bible study hour. The course is Grace-Based Parenting: Building Character by Dr. Tim and Darcy Kimmel. Each week will include video instruction from the Kimmels and discussion and application led by Tim and Mindy. The course meets on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 and school families are welcome to join us!

Guitar Lessons Offered

Our Advanced Guitar instructor, Pastor Mike DiSanto (associate pastor at First Christian Church) is offering guitar lessons to students at St. John. Lessons will be given here at St. John at a very reasonable price! Contact Pastor Mike at 440-773-8879 for more information or to schedule lessons.

Fitness Fact

Many people begin an exercise program to lose weight rather than for the many other benefits that come from exercise. While exercise will aid in weight loss, weight loss is 80% food consumption and only 20% exercise. So making weight loss your primary goal may lead to frustration. But even if you never lost a pound, (which you definitely will if your eating stays the same and your exercise increase) there are so many other benefits to staying fit, that it is worth the effort!

Tax Reform and St. John Tuition

One of the provisions in the tax Reform Act passed a year ago is that families can use their 529 accounts to pay for K-12 education and not just college education. This could be great news for those of you who already have a 529 account started. It’s also another great reason to start one of these accounts if you haven’t. We will share more details as they become available.

Lutheran Schools Share Christ… On their bumpers!!!

We have a good supply of bumper stickers advertising our school and would like to distribute them to interested parents. If you would like to show your support of our school in this way, please contact Mrs. Thiem for your free sticker!

Parent Needs Transportation Assistance

We have a parent who could use some help with after-school transportation 2 days a week. If you might be able to help, please contact Cassandra Lash at 318-1381.

These students and their families, prayed for this week:

Allison Butler, Lukas Christian, Melissa Heileman, TJ Knox, and Brayden Koehl
