Principal’s Pen

Happy New Year! Changing the calendar to January gives us a fresh start, a clean slate, a new beginning. Have you made your New Year’s Resolutions? The new year gives us new motivation to make changes in our lives, whether they be health, nutrition, work, recreation, financial, or other. There’s nothing wrong with using the new year as the motivation for making changes in our lives!

What about your family and home life? If you’re like me, you have plenty of regrets about what your family life is like and plenty of changes you would like to make. Fortunately, God’s grace and forgiveness extends to you and me and covers our sins, mistakes, and shortcomings as parents. And, His grace also gives us the motivation and power to make changes. So, what about making a New Year’s resolution about improving your family life?

If you take up this idea, why not bring your children into the conversation? Here are a few simple questions to begin the conversation:

What did you like about this past year?

What didn’t you like about this past year?

What is something we should try to do this year?

The conversation can continue and eventually goals and plans can be made for changes in the coming year. Bringing your children into the conversation will give you an insight into their world and their view of your family. It will also show them that they are a part of the story of your family

As you bring your children into the conversation, why not also bring God in? After all, whatever plans you make will fall short without God! Pray for His presence in your home. Ask for His guidance as you parent and as your kids grow. Spend time at church, in devotions, and in prayer. Go with God into this new year!

School Spelling Bee

Our 5th – 8th grade classrooms completed their classroom Spelling Bees before Christmas Break. The School Spelling Bee will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 7, at 1:15. Parents are welcome to attend!

Science Fair

Inquiry, investigation, problem solving, research, time management, public speaking: all of these skills and more can be built through working on a Science Fair project! This is a great opportunity for children to explore an area that they are interested in. Information on the St. John Science Fair has been made available to students in grades 1-8. Your questions can be answered by your teacher or by our Science Fair chairperson, Don Schroeder. The projects will be due on February 3 and the Science Fair Night will be held on Friday, Feb. 7, at 6:00. We encourage all students to participate in this worthwhile event!

Grace-Based Parenting Class Offered

Tim and Mindy Walz will be leading a Bible-based parenting course during Sunday morning Bible study hour. The course is Grace-Based Parenting: Building Character by Dr. Tim and Darcy Kimmel. Each week will include video instruction from the Kimmels and discussion and application led by Tim and Mindy. The course meets on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 and school families are welcome to join us!

Guitar Lessons Offered

Our Advanced Guitar instructor, Pastor Mike DiSanto (associate pastor at First Christian Church) is offering guitar lessons to students at St. John. Lessons will be given here at St. John at a very reasonable price! Contact Pastor Mike at 440-773-8879 for more information or to schedule lessons.

Re-enrollment for 2020-2021

It will soon be time to re-enroll for the 2020-2021 school year. Information for re-enrollment will come home on Monday, Jan. 20. We encourage all of our families to begin the re-enrollment process promptly as applications for new students will begin to be accepted on Monday, Jan. 27, following our first Open House.

St. John Open House

St. John will be hosting an Open House for the 2020-2021 school year on Sunday, Jan. 26, from 12:00 – 3:00 P.M. We are asking all families to invite a friend, neighbor, relative, or co-worker to visit St. John and learn more about our school. Invitation fliers are coming home with next week’s Banner.

Also, we are looking for some additional help in promoting our Open House. We have posters available. If you have a business or frequent a business that would be willing to put up a poster advertising our Open Houses, please ask in the office for one. Or, if you would be willing to deliver posters to a few area businesses for us, please let us know in the office.

It is true that word of mouth advertising is our best form of advertising and we appreciate your help in spreading the word about St. John!

Save the Date! #1

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 6:30, and plan to attend the St. John Jump, Laugh, Play Family Fitness Night. Hope to see you and your family there!

Save the Date! #2

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, Feb. 12, at 6:45, and plan to attend the St. John premiere of the documentary Screenagers: “An award-winning film that probes into the vulnerable corners of family life and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games and academics. The film offers solutions on how we can help our kids navigate the digital world.” (www.screenagersmovie.com)

Save the Date! #3

National Lutheran Schools Week

St. John, along with other Lutheran Schools around the country, will be celebrated the week of Jan. 26-Feb. 2. Special events are being planned for that week to help our students recognize the blessings we have at St. John. Watch for all the details to come home soon!

These students and their families, prayed for this week:

Lydia Reed, Danica Sattison, Bryson Shire, Bryston Williams, and Isaac Bennett

SCRIP: New Year, New Habit

Would you like free money? Do you shop at any of the following stores?

Walmart Arby’s Dairy Queen Pizza Forum

BP Wendy’s Walgreens CVS

Applebees Home Depot Kohl’s Peachey’s

These are just a few of the retailers for which we stock scrip. When you purchase a SCRIP card a percentage of the face value is credited back to you. It really is that simple!

As we begin a new year, why not start forming a new habit of using SCRIP? All you have to do is stop in the office any time, purchase your SCRIP cards, and start saving money. The more you use SCRIP, the more you’ll save.

For those of you who have been using SCRIP, your balances for the last half of 2019 will soon be applied to the account of your choice.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student the week before Christmas Break: Maddie Harlan, 7th Grade Class, 8th Grade Class, Timothy Reed, Axel Harper, Cierra Croy, and Barrett Klink

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine

before others.

Chapel Offerings

Chapel worship is every Tuesday and our students have the opportunity to bring in an offering in Thankfulness to God for His many blessings. This trimester our offerings go to mission work in Peru.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Progress Reports This Week (& Next!)

Progress Reports will be given to parents at Parent-Teacher Conferences next Wednesday, January 15 or the following Tuesday, January 21. School will dismiss at 1:55 those days to allow a little extra time for conferences. Bus riders will be able to stay after school and ride the bus as normal. Parents are receiving a notification of their scheduled time to meet with their child’s teacher(s) this week. Please be on time for your conference, and please respect the 15 minute time limit as other parents will be waiting to meet the teacher after you have completed your visit. If a longer conference is needed, please arrange another time with the teacher. As we did during the 1st Trimester conferences, we also invite parents to stop at one of the tables around the building after their conferences to fill our short surveys for the teacher and Principal Walz.. We appreciate this feedback and the opportunity to grow. Thanks!

Fitness Fact (and Kid Heart Challenge)

Exercise strengthens the heart muscle so your cardiovascular system functions more effectively. The heart pumps more easily, builds up less plaque and becomes more efficient. When the heart becomes stronger, it pumps more blood per beat, so at rest, the heart rate is lower. Our students and staff at St. John will again participate in the Kids Heart Challenge (formerly called Jump Rope for Heart). Information will be sent home with the students following our kick-off assembly on Thursday, Jan. 16. Our event will be held during Lutheran Schools Week on Jan. 30. Contact Mrs. Barr if you have any questions or would like to donate.

“You may have been noticing the fitness calendars coming home each month. Hopefully they encourage us all to be more active, especially during these cold winter months. If your child completes the challenge for 15 or more days out of the month, their name is entered into a raffle for a prize, (along with the many benefits that come with taking care of our bodies). Let’s all ‘Roll Into January’!
