“Hurry up and get ready! It’s almost time to go! Why haven’t you gotten your things together yet? If we don’t leave now, we’re going to be late!”

Does this sound familiar? Maybe these words, or words like them, were spoken at your house last weekend for Thanksgiving travel or Black Friday shopping. Getting ready can be exciting, but it can also be stressful. We are excited for what is coming. But, the process can led to stress. And, if your house is like mine (especially when my boys were younger), the more we pushed, the slower they moved!

Sunday, Dec. 1, was the first day of Advent, a time of preparation to get ready for Christmas. While many of our preparations involve getting ready for our celebration of Christmas (and there is nothing wrong with that!), Advent is really more about getting ready for Jesus to come to us. Yes, He came 2,000 years ago (and we celebrate His birth on Dec. 25!). Yes, He promised to come again (we look forward to that!). But, He also promised to be with us always, and that includes today. Advent is about preparing our hearts for Jesus today. That’s exciting! How do we do that? There are some simple ways. Reading your Bible is a great way to begin. Prayer also helps prepare our hearts for Jesus. So does worship, and during Advent there are even more services to attend (how about joining us for all 3 Advent services?). These are simple ways to take a step forward in preparing for Jesus.

The month ahead is stressful, there is no doubt about it. It is also exciting. I pray that as you go about your many preparations for your celebration of Jesus’s birth, you also take time to prepare your heart for Jesus coming to you.

A Time of Remembrance

On Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3:00, St. John will host “A Time of Remembrance”. This service is designed to honor family and friends who have died and gone to heaven. The service will include hymns and songs, scripture readings, prayer, and reflections of God’s grade given through loved ones who have died. We invite all school families to join us for this special time.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Will Schowe, Zaylei Gerber, Olivia Hastings, Karson Butler, Lydia Hulbert, Jonah Slater, Chase Ryan, Caydren Sams, Holden Buwalda, Evan Huelsenbeck, Emmalinn Bond, Genevieve Smoot, and Ashlynn Myers. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine

before others.

Fitness Fact

Did you catch last week’s final comment? It was/is so powerful that we are printing it again: “There simply isn’t a major health problem where exercise cannot have a positive effect,” (Bryant-webmd.com) (BTW: Every P.E. teacher in the world cheered at that statement!) )

It's Science Fair Time!

It’s time for our little scientists to begin planning their Science Fair projects. Information will be made available to students this week and will be available in the office. This is a great activity for your child to pursue. Yes, it takes some extra time and effort on their part (and on your part)! But, what is gained far outweighs this time and effort. There is scientific learning, time management, critical thinking, public speaking, trouble shooting, problem solving, and logical thinking skills that are gained. Parents, you are encouraged to have your child participate!

Guitar Lessons Offered

Our Advanced Guitar instructor, Pastor Mike DiSanto (associate pastor at First Christian Church) is offering guitar lessons to students at St. John. Lessons will be given here at St. John at a very reasonable price! Contact Pastor Mike at 440-773-8879 for more information or to schedule lessons.

The King is Coming!

As a part of the spiritual formation we provide children, our students are preparing to help lead worship during the Advent season! Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas. Grades K through 2 will lead the worship on Wednesday, Dec. 4. Grades 3 through 5 will lead the worship service on Wednesday, December 11. Preschool and Grades 6-8 will lead the worship service on Wednesday, December 18. All services start at 7:00 in the Worship Center. More details will be coming home in the weeks ahead. We hope that your family will plan now to join us for these special services.

VBS Holiday Bake Sale

Don’t forget about the Holiday bake sale to support our VBS program for next summer! Save yourself some time in the kitchen and support a great cause at the same time! Order forms are being sent home this week. Get your yummy goods ordered!

A Birthday Party for Jesus

Please join us on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 9:20 for a Birthday Party for Jesus. We’ll have family activities for all ages, cake and other birthday party stuff! All St. John church and school families are invited to attend!

Order a Christmas Poinsettia

If you would like to order a Christmas poinsettia to decorate our worship areas for our Christmas Eve and Christmas morning services, please see Mrs. Thiem or Miss Young for an order form. The cost for each poinsettia is $13.00 and the plants can be placed in honor or in memory of a special person in your life. Deadline to order is noon, Friday, December 13, so don’t delay!

Christmas at Bixler Lake

Don’t miss the opportunity to see our students’ work displayed on large wooden boards at Bixler Lake. Most classes in our school painted Christmas greetings to be displayed along with boards from other local school children. The displays will be lit each evening from 6-9 p.m. Other activities will be available during those times as well.

Christmas Gift Collection

While the holidays can be an especially joyous time for most of us, it can be a time of sadness for a child of a needy family. To help in this cause, we will be taking a gift collection to be given to needy children of our school and congregation. This is strictly a voluntary donation.

Ornaments have been placed on a Christmas tree in our school. Each ornament has written on it either the name of a specific toy or a suggested type of gift certificate for clothing which would be enjoyed by one of our families. (We have switched to gift certificates for clothing rather than the purchase of actual clothing.)

If the item to be purchased is a toy, purchase the toy, wrap the gift, then tape the ornament on the front of the package. If you choose to purchase a gift certificate, simply place the certificate inside the envelope you take from the tree and return it to the school office. We will see that it gets to the family for whom it was intended.

Amazon Smile

While you’re thinking about Christmas shopping and gift giving, let’s also talk about Amazon. Instead of using their regular site, please use www.smile.amazon.com. Designate St. John as your charitable organization and we will receive 0.5% of your purchases.
