The Principal’s Pen

What does $2 buy? Not much, you might think. But, you would be wrong! $2 can buy a book. But, much more than a book, $2 can buy happiness, joy, laughter, learning, hope, and comfort.

Last week, Krista Layman, founder of Kate’s Kart, and mother of Kate Layman, spoke at the end of our chapel service. We learned about Kate, who was born on June 26, 2006. During her short life she underwent multiple surgeries to try and repair her heart. She died on June 15, 2008. During her short life, Kate loved books. It was that love of books that led her parents to start Kate’s Kart in May of 2008. Their idea was simple, to provide one hospital with new books that could be given to patients. The first Kate’s Kart was placed at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne. In the 10 years following, Kate’s Kart has grown to 29 karts in 20 hospitals! Krista shared with us that this summer Kate’s Kart will give away its 250,000 book!

Kate’s Kart is a tremendous ministry that has blessed thousands of kids and families here in Northeast Indiana, including some of our own students! You can learn more about the ministry and read some testimonials from families blessed by Kate’s Kart on their website at www.kateskart.org.

Now, back to the $2. Because Kate’s Kart buys so many books, they can buy new books for $2 a book. Krista challenged each student and staff member to bring in $2 in order to supply a new book. I think that’s a great challenge! That means a little over $400 total, and we’re already halfway there! I think it would be great to raise the next $200 tomorrow and next Tuesday in our Chapel offerings! $2 can buy a lot!

Prayers for the Thiem Family

We share again the death of Dave Thiem, Cathy’s husband. During surgery last Friday, he went into cardiac arrest and could not be revived. We rejoice in Dave’s faith and that he is now enjoying life in Heaven. We grieve with Cathy, Laura, Chery, and the rest of the family in their loss. Visitation will be at Hite’s Funeral Home on Wednesday from 3:00 until 8:00. A viewing will be held on Thursday at St. John’s Worship Center at 3:00 with the funeral following at 4:00. We will share additional information as it becomes known. Please keep the Thiem family in your prayers.

Fitness Fact

There are 5 components of physical fitness, and they are listed below with their definition. Next week, in our final installment, we will look at how the Fitnessgram Test (which students in Grades 2-8 just completed) assesses each of these components.

Flexibility: Since it refers to being limber and bending easily, this component helps keep us from injury

Muscular strength: This component refers to how much force can be exerted on an object one time.

Muscular Endurance: Moving a lighter object again and again over a period of time.

Cardiorespiratory Endurance: The ability of the heart and lungs to easily supply oxygen during an extended workout.

Body Composition: The percentages of fat, muscle, bone and water in our bodies.

Please pray for School Board members Angie Malone, Tacy Potts, Dawn Hossinger, and Jeff Lehman; followed by our staff in general

Please pray for Cathy Thiem and family in the sudden loss of her husband in surgery last Friday.

Endowment Fund Challenge

Through the vision of Frank and Martha Johnson, and the generous support of many donors, the St. John Lutheran School Endowment continues to thrive. The balance in the endowment is over $750,000. This year the school will receive $35,478 from the endowment. Of that, $10,684 will be used to provide assistance for 7 children from 7 families. The rest will be used for general operating expenses.

Each year, The Lutheran Foundation encourages donations to our endowment fund by matching two dollars for every one dollar we receive. In order to reach the maximum match, we are in need of an additional $15,000 in donations to our endowment. The deadline to receive these donations is May 31 and donations can be sent to the school office or made online at www.stjohneagles.org (click on DONATE NOW). Will you help us conquer this challenge and reach our endowment goal?

Ga Ga Ball’s a GO!!!

Thanks to the team effort of our students raising the money to construct a Ga Ga Ball Pit on our parking lot, and St. John parent Tyler Moser who completed the construction, the game is ready for student play!! We hope there will be lots of good exercise, fun, and memories created in this new space! Thanks everyone!!!

St. John Students Stay in Shape This Summer

Get ready for St. John’s Summer Enrichment Program! Students can participate by tracking reading minutes, physical activity minutes, and skills workbook pages. It is now too late to order a Summerbook through the school and save shipping fees, but you are still able to order on your own. All the students who participate in this summer program will be able to participate in the special recognition party once school begins in the fall.

21st Century Scholar Program

Parents, especially of 7th and 8th graders, need to explore this state program that provides college funding for eligible Indiana students. Income eligibility requirements exist, but the application process and other requirements are fairly simple. Scholarships for both Indiana public and private colleges are available. Applications must be made during the student’s 7th or 8th grade year. You can find all the details at www.in.gov/ssaci/2345.htm

Vacation Bible School!

Join us at St. John this summer as we blast off for an out-of-this-world adventure! Children ages 3 through entering 6th grade will learn about God’s plan of salvation from creation to the cross.

We’ll enjoy Bible stories, game, snacks, arts and crafts, music, and more!

School Choice (Voucher) Students

Parents of students applying for a School Choice (voucher) Scholarship for the 2019-20 school year need to come in to the office to complete your application for next year. The process takes about 10 minutes with Mrs. Thiem. You will need a copy of your 2018 tax return, unless you receive other forms of public assistance. We will have verification of that if you do.

Tuition Assistance

St. John Lutheran School is a ministry of St. John Lutheran Church. As such, every child’s tuition is supported through the church. St. John does not want any child to miss out on the Lutheran education we provide because of family finances. We have several avenues of tuition assistance available to families in need. Families are asked to complete an application for tuition grant and aid. The only application available for this year is online and can be accessed at www.factstuitionaid.com. Please contact the school office for questions.

Track Practice and the Parking Lot

Our track team, open to students in 4th-8th grades, is in full swing! Practice days vary from week to week, but the team usually practices 3 days a week. The team can often be found practicing in the parking lot and alley. If you arrive after 3:15 to pick up your child from Extended Care or another activity, please drive with extra caution in the parking lot!

Camp Lutherhaven Time!

Camp Lutherhaven is a place where you can experience how awesome God is while having fun, enjoying His creation, and making new friends. We are making the final touches on an awesome summer experience at Lutherhaven. Are you signed up yet? It is not too late to register! Visit us online today at www.lutherhaven. Org, or call for more information at 260-636-7101.
