Hallelujah! He is Risen!

He is Risen indeed!

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16

Happy Easter! John 3:16, arguably the best-known verse in the Bible, is an Easter verse. Jesus was born because God loves us. Jesus lived a perfect life because God loves us. Jesus suffered because God loves us. Jesus died on the cross because God loves us. Jesus rose from the dead because God loves us. My sins, our sins, sent Jesus to the cross. God’s love kept Jesus on the cross. God’s love conquered sin, death, and the devil for me. God’s love raised Jesus from the dead. God’s love gives us the new life that Jesus had.

Easter is now past. But, we are Easter people! Every Sunday is a little Easter as we worship together and celebrate the forgiveness and new life we have through Jesus. Each day can also be a little Easter as we daily have God’s forgiveness and new life.

May you experience God’s love and the joy of Easter every day!

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

St. John Students Stay in Shape This Summer

Get ready for St. John’s Summer Enrichment Program! Students can participate by tracking reading minutes, physical activity minutes, and skills workbook pages. Students will be able to purchase summer workbooks from the Summerbook Company. All the details were sent home previously. STRICT deadline to order on our school order (and receive free shipping!) is April 26th. All the students who participate in this summer program will be able to participate in the special recognition party once school begins in the fall.

Preschool through Grade 1 Spring Program

Everyone is invited on Monday, May 6th to share some springtime joy with our younger students. The program begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Worship Center.

21st Century Scholar Program

Parents, especially of 7th and 8th graders, need to explore this state program that provides college funding for eligible Indiana students. Income eligibility requirements exist, but the application process and other requirements are fairly simple. Scholarships for both Indiana public and private colleges are available. Applications must be made during the student’s 7th or 8th grade year. You can find all the details at www.in.gov/ssaci/2345.htm

Remember that in addition to the Box Tops for Education, we also collect points from Aunt Millie’s and Tyson products. Please place them in the collection bin on the wall of the church lobby. Thanks!

School Choice (Voucher) Students

Parents of students applying for a School Choice (voucher) Scholarship for the 2019-20 school year need to come in to the office to complete your application for next year. The process takes about 10 minutes with Mrs. Thiem. You will need a copy of your 2018 tax return, unless you receive other forms of public assistance. We will have verification of that if you do.

Tuition Assistance

St. John Lutheran School is a ministry of St. John Lutheran Church. As such, every child’s tuition is supported through the church. St. John does not want any child to miss out on the Lutheran education we provide because of family finances. We have several avenues of tuition assistance available to families in need. Families are asked to complete an application for tuition grant and aid. The only application available for this year is online and can be accessed at www.factstuitionaid.com. Please contact the school office for questions.

Track Practice and the Parking Lot

Our track team, open to students in 4th-8th grades, has begun practicing! Practice days vary from week to week, but the team usually practices 3 days a week. The team can often be found practicing in the parking lot and alley. If you arrive after 3:15 to pick up your child from Extended Care or another activity, please drive with extra caution in the parking lot!

Camp Lutherhaven Time!

Which do you think is greater – swimming or boating? How about archery or crafts? What about getting up early for Polar Bear or staying up for late night s’mores? No matter what your preference is, you will be sure to experience a ton of fun at Camp Lutherhaven this summer! With youth programs for K-12, family programs, and Servant Events for grades 8-12, you can come and enjoy all that Lutherhaven offers. Visit us online today at www.lutherhaven.org, or call for more information at 260-636-7101.

Tax Reform and St. John Tuition

One of the provisions in the tax Reform Act passed a year ago is that families can use their 529 accounts to pay for K-12 education and not just college education. This could be great news for those of you who already have a 529 account started. It’s also another great reason to start one of these accounts if you haven’t. We will share more details as they become available.

Registration Timeline

Enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year for both our returning parents and for new parents is now open. You can re-enroll your child for the coming year by accessing the re-enrollment packet in ParentsWeb. If you need another copy of the directions, please ask in the office or email Mr. Walz. Here are other important dates to keep in mind:

April 20 First deadline to submit application to FACTS for tuition assistance

June 1 Parents can enroll 4-year-old preschool students in the other

session if they desire a full-day program

Chapel Offerings

We encourage all students to show their thankfulness to God by bringing in Chapel offering on Tuesdays! Our 3rd Trimester offering project will be Kate’s Kart, a service that provides new books to hospitalized kids throughout Northeast Indiana.

IREAD State Tests

Our 3rd Grade class completed the IREAD test the week before Spring Break. With a new test vendor, we have already received the results and all our 3rd grade students passed!

ILEARN State Tests

The ISTEP test has been replaced with the ILEARN test for all 3rd through 8th graders. The ILEARN test window (when we are required to give this assessment) is April 22 through May 17. We will begin testing on Tuesday, April 20, and will finish on Tuesday, May 14. Our plan is to test on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. Parents, please avoid scheduling appointments during these testing weeks so that we can limit the number of make-up tests we need to give. A full testing schedule will be emailed to 3rd-8th grade parents today. A new part of the ILEARN test is a listening segment. Therefore, all students will need some type of headphones for the testing. It does not matter if it is the earbud style or the over-the-ear style. Hopefully you have a set at home that can be used. These do not need to be anything fancy! We will have a limited supply at school for students who forget or whose own pair breaks. Additional details regarding testing will come home in the next two weeks.

Fitness Fact

This month we began our end of the year fitness testing. This test goes by a couple of different names Presidential Youth Fitness Program or Fitnessgram. It has some similarities to the Presidential Physical Fitness Test we all grew up with, but actually more differences. The test no longer pits students against other students, but instead has an established Healthy Fitness Zone for students to pursue. In addition the test is now very focused on actual areas related to fitness such as: flexibility, muscular strength and endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance and body composition. Since fitness is something we can all pursue and attain (with effort) it is much more appropriate than testing pure athletic ability as did the former test.

Kroger Community Rewards

Thanks to the help of over 100 of our church and school families, our school will receive $375.31 for profits from the Kroger Community Rewards program from the first quarter of 2019. If you have not yet registered your Kroger card, please see Mrs. Thiem as to how to go about that. All you then have to do is SHOP at Kroger and show your card!

E-Mail Update

If you have changed your e-mail address since the beginning of this school year, please be sure we have the corrected address. We keep an ongoing list of this vital way to contact parents! Thanks
