The Principal’s Pen

Are you a thermometer or a thermostat? This was the question posed to our middle school students in Christian Living classes before break and last week. A thermometer simply reflects, or tells us, the temperature. A thermostat sets, or controls, the temperature. A thermometer person is one who simply reflects the culture around him. A thermostat person is one who sets, or influences, the culture around him. The question again is, are you a thermometer or thermostat person?

A thermostat person’s life is based on values and principles that influence what others think, say, and do. Our middle school students spent some time thinking about and writing down some of their values. It’s an exercise that would be valuable for us. Here are some questions/statements to guide your thinking:

• What simple words describe what I deeply believe?

• What simple words describe what I live by or want to live by?

• What beliefs define who I am?

• What beliefs guide my big decisions?

• Values are stronger than thoughts or opinions. They are ideals of you at your best.

• Values are the inner-based principles that will fuel the direction of your life.

As you think about your life, I’m sure you can think of times when you were a thermometer and when you were a thermostat. I know I can! Our culture is also full of examples of both positive and negative thermometers and thermostats! As this new year dawns, it would be worthwhile to spend some time reflecting on the values that guide our lives and influence others. May God guide and bless you as you live as thermostat people!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Information on signing up for our 2nd Trimester Parent/Teacher Conferences came home last Thursday. As we tried with our 1st Trimester Conferences, these conferences will be split over two weeks and will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 16, and Tuesday, Jan. 22, starting at 2:15. School will dismiss at 1:55 these days. Progress Reports will be given out at these conferences. After the conferences there will be 4-5 more weeks to make necessary changes before the end of the trimester. As we also tried with our 1st Trimester conferences, parents will be invited to fill out a short survey after the conference to provide input for the teacher and principal. Please watch for the conference sign-up information and return it promptly so that we can schedule your conference. We look forward to these conferences and a meaningful time to discuss the growth of your child!

Something New for Boys in Grades 3-8

Last Wednesday, 17 boys participated in our introduction to this new discipleship groups for boys in grades 3-8! Grow Tall - Stand Tall: Mighty Oaks is a brand new after school club at St. John. It's led by Mr. Walz and Mr. Wendt (and we're working to involve some other dads as mentors). Grow Tall - Stand Tall: Mighty Oaks sessions will include active games, snacks, relationship building, Bible lessons on characteristics of Godly men, and more! Grow Tall - Stand Tall: Mighty Oaks will officially begin on Thursday, January 10, from 3:00-4:30.

Even if you didn’t make the introductory session, you are welcome to join in on Jan. 10! A schedule of our January and February meetings will be coming home today with all boys in grades 3-8. If you have questions, please contact us (Mr. Walz twalz@stjohneagles.org or Mr. Wendt pwendt@stjohneagles.org)!

Re-enrollment for 2019-2020

It will soon be time to re-enroll for the 2019-2020 school year. Information for re-enrollment will come home on Monday, Jan. 21. We encourage all of our families to begin the re-enrollment process promptly as applications for new students will begin to be accepted on Monday, Jan. 28, following our first Open House.

St. John Open House

St. John will be hosting an Open House for the 2019-2020 school year on Sunday, Jan. 27, from 12:00 – 3:00 P.M. We are asking all families to invite a friend, neighbor, relative, or co-worker to visit St. John and learn more about our school. Invitation fliers are coming home with next week’s Banner. We will also have ads in the News-Sun and a direct mail card in the weeks ahead.

Also, we are looking for some additional help in promoting our Open House. We have posters available. If you have a business or frequent a business that would be willing to put up a poster advertising our Open Houses, please ask in the office for one. Or, if you would be willing to deliver posters to a few area businesses for us, please let us know in the office.

It is true that word of mouth advertising is our best form of advertising and we appreciate your help in spreading the word about St. John!

St. John Students Get Set to Serve

Last year, many Lutheran schools in the Fort Wayne area joined together in an offering challenge. St. John was the winner, with the highest per-student average offerings collected! This year, schools are joining together in a new competition, one which involves service hours completed at school! We are making plans for all of our students to participate in various service projects throughout this month. Some may be done in individual classrooms while others may involve classes coming together. If you have an idea for a meaningful service project, please let us know!

Science Fair

Inquiry, investigation, problem solving, research, time management, public speaking: all of these skills and more can be built through working on a Science Fair project! This is a great opportunity for children to explore an area that they are interested in. Information on the St. John Science Fair has been made available to students in grades 1-8. Your questions can be answered by your teacher or by our Science Fair chairperson, Don Schroeder. The projects will be due in February and the full schedule is available in the packet. We encourage all students to participate in this worthwhile event!

National Lutheran Schools Week

St. John, along with other Lutheran Schools around the country, will be celebrated the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 3. Special events are being planned for that week to help our students recognize the blessings we have at St. John. Watch for all the details to come home soon!

Mr. Thiem as he recovers at home;

These school families, prayed for last week and this week:

Carys Shire, Lillian Smoot, Brody Workman, Rhoda Bontrager, Allison Butler, Brock Cheesman, and Lukas Christian

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Ashlynn Myers, Kaitlyn McKenzie, Lauren Diehm, Lilly Moser, Olivia Tibbs, Addison Hampshire, Naomi Schroeder, Katie White, Sadie Potts, Andrew Malone, Matthew McKinley, Joshua Neuman, Danica Sattison, Lydia Reed, and Trae Mossman. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Fitness Fact

Trying to say “no” to leftover holiday goodies? Kill two birds with one stone by drinking 8 ounces of water before eating every meal and snack. You feel fuller and less likely to give in, and your body is well hydrated. It’s a Win-Win!!

Middle School Swim Team

The East Noble Middle School swim team will begin practicing after Christmas Break. St. John 6th-8th graders are welcome to participate on this team. For more information, please contact the coach, Scott Kabrich, directly at SKABRICH@eastnoble.net

Ink Cartridge Collection – NOTE CHANGE

Do you work in a place that would allow you to put a box in a prominent place to collect used printer cartridges? If so, we’d appreciate your help in doing so! Mrs. Thiem is in charge of the collection here at St. John. Thanks for your help in keeping a bit of trash out of our landfill and helping our school earn money as well!

Currently this collection receives certain LASER CARTRIDGES. As of January 1st, we will no longer be able to redeem those. Those types of cartridges should be recycled through the instructions on your cartridge, or they can also be dropped off at Office Depot for recycling. See Mrs. Thiem if you have any questions! THANK YOU!!

Thank You!

In working on today’s Banner, I see a nice big open space – must be meant for me to quickly express my thanks and appreciation for all the cards, prayers, and thoughts for my husband and family during Dave’s recent hospitalization. The outpouring of love for us has been overwhelming to say the least.

Special thanks to my sister, Chery Young, for taking care of my office, my home, and my dog. She did a fantastic job and I’m so appreciative for just being able to bark orders at her and know things would get taken care of. Mr. Walz, Mr. Wendt, Pastor Rigdon, and Mr. Sparks (chairman of our congregation) all pitched in to make things happen and I’m indebted to them as well. They are a fantastic group of guys and St. John is blessed to have each of them!

More thanks to each of you for your thoughts, prayers, gifts, and love shown to us during this time. I will work on individual notes in the weeks ahead, but in the meantime, know that your kindnesses were much appreciated.

Dave’s heart is weak, but his determination and faith are strong. Much more can be done to help his heart should it not progress as the doctors hope to see. The Cleveland Clinic experience was amazing – the best in the country!

Through this journey, we know God had us safely held in His hand inside His pocket! Just as He holds YOU!
