The Principal’s Pen

Mr. Walz and the School Board are once again seeking parent feedback in the form of a short survey. The School Board will be meeting for a planning session on Tuesday, Nov. 13. Parent input will be helpful as we look for ways we can continue to grow as a school.

A paper survey – St. John Planning Survey – is coming home with each family today. We ask that each family fill out the survey this week and return it. In addition to the paper survey, we will have an electronic version (both surveys are the same). The link for the electronic survey will be emailed out and will be posted on the school Facebook page. It is also listed below:

https://goo.gl/forms/py5cBtZ5CK6KBwaB2

This 12-question survey should only take about 10 minutes to complete. Your input is important to us as we evaluate our program and look for ways to improve. Please share your input with us using either the paper or electronic survey, whichever is easiest for you to complete.

Thank you for your help and input!

Special Offering Collection

Our chapel offering for the 1st Trimester is supporting Life and Family Services and Noble House ministries. In addition to our cash offerings, we are looking to share God’s love in the form of diapers and cleaning supplies. We would love to have every family participate by bringing in an item this week. We’ll collect them in the classrooms and then line the ramp with all that we collect. Thank you for sharing God’s blessings to your family with those served by these important ministries!

Veteran’s Day Service – THIS Friday, November 9th

We will be hosting a service to honor our servicemen and women, both active and veterans, on Friday, November 9th, at 10:45 a.m. Please invite family and friends who are serving, or have served, so we can express our thanks for their service to our country. A sheet of cards to pay tribute to those dear to us was sent home a few weeks ago. PLEASE return your cards immediately so they can be added to the display that has been created. Students are welcome to color the cards as they so choose. More cards are available for the asking. Please help us make this a special event for Veterans in our midst!

Your Next Opportunity to Support The D.C. Trip

The next fundraiser for the Washington D.C. trip is just around the corner. It’s delicious Nelson’s BBQ Chicken! The chicken will be available at ReMax (across from Walgreen’s) on Highway 6 on Saturday, November 10. This is surely one of the last opportunities of the year to get some tasty chicken before the snow flies! Don’t miss out!

Butter Braid Delivery Wednesday, NOVEMBER 14!

A big thank you to everyone who sold those delicious Butter Braid bread loaves during this fall’s fundraiser! Orders will be delivered NEXT WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 14. Please mark this date on your calendar now and plan to pick up your child’s order. Orders should be available from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT YOUR STUDENT TO TRANSPORT THE BRAIDS IF HE OR SHE IS A BUS RIDER!!

Women of St. John Fall/Winter Festival

Saturday, November 17 - 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Plan to attend the annual Festival organized by the women of our congregation on Saturday, November 17th! There will be lots of gently-used Christmas items, jewelry, baked goods, and a delicious luncheon. The Women of St. John purchase the Bibles for our fourth graders each year, and have done a myriad of other things to improve our facilities here at St. John, so your support of their event is very much appreciated!

Check out the items for sale on the Silent Auction tables in the church lobby. All proceeds will benefit the Women of St. John and the great work they do around our building and for our students. Take a moment and make a bid or two please! Bids close on Saturday at the Festival.

First Trimester Ends

This Friday marks the end of the first trimester. Look for report cards to be sent home on Monday, November 19.

INK CARTRIDGE COLLECTION

Do you work in a place that would allow you to put a box in a prominent place to collect used printer cartridges? If so, we’d appreciate your help in doing so! Mrs. Thiem is in charge of the collection here at St. John. Thanks for your help in keeping a bit of trash out of our landfill and helping our school earn money as well! See Mrs. Thiem if you have any questions! THANK YOU!!

Thanksgiving Break

Just Ahead

Just a reminder that St. John will not be in session November 21-23 to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Christmas Gift Collection

While the holidays can be an especially joyous time for most of us, it can be a time of sadness for a child of a needy family. To help in this cause, we will be taking a gift collection to be given to needy children of our school and congregation. This is strictly a voluntary donation.

Just after Thanksgiving, we will place ornaments on a Christmas tree in our school. Each ornament will have written on it either the name of a specific toy or a suggested type of gift certificate for clothing which would be enjoyed by one of our families. (We have switched to gift certificates for clothing rather than the purchase of actual clothing.)

If the item to be purchased is a toy, purchase the toy, wrap the gift, then tape the ornament on the front of the package. If you choose to purchase a gift certificate, simply place the certificate inside the envelope you take from the tree and return it to the school office. We will see that it gets to the family for whom it was intended.

It’s impossible for us to truly know the needs of all of our families. We have contacted various families that we think could use some special help this Christmas. If you were not contacted, and need help, please speak with Mr. Walz.

We feel this is a great opportunity to teach the children that the true joy of Christmas is in the spirit of giving, and it will also bring joy and Christ’s love to those with whom we are sharing.

THINK SCRIP FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING AND GIFT GIVING

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!!

PLEASE PLACE YOUR ORDERS EARLY

SO YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT!

CHRISTMAS WILL SOON BE UPON US!!

As a part of the spiritual formation we provide children, our students are preparing to help lead worship during the Advent season! Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas. Grades 3 through 5 will lead the worship on Wednesday, Nov. 28. Preschool and Grades 6 through 8 will lead the worship service on Wednesday, December 5. Grades K through 2 will lead the worship service on Wednesday, December 12. All services start at 7:00 in the Worship Center. More details will be coming home in the weeks ahead. We hope that your family will plan now to join us for these special services.

Do You Love Christmas?

With Halloween now past, we are thinking about Christmas! The Kendallville Christmas Parade is Saturday, Dec. 1, with the theme “Christmas Past”. We would love for St. John to be a part of the parade as we have been in the last few years. This is a great community event for us to participate in and a great opportunity for us to share the true meaning of Christmas with our community! We have one parent who has offered to help, can we get a couple more? It doesn’t have to be a major production, and we can give guidance and assistance. Please contact the office if you are willing to help out!

Operation Christmas Child

Please consider putting together a shoebox full of toys and school supplies for a needy child in another part of the world! This is a great way for you to teach your child the joy of giving! Don't forget to include a letter and even a picture if you'd like. All boxes should be delivered to the school office no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 19th. Unfortunately, any boxes delivered after that time will NOT be delivered as we have a strict deadline to meet. The child receiving your gift will be blessed with toys, but more importantly shown the love of Jesus through you!

Once again, St. John will serve as a Relay Collection Center for National Collection Week – the week of November 12-19. If you would be willing to spend a few hours helping to collect boxes as they arrive and package them in shipping cartons, give Mrs. Thiem a call (347-2444).

Empty shoeboxes are now available on the coatrack shelf near door #4 in the Gathering rea. Students in selected grades may use this program as their classroom Christmas project in lieu of a gift exchange between students. Stay tuned for instructions from your child’s teacher.

This is the month – it is finally here!

Operation Christmas Child Collection Week is near!

November 12 to 19, I’ll be manning the post

The rush time is here – it’s no time to coast!

Again, we need money for the shipping fee

Everyone knows those costs are not free.

Nine dollars for each box is asked and that’s not a lot

Considering distance, it’s really a small dot!

So send in your money, your check or your dollar

If you need me to come with a truck – just give a holler!

It’s been fun each month, well…it has been for me.

To find what, for shoeboxes, in the box that you leave.

I’m sorry if my poems make you cringe – just remember….

I’m taking time off – no poem in December!!!
