THE BANNER

St. John Lutheran School

March 19, 2018 Number 29

From The Principal’s Pen

All glory, laud, and honor To You Redeemer King,

To whom the lips of children Made sweet hosannas ring.

You are the King of Israel

And David’s royal Son,

Now in the Lord’s name coming,

Our King and Blessed One. (All Glory Laud and Honor, LSB#442)

This Sunday is Palm Sunday and marks the beginning of Holy Week and the end of our Lenten journey. For 6 weeks now we have been building to this week and the observances of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and, of course, Easter Sunday! This week is what it is all about for us as Christians!

On Palm Sunday Jesus was celebrated as a king, entering Jerusalem with a parade of cheering people praising him. People waved palm branches, they laid their cloaks on the ground, and they shouted alleluia. By Friday He was dying the worst type of death possible, death on a cross.

Today, people respond to Jesus the same way. They praise Him as king. They crucify Him. They claim to be Christians and live their life showing God’s leadership. They deny the existence of God or any control He has over them. We have the same opportunities to respond to who Jesus really is.

We’ve been on a journey and we’re nearing the end. Please join us if you don’t have a church home as we complete the journey in Holy Week and Easter! (Service opportunities and times are listed elsewhere in The Banner.)

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

I Scream, You Scream…

During Lutheran Schools Week, St. John participated in an offering challenge with other Lutheran schools to raise money for hurricane relief. You may recall that St. John raised over $2,000 (one-fifth of the total raised by all schools) and averaged over $12 per student. What an awesome outpouring of God’s love! You may also recall that we won an ice cream party as a result of our generosity. The party will talk place this Friday at 2:00 when all students will be treated to ice cream sundaes served by the staff of The Lutheran Schools Partnership. Way to go, St. John!!

Tuition Assistance

St. John Lutheran School is a ministry of St. John Lutheran Church. As such, every child’s tuition is supported through the church. St. John does not want any child to miss out on the Lutheran education we provide because of family finances. We have several avenues of tuition assistance available to families in need. Families are asked to complete an application for tuition grant and aid. The only application available for this year is online and can be accessed at www.factstuitionaid.com. Please contact the school office for questions.

Breakfast Price Change

After a recent inspection and review by a Federal Hot Lunch Representative we were told that we needed to raise our breakfast price. We tried to see if we could avoid doing this, but we do not have a choice. We were told to raise our price by 55 cents. However, in order to avoid passing such a large increase on to our parents, we are going to subsidize some of that. Effective on Wednesday, March 14, the breakfast price will increase to $1.45.

OSOB

This is the week for the exciting conclusion to our One School, One Book project of reading Nim’s Island. Some kids have told me they have read ahead and others have said that they are reluctantly reading just one chapter a night (because they are so interested in what will happen next). Even if you haven’t started or been able to keep up, you can start now! Join in the family fun, encourage reading, and enjoy a great story! The final reading assignments are:

Monday, Mar. 19: Chapter 14

Tuesday, Mar. 13: Chapters 15-16

All families re welcome to join us this Friday, March 23, at 6:30, in the Worship Cneter for a family Movie Night showing of Nim’s Island. We’ll have popcorn and you are welcome to bring water to drink, since we’re in the Worship Center.

Enrollment for the 2018-2019 school year for both our returning parents and for new parents is now open. You can re-enroll your child for the coming year by accessing the re-enrollment packet in ParentsWeb. TinCaps Reading Program

All preschool through 8th grade students are eligible to participate in the TinCaps Reading Program. By meeting a reading goal (set by the teacher) each week for 4 weeks, the student can earn a free ticket to a TinCaps game along with some other prizes. Parents can buy additional tickets. Our game day is Saturday, May 19, but if you can’t make it that day you can use your ticket voucher for another game. Reading that is used for other incentive programs, like Book It, or even for classroom AR requirements can also count for this. The program runs through March 26.

Teacher Search Update

Yesterday, St. John congregation issued a Divine Call to one of our teacher candidates and was informed of other actions taken by the School Board for other staffing openings. Here are the actions taken in securing teachers for next year:

Divine Call to Miss Christina Warnier to be our next Kindergarten teacher.

Contract offered to Miss Ashley Ort to be our next 1st Grade teacher.

Contract offered to Mrs. Alisha Mast to continue as our Preschool teacher.

Recommendation to Lutheran Special Education Ministries to issue a Divine Call to

Miss Sarah Koch to be our next Resource Room teacher.

Please pray that God would direct each of these individuals and lead them to accept our offers and join us.

A separate page with bios of each of these candidates was sent home with all students today.

Feeling Anxious?

Anxiety is something that we all experience from time to time. But, for some, it can be debilitating. Crosswinds (a Christian counseling service that a few of our families have partnered with) is hosting a seminar on anxiety at the Cole Center Family YMCA. The seminar, “Living with Anxiety” will be on Tuesday, April 10, from 6:00-8:00. Please consider attending this informative meeting.

Great Parenting Resource

Have your kids ever wanted to read a book, watch a movie, or play a video game and you weren’t sure whether it was appropriate for them? Did you ever give in to their pressure even though you weren’t sure? We all do, but there is help for you! Mrs. Schroeder recently shared an online resource with her parents that would be good for all of us to explore. The website is www.commonsensemedia.org. The site reviews books, video games, apps, websites, and movies and gives information on educational value, positive messages, positive role models, violence, sex, language, and consumerism, drinking, and drugs. The site is a great help to being an informed parent!

Additionally, another good website that gives similar reviews from a Christian perspective is www.pluggedin.com.

Spring Break – No Bus Service Alert

Our Spring Break is two weeks away. This is one aspect where our calendar varies from East Noble’s calendar. East Noble will take two weeks for Spring Break, and we will only take one. Therefore, there will be no bus service the week of March 26th. St. John Spring Break is April 2-6 (the second week of East Noble’s break).

NO EAST NOBLE BUS TRANSPORTATION

Monday, March 26 thru Friday, March 30– no bus service either way

NEXT WEEK!! NEXT WEEK!! NEXT WEEK!!

I’m trying to get you to

start looking out

For items for shoeboxes

to shout about!

I’ve made a fancy collection box

for toothbrushes, crayons, for toys and for socks

Each month I will give

a suggestion or two

Of what you could bring –

but it must be new!

For March, how about a

toothbrush or paste

Any you give will not go to waste!

Just bring your donation

with you to school

It will be used, by God, as a tool

To convey His love to kids in dire need

And you’ll feel great

for this loving deed!

Anything else that you

think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well

In the lobby you’ll find it

upon the floor

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!
