January 15, 2018 Number 20

Principal’s Pen

Last week I shared 4 ways to help your children grow in their faith: Pray, read the Bible, go to church, and welcome their questions. Here are 3 more ideas.

Focus on relationships over rules: Kids need rules and boundaries. But, kids also need to know that their relationship with you is more important than just following a list of rules. It’s the same with their faith – a relationship with God is much more valuable than feeling that you just have to follow a set of rules. (See Psalm 139:1, 13-16)

Let your actions match your words: Your children aren’t perfect, but neither are you. It’s good for your children to see your weaknesses, and for you to say you’re sorry and to ask for their forgiveness. Be consistent in how you live, whether at church, at home, or around town. (See Galatians 6:4)

Serve others: Our sinful nature is to focus on ourselves. When parents and children serve, especially together, the focus is turned outward. Serving helps kids know that they have a purpose and can be used by God for something bigger than themselves. (See 1 Peter 4:10)

As we begin a new year, this is the perfect time to try something new. I encourage you to pick one or two of these ideas and put them into practice. If you falter, it’s OK, just pick it up and try again. And if one of these ideas becomes a new habit, then start working on another one. May God bless you as you help your children grow in their faith.

Progress Reports & Parent/Teacher Conferences

Information on signing up for our 2nd Trimester Parent/Teacher Conferences came home last week. This year, we will hold these conferences 2/3 of the way through the trimester, like we do for the 1st Trimester conferences. Conferences will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 31, and Thursday, Feb. 1, starting at 2:15. School will dismiss at 1:55 these days. Progress Reports will be given out at these conferences. After the conferences there will be 3 more weeks to make necessary changes before the end of the trimester. Thank you to those who have already returned your conference sign-up form. If yours slipped past you, please look for it and return it so that we can schedule your conference.

St. John Open House

St. John will be hosting an Open House for the 2018-2019 school year on Sunday, Jan. 21, from 12:00 – 3:00 P.M. We are asking all families to invite a friend, neighbor, relative, or co-worker to visit St. John and learn more about our school. Invitation postcards came home last week.

Also, we are looking for some additional help in promoting our Open House. We have posters available. If you have a business or frequent a business that would be willing to put up a poster advertising our Open Houses, please ask in the office for one. Or, if you would be willing to deliver posters to a few area businesses for us, please let us know in the office.

It is true that word of mouth advertising is our best form of advertising and we appreciate your help in spreading the word about St. John!

Re-enrollment for 2018-2019

Coming home today is information about the 2018-2019 school year, including the calendar for next year. Enrolling for next year will happen through your ParentsWeb account and directions on how to do that are also coming home today. Applications for new students will be accepted on Monday, Jan. 22, following our first Open House.

National Lutheran Schools Week

Did you know that St. John is one of almost 2,100 Lutheran preschool, elementary, and high schools across the nation? Did you know that these schools contain around 250,000 students? Did you know that the Lutheran schools are the second largest parochial school system in the United States (only the Catholic system is larger)? We have much to be thankful for as a part of this school system!

National Lutheran Schools Week is coming up on January 21st – 28th. We are celebrating our wonderful Lutheran School.

The week’s fun activities are:

MONDAY - School Spirit Day/ Blue & White Day (wear

St. John colors or t-shirts)

TUESDAY – Fake Mustache Day (have some hairy fun!)

WEDNESDAY – Dress to Impress (wear your Sunday

THURSDAY – Twin or Triplet Day (grab a friend or two

and plan to dress alike)

FRIDAY – Pajama Day (wear your pajamas and bring slippers, blankets, stuffed

animals – per teacher’s instructions)

SCRIP: New Year, New Habit

Would you like free money? Do you shop at any of the following stores?

Walmart Arby’s Dairy Queen Pizza Forum

BP Dietrich’s Walgreens CVS

Applebees Home Depot Joanna’s Peachey’s

These are just a few of the retailers for which we stock scrip. When you purchase a SCRIP card a percentage of the face value is credited back to you. It really is that simple!

As we begin a new year, why not start forming a new habit of using SCRIP? All you have to do is stop in the office any time, purchase your SCRIP cards, and start saving money. The more you use SCRIP, the more you’ll save.

For those of you who have been using SCRIP, your balances for the last half of 2017 will soon be applied to the account of your choice.

Box Tops for Education

Please keep saving those Box Tops for Education! We recently received a check in the amount of $471.40 for those little scraps of cardboard we saved from the landfill! Special thanks to Miss Young, who tackles the tedious job of clipping, sorting, and counting, as she has spare moments in her office! Keep saving please!

These students and their families will be prayed for this week:\

Olivia Schott, Jack Slater, Allison Walkup, Alaina Andrews, and Briggs Cheesman

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Abby Hale, Ireland Blake, Elizabeth Walkup, Trae Mossman, and Violet Hobart

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Remember that we have a Suggestion/Question box in the lobby area (with the soup label, Box Tops, pop tab and ink cartridge drop off boxes). Your feedback is welcome!

Track Coach Needed

We are in search of a Head Track Coach for the 2018 season. Practices will begin early to mid-March and run through most of May. Please contact Mrs. Kline, Athletic Director, for more information. jkline@stjohneagles.org or 349-2395.

News From Mrs. Atz

It is with sadness for St. John, but happiness for Mrs. Atz, that we announce her retirement at the end of this school year. Mrs. Atz has served here at St. John for 30 years, and we give thanks to God for her ministry here and for the hundreds of lives she has touched!

While we cannot replace Mrs. Atz, we will begin the search for our next 1st grade teacher. We trust that God will guide us to the right person to join us and be a blessing to many children as Mrs. Atz was!

Additional Staff Changes

Both Mrs. Bader and Mrs. Antonetti have husbands who are studying to be pastors. This April they will find out where they will spend their next year while on vicarage. Vicarage is a year-long training in a congregation (kind of like student teaching). We are excited for this phase of life for the Baders and Antonettis, but this means that Mrs. Bader and Mrs. Antonetti won’t be able to teach next year. So, we are also starting our search for new Kindergarten and Resource Room teachers.

With several teaching positions to fill, you may wonder how we go about that. First, we accept and seek out qualified candidates. If you know of a great teacher, please submit his or her name to the office or have him or her contact Mr. Walz. We also seek out candidates through our District Office and through a database of Lutheran teachers. We have also advertised positions at other area churches, through Facebook, and on Indeed. Once we have received candidates, we narrow the list down to 3-5 that we want to interview. The School Board and Mr. Walz conduct interviews and then do reference checks on the candidate that we feel is the best match for our school ministry.

Throughout the whole process we pray that God would lead us to the right person. We ask that you keep this process in your prayers! We have been blessed with many great teachers here at St. John over the years. We trust that God will lead us to just the right people to fill these open positions.

Classroom Aide Needed

Mrs. Jimenez will no longer be able to serve as 2nd grade aide after this Friday. We are sad to see her go, as she is sad to be leaving! But, her family needs require different work for her. If you love kids, like a variety of tasks during the day, and are looking for work – or know someone who is, please contact the school office.

Tax Reform and St. John Tuition

One of the provisions in the tax Reform Act passed last December is that families can use their 529 accounts to pay for K-12 education and not just college education. This could be great news for those of you who already have a 529 account started. It’s also another great reason to start one of these accounts if you haven’t. We will share more details as they become available.

Christmas Break Improvements

If you’ve been in the building you’ve noticed a few improvements that were completed over Christmas Break. The gym lights have been replaced with new, high-efficiency LED lights. It’s impossible to not notice the difference!

Our drinking fountains have been replaced with new fountains, two of which include bottle fillers. In just a few short days, we have already kept over 400 bottles from going into the landfills! It’s great to have an easier option to fill our water bottles! Special thanks to The Women of St. John for their financial support of this project!

Science Fair

It’s time to gear up for our school Science Fair! The Science Fair provides our budding scientists with the opportunity to explore an area of scientific interest. Beyond learning more about this area, working on a Science Fair project helps children grow in their planning ability, time management skills, research skills, writing, organization, creativity, and public speaking skills. Information is available from your child’s teacher or from the office. Please encourage your child to participate! Projects will be due Monday, Feb. 19, and the Science Fair Awards Night will be Friday, Feb. 23, from 6:00-7:00.

If you need a display board you can get one from the office. The boards are 32” high and 36” wide and are available first come-first served. You can make your check out to “St. John PTL”. Each board is $5.50.

Geography Bee January 24

On Wednesday, January 24, don’t miss our school’s Geography Bee where students in grades 4-8 will compete for the opportunity to represent our school in the national Geography Bee. The Bee will begin at 1:15 p.m.in the Worship Center. Parents, please join us!

Well, Christmas has passed for another year, but just because the tree is down and all those cookies have been consumed, doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about Operation Christmas Child – the shoebox project! Don’t forget to watch for those after-Christmas sales and pick up some items for your box(es). November’s collection week will roll around quicker than we think!

The collection box remains in the church lobby and soon I will be passing along suggestions of what to put

in the box each month. Perhaps you would rather just donate an item here and there rather than assemble an entire box.

See me if you have any questions!!
