Here are the next 5 ideas from the “10 Keys to Raising Great Kids Who Love Jesus” article I read:

Love the Spouse: The best parenting tool is a happy marriage. Solid marriages create solid kids. Parents who love each other have kids who love Jesus.

Pray the Prayers: Prayer is a vital part of kids growing up to love Jesus. Kids who grow up to love Jesus have parents who pray for them.

Set the Boundaries: Children who stray the most are kids whose parents didn’t set reasonable rules and boundaries. Parents who are consistent in enforcing set rules and boundaries actually end up becoming very close to their children. Of course, this doesn’t mean over-doing rules or having rules without relationship.

Monitor the Friends: Peers are a huge part of whether or not kids grow up to love Jesus. You become like the people you spend the most time with. Parents whose kids grow up to love Jesus know who their kids are friends with and make sure they have good influences around them.

Cultivate the Gratitude: A sense of entitlement is the opposite of the heart of Jesus. Parents whose kids grow up to follow Him help their kids cultivate an attitude of gratitude. Thanksgiving is not just a day of the year to eat turkey and watch football in their home, it’s a way of life.

Jump Rope For Heart THIS Thursday!

Our Jump Rope for Heart/Hoops for Heart Event

is upon us!!

This Thursday our gym will be rocking with kids and adults jumping rope, shooting baskets and dancing to the music. Please encourage your child to raise donations as we shoot for our $6000 goal for the American Heart Association. All donations need to be in the day of the event-Thursday. If you are available on Thursday and would like to help turn a rope or shoot some hoops with the kids, please just let us know when you would like to come. Here is the schedule:

8:15-9:15. 4th and 5th

8:55 – 9:15 T/Th Preschool

9:15-10:15. 6th-8th

10:15-11:00. K and 1st

1:15-2:15 2nd and 3rd

In addition, we can also earn money for our P.E. program! U.S. Games, a supply house for physical education equipment has offered us $300 in equipment in an effort to support the A.H.A. To receive this money, 50 students from St. John would need to do the following before February 16th (this Thursday):

1 Sign up at heart.org/hoops to receive online donations.

2 Take the Zoo Crew Ecard Health Challenge. Commit to improving his/her health by doing one of the following: drinking more water, exercising more, or eating more fruits and vegetables.

3 Send out 10 Ecards or 10 emails seeking donations for the A.H.A.

Since this is all done through the A.H.A. website, I will be notified each time a student completes these tasks. If 100 students complete the challenge, the school would receive $500 in equipment. As of this writing, we have 13 students who have taken the challenge! Would you be willing to help us? We certainly do appreciate your time and effort!

Sincerely, Mrs. Barr-P.E.

The projects will be displayed to the public on the night of our Showcase on March 10. We look forward to seeing the great projects and celebrating the hard work of our students!

Spring Fundraiser Begins!

We hope to get everyone excited about our frozen food fundraiser to raise needed funds for the work of our Parent-Teacher League.

The sale begins TODAY, February 13, and will run for two weeks. Order forms are due back by Monday, February 27. The sale will be on a PREPAY basis. Items will be delivered on Wednesday, March 22. The sale is conducted on a voluntary basis. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Please mark March 2 & 3, on your calendar for Parent-Teacher Conferences. We’d like every family to participate as we seek to make the rest of the school year as beneficial to students as possible. As we did in the fall, school will dismiss at 1:55 (bus riders can wait until 2:45 to catch their buses) and conferences will be held from 2:15-7:00 (6:00 on Friday). Conferences will be scheduled for students in preschool through fifth grade this weekend and notifications of times will be sent home with students today. If changes need to be made, please contact the teacher directly. Remember that conferences with middle school teachers are not being scheduled for a specific time but rather parents will visit their student’s teachers in the Worship Center as their schedule allows during conference hours of 2:15 – 6:45 on Thursday and 2:15 – 5:45 on Friday.

2016 Tax Deduction Information

Parents, as you fill out your 2016 Tax Return, you should be aware that you may be eligible for a $1,000 tax deduction per dependent child that is enrolled in a nonpublic school such as St. John. Your tuition payments would qualify you for this deduction. In order to claim this deduction, you need to know that St. John’s school code is C985. The deduction code is 626. If you have questions, please check with your tax preparer or your tax preparation software.

St. John Showcase 2017!!

We’re gearing up for St. John Showcase 2017!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 10th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities!

St. John Showcase 2017 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. All entries must be screened by Ms. Dencklau to be sure they are appropriate and polished. Please contact Ms. Dencklau with any questions. The deadline to return entry forms is Friday, February 17.

TinCaps Reading Program

Information on this year’s TinCap Reading Program was sent home last week. All preschool through 8th grade students are eligible to participate. By meeting a reading goal (set by the teacher) each week for 4 weeks, the student can earn a free ticket to a TinCaps game along with some other prizes. Parents can by our additional tickets. Our game day is Saturday, April 29, but if you can’t make it that day you can use your ticket voucher for another game. Reading that is used for other incentive programs, like Book It, or even for classroom AR requirements can also count for this. Watch for the information coming home. The program runs from Feb. 13 through March 13; and let’s get reading!

We have a good supply of bumper stickers advertising our school and would like to distribute them to interested parents. If you would like to show your support of our school in this way, please contact Mrs. Thiem for your free sticker!

Scholastic Book Fair

St. John will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from Sunday, March 5 through Sunday, March 12. Huge thanks to Summer Moser for serving as chairperson once again! Plan now to visit the Book Fair and find some great new reading material for your kids, and maybe even for yourself!

St. John Endowment Needs You!

Many of our school families have received the blessing of tuition assistance from a variety of sources. One of those sources is the St. John Endowment Fund. This fund provides around $30,000 of tuition assistance each year. These funds come from the interest income and not the principal balance so that the Endowment will continue to be a blessing long into the future. The Lutheran Foundation offers to St. John a grant that matches donations to our Endowment Fund. St. John can receive almost $25,000 each year if we have that amount donated to our Endowment Fund. Plus, The Lutheran Foundation will allow us to use the interest on another $25,000 each year. In other words, your gift to the St. John Endowment Fund is more than doubled! This provides a tremendous blessing for our school and students. Would you consider making a donation to the St. John Endowment Fund?

Registration Timeline

Enrollment for the 2017-2018 school year for both our returning students and for new students is now open. 3. The biggest need right now is help in securing other donations. If you are able to help, please let the office know. We can give you a list of area businesses and what they have donated in the past. We can even match you up with businesses you frequent or have a connection with.

4. Pre-Auction Special: We will be offering select auction items for silent bid before our May 5 auction. These items will be class projects and teacher treats (special outings/events that your child can do with a favorite teacher). These items will be displayed and open for bidding from March 2 (the first night of Parent-Teacher Conferences) through the SHOWCASE night on March 10. Bidding on these items closes at 9:00 PM on Friday, March 10. Don’t miss out on these special auction items!

Custodial Help Needed

We are looking for some volunteers to help clean our building in the absence of one of our custodians, Randy Thornton. Mr. Thornton had knee surgery several weeks ago and we are having some difficulty keeping up on the tasks at hand. If you would be available on a one-time (or more!) basis, please speak with Mrs. Thiem in the office. Thanks!

New in ParentsWeb

In addition to being able to re-enroll for next year, we have added another feature to ParentsWeb. You are now able to pay hot lunch and extended care bills online using a credit card!

• Log in to your ParentsWeb account. https://logins2.renweb.com/logins/ParentsWeb-Login.aspx

• Click on the Family Information link on the left.

• In the Family Billing box you will see your Hot Lunch and Extended Care balances (remember that a negative balance means you have money in that account and a positive balance shows what you owe).

• Click on the Pay Now link and follow the prompts to make a payment.
