THE BANNER

St. John Lutheran School

January 23, 2017 - Number 21

Principal’s Pen

I have spent 35 years of my life in Lutheran Schools. Without giving away my age ( ☺ ), that is just over 2/3 of my life! No, it didn’t take me extra time to get through the 8th grade! Most of those years have been as a teacher or principal. To say that Lutheran schools hold an important and dear place in my life is an understatement!

St. John Lutheran School is a part of something much bigger than just our school. In the Fort Wayne area alone, there are 17 elementary schools and one high school. But, it’s even bigger than that! We are a part of a network that includes over 2,200 schools, including early childhood centers, elementary schools, high schools, International schools, and colleges and universities. These schools educate over 250,000 students, daily sharing the love of God with them. Over 21,000 teachers and countless more staff people work and minister in these schools. If you were to walk into any one of these Lutheran schools, you would certainly find a unique atmosphere and culture. But, you would also find some things that are the same as what you experience here at St. John.

There are so many things that make me proud to be a part of St. John and Lutheran schools in general. I love to see our kids succeed and excel using the gifts God has given them. It doesn’t matter if it is competing in Spell Bowl, leading an Advent worship service, performing at Showcase, giving a presentation in class, or playing in a basketball game; I love to see kids using their talents and giving God glory as they do! I love to work with parents and see parents involved in the lives and education of their kids. I love seeing our kids involved in the community near and far, learning to live lives of service. Most of all, though, I love seeing kids grow in their faith, and being able to partner with parents in this most important endeavor!

Lord God Heavenly Father, thank you for the blessing of Lutheran schools: for all those who work in these schools and for all that attend them. Please continue to bless what happens here at St. John and in each Lutheran school. We pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen

New Small Group Beginning and YOU are Invited!!

Every summer, the St. John Youth Group takes around twenty 6-12th graders to the Momentum Youth Conference. There they hear powerful speakers that challenge and strengthen their faith. If, as a parent, you are interested to know what the Momentum Youth Conference is like or are just looking to be challenged in your own faith, there’s a new small group starting up in February. Former school parent Bambee Lehman will be hosting “Momentum Rewind,” a series of videos and study guides that relive the 2016 Momentum Youth Conference.

The group will begin February 9, and will meet every other Thursday from 7-8:30pm in the new library. Please contact Bambee (347-5282) or Nick Hayden, the youth leader, (343-0561) so we can know who’s coming.

Spring Auction

Please mark the date now on your new 2017 calendar for Friday, May 5, for our annual Spring Auction. This great event, at beautiful Sylvan Cellars, is a highlight of the year!

An event of this scope doesn’t happen by itself. We need you to be a part of the planning. When many of you join in the work becomes more manageable and more fun! With enough help the tasks can be broken down and no one’s part becomes too big! If you would like to help please let the school office know. Our first planning meeting will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 5:00, in the school library. Even if you can’t make it that night, but want to help, please let the office know. Thank you for stepping forward to help make this year’s auction a great night of blessings for our school!

Geography Bee January 26

On Thursday, January 26, don’t miss our school’s Geography Bee where students in grades 4-8 will compete for the opportunity to represent our school in the national Geography Bee. The Bee will begin at 1:15 p.m.in the Worship Center. Parents, please join us!

Bunco Night TONIGHT!!!

Child care will be provided. Please RSVP to the school office, especially if you will need child care, so that we can plan appropriately.

eLearning

Our first make-up eLearning Day was this past Saturday. Students can remain after school to use school computers and/or receive help from their teachers. All eLearning work is due by Wednesday morning at 8:00. A survey was recently sent home in paper and email form seeking your input on the possibility of conducting eLearning on the day school is canceled. If you haven’t returned that survey we would still welcome your input. If you need another copy of the survey you can get one in the school office.

New in ParentsWeb

In addition to being able to re-enroll for next year, we have added another feature to ParentsWeb. You are now able to pay hot lunch and extended care bills online using a credit card!

• Log in to your ParentsWeb account. https://logins2.renweb.com/logins/ParentsWeb-Login.aspx

• Click on the Family Information link on the left.

• In the Family Billing box you will see your Hot Lunch and Extended Care balances (remember that a negative balance means you have money in that account and a positive balance shows what you owe).

• Click on the Pay Now link and follow the prompts to make a payment.

School Skating Party

Help celebrate the end of the 2nd Trimester at our school skating party on SATURDAY, MARCH 4, from 4:30 – 6:30 at the Skatin’ Station in Auburn. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss the fun!

Science Fair - - Monday, February 20

It’s time to gear up for our school Science Fair! The Science Fair provides our budding scientists with the opportunity to explore an area of scientific interest. Beyond learning more about this area, working on a Science Fair project helps children grow in their planning ability, time management skills, research skills, writing, organization, creativity, and public speaking skills. Science Fair materials have been made available to students and are available in the office.

If you need a display board you can get one from the office. The boards are 32” high and 36” wide and are available first come-first served. You can make your check out to “St. John PTL”. Each board is $5.50.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Isaac Bennett, Jackson Deskins, Grace Palmer, Lexy Kammerer, Fyo Hayden, Olivia Tibbs, and Cameryn Proxmire.

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Unwanted Snow Pants?

Our preschool teachers would love to have your no-longer-needed snowpants in sizes 3T, 4T, and 5T for kids who don’t have the proper gear when the class heads outside to play. See Mrs. McBee or Mrs. Anglin if you have questions, or just send them on in and we will see that they get them. Thank you!

Up For Grabs….

With the renovation of the storage/refrigerator area, there is a large steel cabinet in the gym that is no longer needed to store funeral dinner dishes.

There is also some audio/visual equipment that we no longer need.

If any of these items spark your interest, please see Cathy Thiem in the office. First come – first served.

Super Bowl Time!

Do You Love Kids?

Do you love kids? Do you love to learn? Do you love to work on a team? Do you love to solve problems? If the answer is yes, then we want you to consider helping coach our Lego Robotics Team. Mrs. Anderson has ‘retired’ and we are in need of a new coach. We would really like to have 2 or 3 people share this opportunity. Mrs. Anderson is willing to do some training and you can learn the Lego and robot parts. If you answered yes to the questions above, you will do great in this role, and we would love to have you consider it! Contact the office for more information or if you are interested.

Update Your Kroger Community Rewards

Remember that your designation of St. John as the recipient of your Kroger Community Rewards must be renewed annually. Check the bottom of your receipt to see if your status is current. It should clearly state that St. John is receiving your rewards. If not, PLEASE call 800-576-4377 to re-enroll in the program. You will not receive notification that your designation has expired, so please check!

St. John’s NPO number is 10129.

We receive several hundreds of dollars each quarter from this program. We need your help to continue receiving this blessing!!! Thank you!!

Well, Christmas has passed for another year, but just because the tree is down and all those cookies have been consumed, doesn’t mean it’s time to forget about Operation Christmas Child – the shoebox project! Don’t forget to watch for those after-Christmas sales and pick up some items for your box(es). November’s collection week will roll around quicker than we think!

The collection box remains in the church lobby and soon I will be passing along suggestions of what to put

in the box each month. Perhaps you would rather just donate an item here and there rather than assemble an entire box.

See me if you have any questions!! Mrs. Thiem
