THE BANNER

St. John Lutheran School

September 12, 2016 Number 5

The Principal’s Pen

Last week I shared the first three shifts in our parenting styles as presented by Dr. Tim Elmore. In short these shifts are:

1. Replace FEAR with WISDOM.

2. Replace a focus on GRADES with a focus on GROWTH.

3. Replace CLUTTER with SIMPLICITY.

This week I’d like to share the other two shifts Dr. Elmore talked about:

4. When considering our child’s IDENTITY, we must replace UNCONTROLLABLES with CONTROLLABLES. Our kids (and us) often get stuck. They think, “I’m no good at math.” or “I’m no good at sports.” This discourages effort and growth. Instead, we need to think “I’m no good at math, yet.” This shows that we can work at it and get better at it. It’s also important to focus on things our kids can control. Instead of focusing on outward appearance or other inborn qualities, focus on qualities like effort, kindness, persistence, and friendliness. These are areas that everyone can work at and grow in.

5. When we give feedback, we must replace emphasizing BEHAVIOR with BELIEF. When correcting our kids it is so easy to focus on what they did wrong. We punish them for what happened. Instead, we should be looking forward. How can we discipline so that our kids will make a better choice the next time? How can we focus on their ability to do better instead of condemning them for what they did wrong?

Parenting is hard work! We face multiple opportunities every day to get it wrong or get it right. And past success is no guarantee of future success! May God bless you, parents, in making changes as needed as we continue in this journey of parenthood!

Paper Banners Coming To an End

Starting Monday, Sep. 26, we will no longer send paper copies of the Banner home with every family. The Banner can be accessed on our website: www.stjohneagles.org. If you would still like to receive a paper copy of the Banner please let the office know and we will gladly send a copy home with your child.

Grandparents Day - Tuesday, Sep. 20

We’re looking forward to welcoming all the grandparents and special guests to our building. We’ll start our afternoon together at 1:15. Start inviting your grandparents or other special guests so the kids are not disappointed!

Please remember in prayer…

Alex Padilla and his family upon the death of his cousin, Derek Padilla, in a car accident last week, and also Derek’s passenger, Lucas Oberkiser, who also perished as a result of the accident;

These school families, prayed for this week:

Sarah Burtch, Audrey Butler, Tisha Campbell, Lisa Chambers, and Bryan and Brooke Cheesman

School Pictures – THIS WEDNESDAY

School pictures will be THIS Wednesday, September 14. Parents of 3-year old preschool students that meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays may bring their child to school on the 14th for Picture Day. Or, if you prefer, Picture Re-take Day has been scheduled for Thursday, October 27 and you can have your child’s picture taken that day. This year we will again be using Derby Photography for our class pictures and yearbook services. All students in our school will be pictured during their normal class time. We still need a parent or two as volunteers for this event. Please let Mrs. Thiem know that you are interested!! THANK YOU!!!

St. John Supporters

Join us this Wednesday, Sep. 14, from 3:15-4:00, in the library for the first meeting of this new group. St. John Supporters are parents dedicated to supporting and encouraging our students and staff through different activities and projects. During this meeting we will identify some projects and events that we can get started on. If you are interested, but can’t make this meeting, please let the office know and we’ll get you connected!

SJK Parent Night

Last Spring we surveyed our parents about hosting evenings for our parents. We found that parents were most interested in a social time or learning more about a parenting topic. We also learned that a weekday evening or weekend evening were the preferred times. So, in response to that information, we are hosting….

KAHOOT NIGHT

Monday, Sep. 19, 6:30 PM

Worship Center

Kahoots are interactive online quizzes on a variety of topics. Some of our teachers Kahoot with their students as a review game. Have some fun competing against other St. John parents to see how smart you are! Bring your phone or tablet or use one of ours. Child Care will be provided. Please let the office know if you are planning to attend and bring kids so that we can plan accordingly.

APPLE FESTIVAL!

The biggest fundraiser of the year for our Parent-Teacher League is Kendallville’s Apple Festival. It takes many helping hands to make this project a success. Sixteen people are needed for each shift at the Fairgrounds!

A big thank you to all of you who have signed up already to work at this year’s Apple Festival! However, lots of help is still needed!!! If you are unsure what volunteering would entail, please speak with Mrs. Thiem. WE EXPECT ALL ST. JOHN FAMILIES TO BE INVOLVED WITH THE FESTIVAL! IT TAKES US ALL TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK! PLEASE DECIDE HOW YOU CAN HELP. IF YOU HAVE YET TO RESPOND, AN ADDITIONAL FORM IS BEING SENT YOUR WAY. PLEASE RESPOND! WE NEED EVERYONE!

WE ARE SENDING A PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE THIS WEEK. IF YOU CAN HELP FILL ANY OF THE GAPS, PLEASE LET MRS. THIEM KNOW ASAP! THANK YOU!!!!!

parents and teachers to communicate and work

together for the good of each student.

Sign-up sheets have been sent home with students

in K-5. Please return your sheet by Wed., Sept. 21.

Middle School teachers will be stationed so parents

can seek them out to meet.

Sept. 26 and want to have every family slotted.

PLEASE RESPOND BY THE 21st AT THE

LATEST OR YOU WILL BE SCHEDULED

SCRIP Time

SCRIP can save you money! Please stop in the office any time and purchase some SCRIP cards. The percentage that the school receives back from your purchases helps provide for the education of your children. Plus, St. John credits half of that percentage back to the account of your choosing back at St. John. The school wins and you win!

Music Together – Happy Keys

Happy Keys offers family classes for children birth through kindergarten and the adults who love them. When you join Happy Keys Music Together, each semester you’ll learn twenty-five new songs and activities that your family will enjoy in class and at home. Your children will love zooming to the moon like a “Rocketship”, wiggling and clapping to “Shake Those ‘Simmons Down”, and drumming to the Native American folksong “The Earth Is Our Mother”.

In addition to imaginative and engaging weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, online access to the curriculum and support materialson the Family Music Zone, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas. This semester, we will also be celebrating the International Day of Peace.

Join us for a FREE Demonstration class on Friday, September 2nd, at 11:00 a.m. in the Worship Center. To find out more about our program, classes, or to schedule your class visit, please call St. John music teacher, Ali Dencklau at (319) 939-7755 or connect on the web at: chopinali@yahoo.com, playhappykeys.com, or on facebook.com/playhappykeys. The first semester runs from September 16 – Nov. 18.

THERE WILL BE NO SPELL-BOWL PRACTICE ON THURSDAY, DUE TO OUTDOOR EDUCATION AT CAMP LUTHERHAVEN.

The last days of summer are coming up fast

Our boxes are filling with love that will last.

Forever these kids, and their families too

Will remember the kindness that came from you.

Our boxes are filling with school stuff and things,

Toothpaste and brushes, washcloths, and rings,

Dolls and small stuffies to warm up their hearts

Cups and small bowls and things to take apart.

Small toys we could use to round the box out

A ball, or a wind-up they’ll love – no doubt!

How about a small book in which they can write

A small etch-a-sketch or little flashlight?

A toy car or two would light up some eyes

Or funny glasses with big nose for a laughing surprise.

A yo yo, a top, or a small coloring book

Will sure make them smile when in your shoebox they look!

Anything else that you think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well.

In the lobby you’ll find it upon the floor

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!!

Cathy Thiem,

Operation Christmas Child,

Relay Center Coordinator

(A big THANK YOU to those of you who HAVE been placing items in the box! It makes my day to find something new tucked inside! THANK YOU!!)
