Principal’s Pen

Happy Valentine’s Day! I hope that this day, created to celebrate our love for others, didn’t pass you by! Just how do we celebrate this day in our country? Here are some facts (from www.statisticbrain.com):

♥ There are 180,000,000 Valentine’s cards exchanged each year.

♥ There are 198,000,000 roses produced for Valentine’s Day.

♥ 85% of the cards are bought by women.

♥ 73% of the flowers are bought by men.

Whether you bought flowers, or cards, cooked a special meal, went out for dinner, or did something else, I hope you were able to share your love for those God has made close to you. Even though we should let them know every day, it’s nice to have a day set aside to focus on sharing our love with those close to us. God, also wants to share His love for you! The most significant way that He did that is by sending His Son Jesus to live a perfect life, to die on the cross in our place, and to rise again, giving us the victory over our sin. If God sent us a valentine, here is what I think it would say:

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ, promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills, and encourages academic excellence.

Congratulations to sixth grader Brett Christian, St. John’s representative in the Noble County Spelling Bee, which was held last week! Brett won 2nd place and is the runner-up for the Regional Spelling Bee. We praise God for the abilities He has given to Brett and for the way he represented our school!

Spring Fundraiser IN FULL SWING!

We hope to get everyone excited about our frozen food fundraiser to raise needed funds for the work of our Parent-Teacher League.

The sale began last Thursday, February 11, and will run for two weeks. The sale will be on a PREPAY basis. Items will be delivered on Wednesday, March 23. The sale is conducted on a voluntary basis. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!

Science Fair Projects Due!

The hard work is done and the Science Fair projects are due on Tuesday, February 16 and will be judged on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. The results will be shared on Friday. The projects will be displayed to the public on the night of our Showcase on March 11. We look forward to seeing the great projects and celebrating the hard work of our students!

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Please mark March 3 & 4, on your calendar for Parent-Teacher Conferences. We’d like every family to participate as we seek to make the rest of the school year as beneficial to students as possible. As we did in the fall, school will dismiss at 1:55 (bus riders can wait until 2:45 to catch their buses) and conferences will be held from 2:15-7:00. Conferences have been scheduled and notifications of times are being sent home with students today. If changes need to be made, please contact the teacher directly.

2015 Tax Deduction Information

Parents, as you fill out your 2015 Tax Return, you should be aware that you may be eligible for a $1,000 tax deduction per dependent child that is enrolled in a nonpublic school such as St. John. Your tuition payments would qualify you for this deduction. In order to claim this deduction, you need to know that St. John’s school code is C985. The deduction code is 626. If you have questions, please check with your tax preparer or your tax preparation software.

St. John Showcase 2016!!

We’re gearing up for St. John Showcase 2016!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 11th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities!

St. John Showcase 2016 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. All entries must be screened by Ms. Dencklau to be sure they are appropriate and polished. Please contact Ms. Dencklau with any questions. The deadline to return entry forms is Friday, February 19.

Where will you be on Friday evening, May 6? At the St. John Spring Auction! Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Invitations have been mailed, but if you didn’t get one you are still welcome! Just call the school office to RSVP! Please also be thinking of whom you would like to ask to join you. This fun evening includes an excellent dinner, awesome silent auction items, and a lively live auction, all held in the beautiful surroundings of Sylvan Cellars Event Center in Rome City.

The auction is a major fundraiser for our school. It requires a great deal of work to make it a success. This year’s auction committee is chaired by Jo Knox. Summer Moser, Sarah Burtch, Michelle Bailey, Staci Owen, and Lisa Swogger have all been helping in various ways. There is room for you to help as well! Contact Jo or the school office to find out what is needed and how that will match up with your interests and available time.

Registration Timeline

Enrollment for the 2016-2017 school year for both our returning parents and for new parents is now open. You can place your child on our list by returning the “Intent to Re-enroll Form”. We are making a transition to an online registration system and when that is ready we will send out directions on how to complete your registration online. Until then, here are the important dates to keep in mind:

March 1 Class lists are set based on students who have enrolled – so be sure

to notify us of your intent to re-enroll by then!

March 31 Last day to turn in paperwork and $40 per student registration fee

April 1 Registration fee increases to $80 per student

April 20 Deadline to submit application to FACTS for tuition assistance

April 27 Open House from 3:30-7:00 (invite your friends and neighbors)

May 11 Preschool & Kindergarten Round Up from 6:00-7:00 (invite your

friends and neighbors)

Scholastic Book Fair

St. John will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair from Sunday, Feb. 21 through Sunday, February 28. Plan now to visit the Book Fair and find some great new reading material for your kids, and maybe even for yourself!

Parents of 8th Graders!!

An informational meeting for all parents of 8th graders planning to enroll in East Noble High School for next year has been set for Wednesday, Feb. 17, at 6:30 in the Cole Auditorium. A separate letter with a few more details went home with your child.

Arrival/Dismissal Update

As we continue to settle into our new arrival and dismissal procedures, we’d like to share a couple of reminders. We understand that there is a back-up onto Rush Street at times and we want to address that. Please share other questions, concerns, or ideas you have.

• If you are dropping off a child in the morning, please pull forward as far as you can, all the way up to the Worship Center.

• If there are cars along the building leading up to door 5, you can pull past them in the alley and then pull to the side after door 5.

• Please say your good-byes and encourage your kids to exit the car quickly so that you can pull out and the next car can pull in.

Again, thank you for working with us on these changes to help improve the safety within our building, and please continue to share your feedback on these new procedures!

We have a good supply of bumper stickers advertising our school and would like to distribute them to interested parents. If you would like to show your support of our school in this way, please contact Mrs. Thiem for your free sticker!

School Skating Party

Help celebrate the end of the 2nd Trimester at our school skating party on SATURDAY, MARCH 5, from 4:30 – 6:30 at the Skatin’ Station in Auburn. Mark your calendars now so you don’t miss the fun!

The LEGO Team Returns!

We are nearing the time for our Spring Lego Team to begin meeting again. The purpose of the spring season is training and building skills and not preparing for competition. For this reason, the spring season is open to all 3rd-8th graders. Remember, the LEGO Team is about much more than playing with LEGOs. It’s about teamwork, problem solving, completing missions, research, and programming the robots. Practices will be on Fridays, from 3:00-4:15, starting Feb. 19. If you are interested, please return the permission slip already sent home, get another one from the office, see Mr. Walz, or contact coach Jenna Anderson.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Alan Jimenez, Hunter Bolen, Dallas Dean, Katelyn James, Isaac Bennett, Anna Conrad, Lexy Kammerer, and Ian Malone.

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Woodworking, Anyone?

Do you love making things out of wood? We are looking for someone to make a new sign that looks primitive for our Apple Festival booth. Expenses would be paid – just looking for someone with a bit of know-how! See Vernie Scheiber, or leave your name in the office and he can contact you with the details! THANK YOU!!

Kroger Proceeds Received

THANKS TO ALL THOSE WHO HAVE REGISTERED THEIR KROGER CARD! We just received a check in the amount of $1,033.32! If you have not yet registered your card, call Cathy or Chery in the office to see how you can get on board! It’s easy and helps our church raise funds!

Ask Mrs. Thiem for your “Kids fly free” card for kids ages 8 to 17 to take a free plane ride. Details on the card!

Thank you very much for the wonderful response to our request for bottle caps to recycle into benches in memory of Beth Sexton for our playground! We have enough for two benches now, so we are no longer a drop-off site for the caps. Max Platt Ford is a drop-off site – so caps could be taken there.

2016 – 2017 School Calendar Coming Home

Our School Board approved our school’s calendar for the upcoming year at last week’s Board meeting. A bright blue copy is being sent home today with the youngest child in your family.
