St. John Lutheran School

December 14, 2015 - Number 17

The Principal’s Pen

We have been blessed with the

greatest Christmas gift of all:

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given,

and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6

God, in His great love for us has given us the gift

of His Son, Jesus. His birth is the reason we

celebrate this Christmas.

The entire faculty and staff of St. John wishes you

and your family a blessed Christmas. May you enjoy a safe

Christmas Break and God’s richest blessings in the New Year!

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

As a part of the spiritual formation we provide children, our students are preparing to help lead worship during the Advent season! Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas. Grades Preschool through 2 will lead the worship service this Thursday, Dec. 17. The service begins at 7:00 in our church sanctuary. We hope that your family will plan now to join us!

SOL Presents “Waiting for Jesus”

St. John’s youth ministry, the School of Life, will be hosting “Waiting for Jesus,” a interactive Nativity on December 19. “Waiting for Jesus” is a guided tour inspired by Live Nativities and given its own flair by SOL. Tours run continuously between 4 - 7 pm, so save the date and plan to experience the birth of Jesus in a new and fresh way!

Christmas at Bixler Lake

Don’t miss the opportunity to see our student’s work displayed on large wooden boards at Bixler Lake. Students in grades PS-8 painted Christmas greetings to be displayed along with boards from other local school children. The displays will be lit each evening from 6-9 p.m. Other activities will be available during those times as well.

Shop With SCRIP for Christmas!

Christmas is right around the corner and if you want a special order gift card, the time to think about that is NOW! Cards sell quickly this time of year, so please don’t wait too long and be disappointed if we are out of stock on an item you wanted. Only one more order will be placed before Christmas TODAY - Monday, December 14. After that, no guarantees are made that we will have what you want.

Don’t forget about our “generic” scrip – a certificate you can purchase as a gift which can be redeemed for anything we carry. What a great gift!

Using Scrip doesn't always mean giving a gift card! You can redeem the scrip yourself to purchase gifts. Make Scrip your first stop before you shop and save money on your tuition or other school expenses. Still not sure how Scrip works? Ask in the office! Don't miss out on the opportunity to save--it's never too late to get on board!

Our final day before Christmas is

Friday, December 18

School reconvenes Monday, January 4th.

Traffic Changes

With our construction project winding down, we are ready to introduce some changes to our arrival and dismissal procedures. These changes are ones that we believe will improve the security of our building and the safety of our children. As with any change, there will be a transition period. We hope that all of our parents and students will be able to quickly adjust to these changes when they begin after Christmas Break on January 4. A notice went home last week and is coming home again today. Please ask if you have questions! We’ll send out a reminder call on Sunday, Jan. 3, in the afternoon.

Inclement Weather

As the likelihood of inclement weather increases, a few reminders about the procedure for school closings are in order. St. John will follow the East Noble School Corporation. When their decision is made you will be notified through a SchoolMessenger call and the following media outlets: WPTA, WISE, WANE, WBCL, WAWK, and WLAB (STAR). You will see or hear St. John Lutheran, Kendallville, listed on all these media outlets. The option exists for school to be closed, on 2-hour delay, or on 3-hour delay, which pushes dismissal time back to 3:45. Parents must always use discretion, whether we are in session or on delay, to determine if their own drive to school is too hazardous and they need to wait before coming in to school.

I think this can be taken out for a while. With 3 days still built in we don’t have to worry about this just yet.

eLearning

After last spring’s trial run, we believe that we are able to utilize eLearning effectively as one of our options for making up days lost for bad weather. We do not have plans to implement an eLearning day on the day that school is called off. However, we will utilize an eLearning Saturday soon after the missed days. Assignments will be posted on our eLearning wiki (http://sjkelearning.pbworks.com/w/page/93697442/St%20John%20Lutheran%20School) by 9:00 A.M. on Saturday morning. The school will be open and staffed from 9:00-12:00 on Saturday morning for students who need Internet access and/or assistance. Students will also be able to stay after school the following week on Monday and Tuesday until 4:00 for the same reasons. Teachers will also be available during these times for students to contact them with questions. All work will be due Wednesday morning when school starts. The teachers will teach students how to access and navigate the wiki and will provide some work in paper form. It will be important for parents to communicate with us the issues they face so that we can continue to refine this process as needed.

Our school calendar still has 3 built-in snow days. So, the first 3 days missed will not need to be made up!

Buttons For Sale

Kathy Stawser, grandmother to several of our students, has offered to make and sell buttons, magnets, and keychains with St. John logos. She has eagles, our “Building His Kingdom Here” theme, sports, and our new St. John logo! She had a table set up at Little Saints Night for those who were present. An order form is coming home for others who are interested. Mrs. Strawser is donating half of what she makes back to St. John. Thank you!

Join us for the Drum Song Collection this Winter!

You'll learn twenty-five beloved Music Together songs and activities you can recreate at home. Your children will be delighted to hop or bounce along to "John the Rabbit," play a musical version of hide-and-seek to "Sneak and Peek," and act the part of a slow snail and quick mouse in "Snail and Mouse." In addition to imaginative and engaging weekly classes, your tuition includes materials for you to use at home, online access to the curriculum and support materials through the new Music Together app, and a family newsletter full of resources and music-making ideas.
