St. John Lutheran School

November 9, 2015 Number 12

The Principal’s Pen

I was blessed to be able to attend the Rend Collective and Chris Tomlin concert last Thursday night, along with around 40 others of the St. John family! What an uplifting, worshipful experience! There are few things like being in a room with thousands of other people singing praises to God! If you ever have the chance to attend a Christian concert, I would strongly encourage you to do it.

Every song sung by either artist encouraged my faith in some way and there is definitely not enough room here to share about every song. One of Rend Collective’s songs (that you can also hear on the radio now) is You Will Never Run. The song is a powerful reminder that God will never leave me (check out Deuteronomy 31:6). The words of the chorus are:

You will never run away, You’re forever mine,

You will never run away, You’re by my side.

You will never run away, You forever shine,

You will never run away, You’re by my side.

What a simple, yet powerful message! God is never going to run away from me. No matter how bad I am. No matter how I hurt others. No matter who I let down. No matter what I’ve done, or haven’t done. No matter my sin. No matter my shame. No matter my disgrace. Because of Jesus’ death on the cross, God does not see any of this. There is nothing that I can ever do that will separate me from God (check out Romans 8:35). God’s love is bigger. God’s grace is bigger. God’s forgiveness is bigger. God’s face shines on me. He never leaves me. He never forsakes me. He’s by my side. And that, my friends, is a good place to be!

You will never run away, You’re by my side!!

Junior Spell Bowl!!

Congratulations to St. John’s Junior Spell Bowl team, who competed in the regional Spell Bowl at East Noble Middle School last Tuesday. The team scored 43 points, which earned them 1st place in their division and 1st place overall. In addition, that score was good enough to qualify the team to participate in the State Spell Bowl Finals at Purdue University on Nov. 14! Way to go St. John Spellers! Congratulations, Spellers! Special thanks to Mrs. Pillers, our faithful Spell Bowl coach.

Team members were: Joseph Erne, Hanne Brandgard, Gavin Burtch, Marcy Treesh, Caleb Walz, Joshua Walz, Haley Bloom, Andrew Schroeder, and Emma Schroeder.

Congratulations Junior Spell Bowl team members!!!

We are proud of you!!

Construction Update

Our construction continues to proceed toward completion. Thank you teachers, students, and parents for your patience with the inconveniences we have experienced! Although it will still be a couple months until things are fully completed, we have scheduled a CORNERSTONE LAYING ceremony and all school families are welcomed to join us. We will gather THIS Sunday, Nov. 15, at 10:30 in the back parking lot near the new Worship Center entrance to lay the new cornerstone. Everyone present will then be invited to join us inside for the usual 10:30 contemporary service.

Butter Braid Delivery Monday, NOVEMBER 23!

A big thank you to everyone who sold those delicious Butter Braid bread loaves during this fall’s fundraiser! Orders will be delivered MONDAY, NOVEMBER 23RD. Please mark this date on your calendar now and plan to pick up your child’s order. It is imperative parents are prompt on pick-up day as freezer space is not available to store orders not picked up. Orders should be available from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

PLEASE DO NOT EXPECT YOUR STUDENT TO TRANSPORT THE BRAIDS IF HE OR SHE IS A BUS RIDER!!

WE COULD USE A COUPLE HELPERS FOR DELIVERY DAY! TALK WITH MRS. THIEM.

Kendallville Christmas Parade

On Dec. 5th 2015 St. John Lutheran will be walking in the Christmas Parade down Main street. I am looking for volunteers to walk and show their support for our wonderful church and school. We will be having some students dress up as Bible Characters. We would like volunteers of all ages to participate. We will meet at North Side Elementary school at 12:00 to get lined up. We also need donations of bags of candy to pass out to people. We want our presence felt in our community. If you are interested in helping with candy or walking in the parade please rsvp to Angi Goldey 260-760-8501 or email at agoldey@stjohneagles.org

These school families, prayed for this week:

John & Doneva Kitchen, Klint & Melissa Kammerer, Shawn & Chasity Kilburn, and Ron & Stephanie Kline

Cameron Patton, father of three St. John students, diagnosed with colon cancer;

George Berger, father of Mrs. Linda Atz, recovering from a stroke

Thank You, Kroger Customers!

Once again we have received a nice check from Kroger which represents a percentage of sales from pre-registered Kroger shoppers. The check, in the amount of $1,280.87, will be placed in our building fund. If you have yet to link your Kroger card to St. John, please consider doing so and our school will benefit each time you shop! See Mrs. Thiem if you need instructions on how to go about it. It is very simple!

Buttons For Sale

Kathy Stawser, grandmother to several of our students, has offered to make and sell buttons, magnets, and keychains with St. John logos. She has eagles, our ‘Building His Kingdom Here” theme, sports, and our new St. John logo! She had a table set up at Little Saints Night for those who were present. An order form is coming home for others who are interested. Mrs. Strawser is donating half of what she makes back to St. John. Thank you!

Pastries with Parents

Please set aside some time on Friday, Nov. 20, from 7:00-7:45, to join us for some morning treats. Scheduled for the week before Thanksgiving, the teachers are hosting this event as a way of saying thank you to our families for being here at St. John. We look forward to hosting you and giving you the opportunity to have a special treat with your children at school that morning.

First Trimester Ends

Last Friday marked the end of the first trimester. Look for report cards to be sent home next Monday, November 16.

INK CARTRIDGE COLLECTION

Do you work in a place that would allow you to put a box in a prominent place to collect used printer cartridges? If so, we’d appreciate your help in doing so! Mrs. Goldey is in charge of the collection here at St. John and her students benefit! Thanks for your help in keeping a bit of trash out of our landfill and helping our school earn money as well! See Mrs. Goldey if you have any questions! THANK YOU!!

School Pictures – Make-Up Day

Our School Pictures have been sent home with students. A make-up day has been scheduled for Thursday, November 19th, beginning at 8:30 a.m., for our 3-year-old Preschool class, students who were absent on the original Picture Day, as well as those who were not satisfied with their original portraits. Please remember that the entire package must be returned if your child is to be re-photographed.

To qualify for retakes, a student must return the original photos along with the form included with the packet stating the reason the photos are unsatisfactory so the photographer can attempt to improve the results on the second attempt. Photos will not be retaken simply because you do not like the clothes the child was wearing, or a different hair style is desired.

Class composite pictures will be printed after make-up day, and will be sent home as soon as we receive them back from the lab.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Gabby Stier, Brock Cheesman, and Brayden Koehl. We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Thanksgiving Break Just Ahead

Just a reminder that St. John will not be in session November 25-27 to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Women of St. John Winter Festival

Saturday, November 21 - 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Plan to attend the annual Festival organized by the women of our congregation. There will be lots of gently-used toys, crafts, a giant white elephant table, baked goods, and a delicious luncheon. The Women of St. John purchase the Bibles for our fourth graders each year, and have done a myriad of other things to improve our facilities here at St. John, so your support of their event is very much appreciated!

Christmas Gift Collection

While the holidays can be an especially joyous time for most of us, it can be a time of sadness for a child of a needy family. To help in this cause, we will be taking a gift collection to be given to needy children of our school and congregation. This is strictly a voluntary donation.

Just after Thanksgiving, we will place ornaments on a Christmas tree in our school. Each ornament will have written on it either the name of a specific toy or a suggested type of gift certificate for clothing which would be enjoyed by one of our families. (We have switched to gift certificates for clothing rather than the purchase of actual clothing.)

If the item to be purchased is a toy, purchase the toy, wrap the gift, then tape the ornament on the front of the package. If you choose to purchase a gift certificate, simply place the certificate inside the envelope you take from the tree and return it to the school office. We will see that it gets to the family for whom it was intended.

It’s impossible for us to truly know the needs of all of our families. We have contacted various families that we think could use some special help this Christmas. If you were not contacted, and need help, please speak with Mr. Walz.

We feel this is a great opportunity to teach the children that the true joy of Christmas is in the spirit of giving, and it will also bring joy and Christ’s love to those with whom we are sharing.

THINK SCRIP FOR YOUR CHRISTMAS SHOPPING AND GIFT GIVING

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON!!

PLEASE PLACE YOUR ORDERS EARLY

SO YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT!

CHRISTMAS WILL SOON BE UPON US!!

As a part of the spiritual formation we provide children, our students are preparing to help lead worship during the Advent season! Advent is a time of preparation for Christmas. Grades 3 through 5 will lead the worship on Thursday, Dec. 3. Grades 6 through 8 will lead the worship service on Thursday, Dec. 10. Grades Preschool through 2 will lead the worship service on Thursday, Dec. 17. Our youth group, grades 6 through 12, will lead a special service tentatively scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 19. All services begin at 7:00. More details will be coming home in the weeks ahead. We hope that your family will plan now to join us for these special services.

Operation Christmas Child

Please consider putting together a shoebox full of toys and school supplies for a needy child in another part of the world! This is a great way for you to teach your child the joy of giving! Don't forget to include a letter and even a picture if you'd like. All boxes should be delivered to the school office no later than 9:00 a.m. on Monday, November 23rd. Unfortunately, any boxes delivered after that time will NOT be delivered as we have a strict deadline to meet. The child receiving your gift will be blessed with toys, but more importantly shown the love of Jesus through you!

Once again, St. John will serve as a Relay Collection Center for National Collection Week – the third week of November. If you would be willing to spend a few hours helping to collect boxes as they arrive and package them in shipping cartons, give Mrs. Thiem a call (347-2444).

Empty shoeboxes are now available for the asking in the office. Students in selected grades may use this program as their classroom Christmas project in lieu of a gift exchange between students. Stay tuned for instructions from your child’s teacher. Want an easy way to help? Money is needed for shipping! $7.00 per box – any amount will be accepted and will help send our boxes on their journey into the arms of a desperate child!

This is the month – it is finally here!

Operation Christmas Child Collection Week is near!

November 16 to 23, I’ll be manning the post

The rush time is here – it’s no time to coast!

Again, we need money for the shipping fee

Everyone knows those costs are not free.

Seven dollars for each box is asked and that’s not a lot

Considering distance, it’s really a small dot!

So send in your money, your check or your dollar

If you need me to come with a truck – just give a holler!

It’s been fun each month, well…it has been for me.

To find what, for shoeboxes, in the box that you leave.

I’m sorry if my poems make you cringe – just remember….

I’m taking time off – no poem in December!!!
