The Principal’s Pen


Whether you are young or old, your kids little or grown, at home or on their own, nearby or far away, being a mom is something to be celebrated!

I asked a number of students what was special about their mom, what was unique, and why they loved her. Here are their answers:

I love my mom because she …. is awesome, gave birth to me, is funny, likes to play games with our family, gets me things, gives me good night kisses, let me have a dog, helps me do stuff I can’t do myself, is really nice, got me a puppy, is cool, spoils me, has everything I need, gets me whatever I want, loves me, cooks for me, she is inspiring, makes me cry and laugh, is helpful, gives me comfort, helps me, takes me wherever I go, helps me with my homework, doesn’t stay mad at me, cares for me, is really nice, helps me when I’m sad, takes care of us, and all of the above!

Moms, you are loved and are a blessing to your children! Who you are, what you do, and how you do it, make a difference in the lives of your kids, even if they don’t always tell you. Happy Mother’s Day, and may God bless you in this ever-important job!

Spring Auction!

Last Friday night’s School Auction was certainly one of the highlights of this school year. It was an evening filled with delicious food, enjoyable fellowship, and the opportunity to view and bid on a huge assortment of items from generous individuals and businesses in our community.

This wonderful night could not have happened without the hard work of the auction committee: Jenna Anderson, Megan Stites, Summer Moser, Jo Knox, and Terra Ditton. They spent countless hours of work over many months all for the sake of our school and our children. Special thanks to Nate and Rachel Schermerhorn for introducing us all to their beautiful facility, Sylvan Cellars. Thanks also to Jerry Ehle of Schrader Auction who donated his services as auctioneer and did a fantastic job in getting everyone excited to bid! Thanks to everyone else who donated items for the class projects and other auction items and chipped in to help in any other way! Praise be to God!

The auction was certainly a financial success. We will have final figures to report soon. We praise God for the tremendous support of so many people and for the blessing it will be for our students.

For the past 12 weeks the 5th grade class has been engaged in the KidsFit program. Revolving around the Indy 500 and promoting cardiorespiratory fitness this program combined educational running information with fun race car terminology. While the entire class completed 12 miles during P.E. class, three students and their families made the early morning trek to Indianapolis to complete the mini marathon with over 450 other runners. Congratulations to the 5th grade class and especially to Coby Treesh, Bailey Murphy and Owen Chambers for completing the mini marathon. Job well done!

Mr. Scheiber and Mrs. Pillers are looking for a few adults who would like to go on the Creation Museum trip – not as a chaperone, but simply to help share in the cost of the charter bus rental. You would be on your own at the museum. Cost is $75. Date is Thursday, May 28. See one of those teachers if you are interested in going!


After months and months of praying and planning the time to begin the Building Project is almost upon us! Our St. John leadership teams have determined that May 24th will be the last worship service in our current Worship Center. Soon after that, furnishings will begin to be removed and remodeling will begin. (Some school activities will be held in the Worship Center after that last worship service.) In conjunction with that final service a Groundbreaking ceremony will be a part of our worship activities. On the 24th come to church prepared to join a procession to the adjacent property east of the Worship Center to participate in a joyous Groundbreaking ceremony!

During construction, contemporary worship services will be held at 10:30am on Sunday mornings in the Sanctuary.

Exciting things are happening at St. John…keep those prayers ascending!

And now a few words from our Building Project Manager, Kevin Wengert…..

Many building products such as flowers and landscaping, lights, ceiling tile and grid, doors, and carpet will be available starting on May 23rd. We ask a free-will donation to the building program for any items taken by members. Contact Kevin at 318-0243.

The Building Committee is thinking about having an industrial garage sale on Saturday, July 11th, if support is received. This will not happen if volunteers don’t come forth to lead this effort.

Items for sale could include building products from our job, stored desks, tables, chairs, working mowers and garden equipment, garden tools, wood-working tools, grills, sports equipment, fishing/hunting items or any cool “man items’”.

We would like to grill hamburgers and hot dogs, and have salads, and drinks for sale as well. We might also think about a regular garage sale to correspond to this event with all proceeds for the building project. Contact Kevin!! 318-0243

New Teacher Update

Our School Board spent last Wednesday night interviewing 4 qualified candidates: Tricia Day, Michele Gerst, Alexandra Klaehn, and Justin Tayon. Each of these teachers would do a great job for us and bring new and exciting gifts to our school. The School Board is now prayerfully reviewing each candidate and should reach a decision at its regular meeting on Tuesday. Please watch for further communication regarding this important decision and please keep the process in your prayers.

In case you didn’t hear, we did announce that our new teacher will be teaching 4th grade as Mrs. Schroeder will be moving to 3rd grade. We are thankful for what Mrs. Schroeder will bring to 3rd grade, and that she can be a ready mentor for our new 4th grade teacher!

Accreditation Survey Coming

As we begin our accreditation process for next year we would like to gather some data from parents, teachers, and students. The whole purpose of this process is to identify what we are doing well and what areas we can improve in. An important part of this process is getting valuable feedback from different groups. This survey information is very valuable in helping to shape our future direction. Watch next week for the details of how you can complete a survey. If you are interested in helping with the accreditation process (many helpers are needed!), or would just like more information, please contact Mr. Walz.

Awesome Teachers!

Our final eLearning day began last Saturday, May 9. If students need computer access or extra help they are welcome to stay after school until 4:15 on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. All work is to be done and turned in by Friday, May 15. Please encourage and support your child in completing this work as early as possible and not leaving it until the end of the week.

Preschool/Kindergarten Round-Up

This Wednesday, May 13, is our Preschool/Kindergarten Round-Up. The purpose of this night is to provide specific information for parents at these two grade levels. The night begins at 6:00 and will end at 7:00. This event is for current students moving into these grades. The event is also for prospective parents, so be sure to invite your friends and neighbors.

Athletics News

As we start to look toward the end of the year, some changes will be happening with our Athletic Program. For the first time ever there will be an Athletic Banquet to celebrate the hard work our athletes have put in this year. If you would like to give some input to assist this celebration, contact Athletic Director Melissa Monn via FastDirect or email mmonn@stjohneagles.org.

The next and probably biggest change, is that students will need to "register" whether they are planning to participate in a sport this spring, instead of the usual August sign-ups. This will help with the fall sports program, and allow us to get practice and game schedules set up this summer. Below you will find a link to a website where the sign-up form can be found. ISTEP Testing Window Has Arrived

ISTEP testing will come to a close this week, probably on Thursday morning. Our technology has worked well in almost every case and our students have persevered through very hard and tedious tests. Please watch for a letter next week from Mr. Walz giving more details on the test structures and our experiences with the test. Please encourage your child to do his or her best in completing these tests.

As the year nears completion, there are many special events tat take place. We hope you will mark your calendars and plan to join us for some or all of the following events to close down this school year.

SHINE Students of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as SHINE Students last week: Journey Speakman, Hayley Bloom, Lex Moser, Addison Hampshire, Isaac Blaskie, Morgan Ditton, Allyson Walkup, Tyler Owen, and Nathan Potts.

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Voucher Students

Parents of voucher students need to come in to the office to complete your application for next year. The process takes about 10 minutes with Mrs. Thiem. You will need a copy of your 2014 tax return (unless you receive other forms of public assistance. If so, we can access what we need from that) and you will need to know which sports and music program your child wants to participate.

Logo Contest

By the end of March we had received 20 entries for our new school logo contest. Thank you for all of the great ideas submitted! The teachers have reviewed these entries and have determined 4 ‘winners’. Their entries have been given to a graphic artist to use in creating a school logo for us. These four entries were submitted by: April and Luke Hodge, Matt Potts, Emily Speakman, and Caleb Walz. We hope to have the new logo completed by the end of this school year!

Our re-enrollment and new registration season is well underway. We currently have 149 students, both returning and new, signed up for next year. Official class lists have been made. If you are planning to return for next year please turn in your 2015-2016 Application right away. The registration fee has now increased from $40 per student to $80.

If you know of other families that might be interested in coming to St. John, please have them contact the school office. Or, you could pick up a packet and give it to them. We find that referrals from current families are often the most successful marketing that we do. We also find that families that visit are able to see more clearly how our school is different. Please let interested families know about our final Open House:

Welcome letters for each family, which include your financial obligations for the next school year, have been sent home. When you receive this you will need to indicate your preferred payment method and sign and return the form. Of course, if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please keep in mind that St. John has several avenues to work with families in need of financial assistance. In addition to our own Endowment Scholarships we also have the state SGO Scholarships and the Indiana Choice Scholarships (vouchers). FACTS applications for tuition assistance can be completed online at www.factstuitionaid.com. These applications should be completed and tax documents uploaded by April 20. If you have financial needs please talk with Mr. Walz so that we can help provide for your children’s Christian education. We will do our best to not let finances stand in the way of your child’s Christian education!

Preschool/Kindergarten Spring Program

Please join us on Thursday, May 21, for our Preschool and Kindergarten Spring Program. You will enjoy praise and music and lots of smiling faces! The program will begin at 6:30 in the Worship Center. Students, families, and friends are all welcome to attend.


Remember that we have a Suggestion/Question box in the lobby area (with the soup label, Box Tops, pop tab and ink cartridge drop off boxes). Your feedback is welcome!

Final Days of School

The final day of school for preschool 4-year old classes (both AM and PM) is Wednesday, June 3. The final day for the preschool 3-year old class will be Thursday, June 4. Please continue to watch the Banner and your classroom newsletters for end of the year field trips and events.

‘Tis May, the month of blooming things

Of budding trees, the bird that sings.

Our lawns will brighten with colorful cheer

A pretty washcloth, a ball, or flashlight.

Send it in with a hope and a prayer

That some child will love it ----- somewhere.

The world that they live in is foreign to us

Anything we send them, they will make a fuss!

The smiles on their faces as they open with joy,

Their shoeboxes filled with our love and a toy.

Anything else that you think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well.

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!!

VBS week is July 20-24!

At “Camp Discovery” VBS, we’ll learn that Jesus works in and through us! We will look into the Bible, and explore five "tree-mendous" Bible accounts!

Registration is now open for children in preschool (at least age 3 by July) through entering 6th grade who will

attend VBS July 20th – 24th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. each night. Come along with us as we sing fun songs, do camping themed crafts, eat yummy snacks, and more! We have received word that we will be receiving nearly $1600 from purchases made in the first three months of this year from only 58 people who have registered their Kroger card with the Community Rewards program! Music Survey

This week your child (1st-7th grade) received a survey asking for input on what music class you plan to have your child in next year. We know that many of you will continue with the class you are in this year, but some may be interested in making a change. Your response on the survey will not lock you in to that class for next year, but it will help us in making the necessary plans and scheduling decisions that we need to make. Please watch for the survey and return it when it promptly.

The Summerbook order has now been placed. If you would still like to order, you must do that on your own and pay all applicable shipping charges. All the students who participate in this summer program will be able to participate in the special recognition party once school begins in the fall.

Thank you to everyone who helped support our 5th/6th grade trip to Chicago. The 5th and 6th graders worked hard last Saturday and washed around 50 cars and each other! They raised nearly $600 for their trip.
