Number 5

The Principal’s Pen

Who is Generation Y (and iY)? Basically, it’s anyone born from 1984 to 2002.

What are kids and young adults of this generation like? Here are just a few adjectives that describe this generation:

Overwhelmed – this generation often reports being stressed out over school, family, work, and the future. How can we help them manage this stress in healthy ways?

Overconnected – this generation is connected to the world and has access to information virtually 24/7. How came we help them balance life in the real world with life in the virtual world?

Overprotected – this generation often misses out on important developmental experiences due to fears of the outside world. How do we help them balance the need for safety with the need for calculated risk?

Overserved – this generation, for the first time ever, has been bombarded with messages of how important they are (just think of all the media dollars aimed at children and young adults). How do we help them know their value and know that the world doesn’t revolve around them?

Does that sound like anyone you know? Of course, not all of these characteristics apply to everyone in this generation; and, some of these characteristics apply to people in other generations. But, these are realities that we should take note of. If you would like to learn more about the iY generation and how to lead them toward a healthy future, please take advantage of one of the following two opportunities:

Sunday mornings, 9:15-10:15, starting Oct. 19, for 6 weeks

Sunday afternoons, 2:00-4:00, starting Oct. 26, for 3 sessions

Paper Banners Coming To an End

Starting next Monday, Sep. 15, we will no longer send paper copies of the Banner home with every family. The Banner can be accessed on our website: www.stjohneagles.org and will be sent attached to a Fast Direct message each Monday. If you would still like to receive a paper copy of the Banner please let the office know and we will gladly send a copy home with your child.

Building Program Information Sessions

St. John has been working toward a building program to address the need for a classroom when we lose the portable in June of 2015. But, we would also like to provide for some additional needs. Please join us for either one of two informational sessions to learn more about our goals for this project. Sessions will be offered on Sunday, Sep. 14, at 11:30 in the Worship Center or Monday, Sep. 15, at 7:00 in the Worship Center. Please make every effort to attend!

Children Sing at St. John

All St. John students are invited to participate in one worship service on Sunday, Sep. 14, at 10:00. We will be singing near the beginning of the service. Students may sit with their family and come forward to sing, or may meet Mr. Buuck in the gym by 9:45 if they are not able to stay for the whole service. Parents are then encouraged to stay for the first of two building program informational sessions after the service at 11:30. A separate note with all the details was sent home last Thursday.

Please remember in prayer…

Joshua Jank, whose health is in God’s hands,

and for the whole Jank family.

These school families, prayed for this week:

Sarah Burtch, Audrey Butler, Aimee Campbell and Jeff Campbell, Tisha Campbell, and Lisa Chambers

The biggest fundraiser of the year for our Parent-Teacher League is Kendallville’s Apple Festival. It takes many helping hands to make this project a success. Sixteen people are needed for each shift at the Fairgrounds!

A big thank you to all of you who have signed up already to work at this year’s Apple Festival! However, lots of help is still needed!!! If you are unsure what volunteering would entail, please speak with Mrs. Thiem. WE EXPECT ALL ST. JOHN FAMILIES TO BE INVOLVED WITH THE FESTIVAL! IT TAKES US ALL TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK! PLEASE DECIDE HOW YOU CAN HELP. IF YOU HAVE YET TO RESPOND, AN ADDITIONAL FORM IS BEING SENT YOUR WAY. PLEASE RESPOND! WE NEED EVERYONE!

Lots of coolers will be needed to store apples and eggs for the Festival. If you would allow us to borrow yours, plan on dropping the cooler off at school on Wednesday, October 1. THANKS!!

Also needed are cash donations to be

used to purchase fritter ingredients.

Send your donation to the school office

if you would like to help.

Worship with Us!

Everyone is always encouraged and welcome to join us for any of the three weekly worship services offered at St. John. They are:

Thursday 7:00 p.m. Sanctuary – formal or blended service

Sunday 8:00 Sanctuary – formal or blended service

Sunday 10:30 a.m. Worship Center – contemporary service

SCRIP can save you money! Please stop in the office any time and purchase some SCRIP cards. The percentage that the school receives back from your purchases helps provide for the education of your children. Plus, St. John credits half of that percentage back to the account of your choosing back at St. John. The school wins and you win!

Facts Tuition Management System

We understand that family situations change over the course of the year. If your family’s financial situation changes and you need to adjust your FACTS agreement please let the office know. We can easily arrange for you to make an advance payment or to adjust your payment plan. Please notify us 10 days prior to your payment date in order to process the change.

HomeConnect, is a part of our Accelerated Reader program and a terrific way for you to stay connected to the AR books your kids are reading. Through HomeConnect, you are able to see all the AR books that your child is reading and how he or she has done on the AR quizzes. In fact, you can even set it up to receive an email after every AR quiz. Your child will receive a letter explaining how you can sign up for this service. If you have any questions, please be sure to ask your child’s teacher or Mr. Walz.

St. John Spring Auction

Yes, you read that right! Work is already beginning for our Spring Auction, which will be held on Friday, May 8, at the new Sylvan Cellars Event Center (owned by Nathan and Rachel Schermerhorn). We’re excited to bring our school auction to this beautiful new venue. Our auction team is meeting on Wednesday, Sep. 17, at 7:00, in the library, to beginning planning. Whether you can help a lot or just a little, please join our team on Sep. 17, or contact Jenna Anderson for more information.

Noble County Promise

Parents of Kindergarten through Third Grade: Did you sign up your child for a 529 College Savings Account at our Open Classroom Night in August? If not, you can still do so until Sep. 15, at the following link:

Don’t forget that you will automatically have $25 deposited into your account when you sign up! Our teachers will be presenting some lessons relating to college and career planning during the month of September. All of this will lead up to the “Walk Into My Future” event at Huntington University on Oct. 1. More details about this event will be coming soon.

Twenty-first Century Scholars

Twenty-first Century Scholars application forms are now available online at www.scholars.in.gov. The website also lists recent legislative changes to the program. Income-eligible students who take a pledge as a seventh or eighth-grader may be eligible for up to four years of paid tuition at an Indiana college following high school graduation.

Grandparents Day

This year, we’ll be celebrating Grandparents Day on Wednesday, September 24. Grandparents or other special guests are invited to spend part of the day with us and enjoy several special activities together with your grandchild or special friend. Save the date, invite your special guests, and watch for more details to come.

Elementary and Junior S-P-E-L-L B-O-W-L Time!

Our Spell Bowl teams are now getting under way!! This year, our elementary team (grades 4-5) will be coached again by Mrs. Barr and Mrs. Schroeder, and our junior team (grades 6-8) will be coached by Mrs. Pillers. Practice sessions are now starting, so if you are interested in joining please be sure to get the information from the coaches.

School Pictures

School pictures have been scheduled for Wednesday, September 17. Parents of 3-year old preschool students that meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays may bring their child to school on the 17th for Picture Day. However, we will schedule our Picture Retake Day for a Tuesday or Thursday and you can have your child’s picture taken that day. This year we will again be using Derby Photography for our class pictures and yearbook services. All students in our school will be pictured during their normal class time. For now, mark Picture Day on your calendar. More details will be coming!

Wendy Kratzman will be helping students that day! Thanks, Wendy!!

SHINE Student

of the Week

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SHINE Student last week: Owen Chambers, Ashton Benson, Delia Norris, Jessie Schroeder, Lucas Diehm, Rhett Norris, Lilly Moser, Branson Klink, Allison Walkup, Morgan Ditton, and Melissa Heileman.

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

Cross Connections Counseling

Life can sometimes get difficult and we need a place to go for help. Mrs. Lessing is available to meet with students individually for counseling sessions. Please contact Mr. Walz if you are interested in learning more about how this opportunity might benefit your child.

Hungry for Hungry Howie’s???

Beginning Tuesday, September 9th, and continuing each SECOND TUESDAY of the month, St. John will be partnering with Hungry Howie’s to raise funds for the seventh and eighth grade Washington D.C. trip in the spring of 2016. Families who place an order anytime throughout the day should mention they would like the sale to be credited to St. John. Once we reach 17 orders, our group earns 10% of ALL sales that have been received throughout the day!

This could potentially be an excellent source of funds for the kids’ trip and all we gotta do is eat pizza! How simple is that? Just place your order and mention St. John! There will also be a pizza party for the classroom which has the most participation, so you can also benefit your child’s classroom! Get your family and friends involved and let’s make this a raving success! THANKS!

Shoebox News!

Are you packing your shoebox? OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD uses simple, gift-filled shoe boxes to let hurting children know they are loved and to share the message of the greatest gift they can ever receive – Jesus Christ.

The collection of these shoeboxes will be upon us before we know it – the week of November 16th. St. John will serve as a regional collection site again this year! What an opportunity God has provided for us to minister to so many children around the globe!

For now, continue to collect new items suitable for a shoebox for a needy child. Most of the children who receive these boxes have never before received a gift, so even the smallest of items to us is such a blessing to them! Mrs. Thiem can provide lots of ideas for you, and brochures about the project will be coming home with your student next month.

I will also be looking for volunteers to help man the drop-off site at designated times the week of November 16th. Please respond favorably!

The last days of summer are coming up fast

Our boxes are filling with love that will last.

Forever these kids, and their families too

Will remember the kindness that came from you.

Our boxes are filling with school stuff and things,

Toothpaste and brushes, washcloths, and rings,

Dolls and small stuffies to warm up their hearts

Cups and small bowls and things to take apart.

Small toys we could use to round the box out

A ball, or a wind-up they’ll love – no doubt!

How about a small book in which they can write

A small etch-a-sketch or little flashlight?

A toy car or two would light up some eyes

Or funny glasses with big nose for a laughing surprise.

A yo yo, a top, or a small coloring book

Will sure make them smile when in your shoebox they look!

Anything else that you think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well.

In the lobby you’ll find it upon the floor

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!!

Cathy Thiem,

Operation Christmas Child,

Relay Center Coordinator

(A big THANK YOU to those of you who HAVE been placing items in the box! It makes my day to find something new tucked inside! THANK YOU!!)
