The Principal’s Pen

“For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them.” Romans 12:3-6

What is the body of Christ? We got a good picture of it last Thursday morning at our Kids Against Hunger packing event. We saw Kindergarten students counting out the finished bags and then flattening them before packing into boxes. We saw 7th and 8th graders making, filling, and sealing the boxes. We saw 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders scooping out rice, soy protein, dried vegetable, and vitamin powder (while standing on milk crates, boxes, and cases of pop in order to be tall enough!). We saw 4th, 5th, and 6th graders weighing the bags and sealing their tops. We saw parents, grandparents, church members, friends, teachers, and staff members working together to supervise and assist the kids. In short, we saw every person using his or her unique talents to serve God as we served others. This is the body of Christ in action!

We packed meals for about two hours and ultimately filled about 2,800 meal pouches. The organizers from Kids Against Hunger were so impressed with our kids and how well they listened, how hard they worked, how hard they made changes at the last minute. The leaders walked away energized for the work they do. I’m so proud of our kids for serving together as members of the body of Christ!

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

Field Day

Our Field Day activities have been moved to the last day of school (June 3) and revamped to celebrate the last day of school with activities and a picnic lunch in the park. So, we won’t have any activities on Thursday, May 15. We will have lots of activities on June 3 and we will certainly need parent help. More specific details will come home soon.

Final Days of School

The final day of school for preschool 4-year old classes (both AM and PM) is Monday, June 2. The final day for the preschool 3-year old classes will be Tuesday, June 3. Please continue to watch the Banner and your classroom newsletters for end of the year field trips and events.

Please pray

School Board Members will be prayed for this week:

Beth Klink, Jeff Lehman, Angie Malone, Kurt Hayden, and Tacy Potts

Joshua Jank, whose health is in God’s hands, and the whole Jank Family

Preschool/Kindergarten Spring Program

Please join us THIS Tuesday, May 13, for our Preschool and Kindergarten Spring Program. You will enjoy praise and music and lots of smiling faces! The program will begin at 6:30 in the Worship Center. Students, families, and friends are all welcome to attend.

Increasing Our Visibility

We believe that St. John offers a great educational experience and that most of the time, our parents and families, feel the same way. We also believe that there are more people in our community that would benefit from what we offer, but don’t know about us. Because of these two beliefs, St. John has entered into a partnership with Next Ad Agency (a company connected to the company that made our video in the fall) to increase our visibility in the community by improving our visibility on the Web. The first step in this process is already visible on our website. Check it out! The second step in this process involves surveying our parents. You will receive a phone call in the next few weeks from a representative of Next Ad Agency. We have been assured that these phone calls are brief. We do not want to intrude unnecessarily on your home time! We hope you will take a minute or two to answer a few questions which will be used to form referrals that will build our web presence. Stay tuned for more details, and feel free to contact Mr. Walz with questions.

St. John Students Stay in Shape This Summer

Get ready for St. John’s Summer Enrichment Program! We want our students to stay in shape over the summer and this is a great way to do it! Students can participate by tracking reading minutes, physical activity minutes, and skills workbook pages. The Summerbook order has now been placed. If you would still like to order, you must do that on your own and pay all applicable shipping charges. All the students who participate in this summer program will be able to participate in the special recognition party once school begins in the fall. NEW: Information will soon be shared for our returning preschool students to be able to participate!

Consider Camp Lutherhaven

Are you ready? Get set…GO! Summer camp is almost here! It’s not too late to register and there are many great programs for grades kindergarten through high school! Camp Lutherhaven is a place where you can experience how awesome God is while enjoying his creation, fun, and fellowship! Experience what it means to “take up (our) cross daily and follow (Him).” Register online today at www.lutherhaven.org, or call for more information at 260-636-7101.

All St. John girls recently received a special invitation to our fourth Mother-Daughter Tea that will be held on Saturday afternoon, May 24, from 2-4 p.m. This should be a special time for girls and their moms, or other special lady in their life! Reservations must be made by THIS THURSDAY, MAY 16th.

Graduation

With the change to our end of the year calendar, one thing that is not changing is our graduation date. St. John will still hold graduation for our ten 8th grade students on Thursday, May 29. Whether you have a graduate or not, we hope that you will plan attend this special night in the life of the St. John family.

Snow Day Make Up Plan

The final 2 days will be made up on Monday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 3. Our end of the year events, like the awards assembly and end of the year chapel will be adjusted and new dates will be communicated soon. As always, thanks to the parents who shared their input as we evaluated our options in making this decision.

The next (and FINAL) Hungry Howie’s Day is THIS Tuesday, May 13.

Parents of voucher students need to come in to the office to complete your application for next year. The process takes about 10 minutes with Mrs. Thiem. You will need a copy of your 2013 tax return.

Congratulations to the following students for being recognized as a SERVANT student last week: Samantha Schroeder, Katie Walker, Ethan Kessler, Emma Erne, Asher Jannuzzello, Abi McLeod, Bethy Stewart, Alex Padilla, Sahil Patel, Nathan Walz, Cameryn Proxmire, Olivia Tibbs, Naomi Schroeder, Hunter Bolen, Hunter Shire, Lauren Diehm, Kaitlyn McKenzie, Alaina Watson, and Santiago Espinoza.

We give thanks to God for these students who let their light shine before others.

‘Tis May, the month of blooming things

Of budding trees, the bird that sings.

Our lawns will brighten with colorful cheer

To tell us all that summer’s near.

But some must live in a world that’s dark

Their colors are drab; no flowers, no park.

They yearn for something to brighten their day

So in their isolated darkness their world does not stay.

This month I am asking for anything bright

A pretty washcloth, a ball, or flashlight.

Send it in with a hope and a prayer

That some child will love it ----- somewhere.

The world that they live in is foreign to us

Anything we send them, they will make a fuss!

The smiles on their faces as they open with joy,

Their shoeboxes filled with our love and a toy.

Anything else that you think fits the bill

Can be placed in the collection box each month as well.

In the lobby you’ll find it upon the floor

Just lift its lid and fill it galore!!
