Number 22

Over 82, 000. Over 100 million. The big game was last night (too bad it wasn’t a closer game). Over 82, 000 people watched the game live and over 100 million around the world watched the game on TV. There were 2 types of people watching: fans and followers. The larger group of people was the fans: fans of football, fans of the spectacle, fans of the commercials, fans of Bruno Mars. They wanted all the benefits of the game, with little real commitment to either team. The smaller group of people was the followers. These were the people that had stuck with their teams through the bad years and had travelled across the country for the game. They had a much higher level of commitment. Who do you think got more out of the game? Both enjoyed it (not counting the final score!), but the followers got more out of it.

In our Christian life, there are also fans and followers. As in football, the fans are those who want the benefits of the Christian life, but without true commitment. Fans show up for church once in a while, give an offering when there is some money left at the end of the month, and help out with church projects occasionally. They don’t really give a lot, and they don’t get much in return.

The smaller group of people is the followers. They are the ones who are committed to Jesus and live their life based on that commitment. They give much more, and they get much more in return.

So, who are you? Not in the game of football, but in the game of life. Both fans of Christ and followers of Christ are valued. But, clearly, the followers give more and get more.

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

Where will you be 3 months from tonight: Saturday, May 3? At the St. John Spring Auction. Please mark your calendar now and plan to attend. Please also be thinking of whom you would like to ask to join you. This fun evening includes an excellent dinner, awesome silent auction items, and a lively live auction.

The auction is a major fundraiser for our school. It requires a great deal of work to make it a success. This year’s auction committee is co-chaired by Jenna Anderson and Sarah Moreland. Working with them is Angie Malone, a veteran of several auctions. More help is needed. If you would like to join these ladies for the work, and the fun, please contact the school office.

Science Fair Approaching!

It’s time to think about starting a Science Fair project! The teachers have the information packets or you can get them in the office.

This is a great opportunity for your child to explore an area of interest and learn new things! If you have questions see Mr. Schroeder. The Science Fair projects will be due on Monday, February 17 (note the date change) and will be judged at that time. The projects will be displayed to the public on the night of our Showcase on March 7.

If you need a display board you can get one from the office. The boards are 32” high and 36” wide and are available first come-first served. You can make your check out to “St. John PTL”. Each board is $5.50.

School Make Up Days

At this point in time we have added in several snow make-up days (listed below). We are also considering whether we will need to use Good Friday, one or more Saturdays, or some of Spring Break as make-up days. The state Board of Education is also discussing whether additional waivers will be granted. We will continue to explore every option to make up these days and provide our students the important instructional time that they need. For now, school will be in session on the following snow make up days:

Monday, February 17

Friday, March 28

Friday, May 30

Monday, June 2

Tuesday, June 3

Wednesday, June 4

Then, you can click the “Share This Video” button to email the video to a relative, friend, neighbor, or co-worker. We have a good supply of bumper stickers advertising our school and would like to distribute them to interested parents. If you would like to show your support of our school in this way, please contact Mrs. Thiem for your free sticker!

St. John Showcase 2014!!

We are gearing up for St. John Showcase 2014!!! Slated for Friday evening, March 7th, the Showcase is a great opportunity for students to do just that – showcase their God-given talents and abilities!

St. John Showcase 2014 provides an opportunity for students to share their God-given gifts and abilities in areas such as art, music, dance, drama, etc. Last year’s event was a very positive experience for many of our students, and we are hoping to make this year’s event even better. Please contact Mrs. Meyer now if you are willing to help. A flyer with more information was sent home last week. February 21st is the deadline to return the sign-up form.

Our students are now 1 week into the Mad Ants Get Fit Challenge. Students are encouraged to complete 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Those that complete this challenge for 30 days will earn a ticket to the Mad Ants game on March 1. Student should return their log sheets each Thursday. Keep up the good work!

TinCaps Reading Program

In addition to getting physical fit with the Mad Ants, our students can also get brain fit with the TinCaps Reading Program. This popular program is back again this year. By reaching their goals our students can make their way around the bases and hit a home run, earning a free ticket to the TinCaps game on April 6. Your child should have received information last week and the program runs the month of February.

New Teacher Call

Yesterday St. John congregation extended a Divine Call to Miss Megan Stites to become 2nd grade teacher here at St. John. Miss Stites will be covering Mrs. Buuck’s maternity leave as she is due in May and desires to remain at home for the next year. We pray that God would direct Miss Stites as she considers our Call and determines if God is leading her to become a teacher here.

Walmart Kroger Dairy Queen Shell

BP Dietrich’s Walgreens CVS

Applebees Home Depot Summer’s Stories Maria’s

These are just a few of the retailers for which we stock scrip. When you purchase a SCRIP card a percentage of the face value is credited back to you. It really is that simple!

Kids Against Hunger

Have you ever gone to bed hungry? No, I mean really hungry? Around the world, 1 in 7 people go to bed starving each night. One in six children worldwide die before they turn 5 from malnutrition and other related conditions. Our chapel offering for the 2nd Trimester will support Kids Against Hunger (www.kah-fortwayne.org) in bringing highly nutritious meals to needy children all over the world. Plus, our children will take part in an event in April to actually pack these meals. Your child has already received materials to help them collect money at home for their chapel offering.

If you notice our faculty and staff wearing their comfy jeans and sweatshirts on Fridays, it is for a good cause. They will be paying to wear their comfy clothes to support our chapel offering Kids Against Hunger. Stay tuned for special announcements where the kids can pay to wear their favorite things to help this worthwhile cause.
