The Principal’s Pen

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.

John 15:12

Have to or get to? In just a few short words we are faced with an interesting question. A question that focuses on the foundation of whether you are being required to do something (have to) or allowed to do it (get to). Maybe you’ve had a parent, teacher, coach, or boss who made you do certain things. Have you resented it; found yourself grumbling; tried to get out of it? Likewise, have you ever had a parent, teacher, coach, or boss who has given you freedom and allowed you to make certain choices and decisions? Did you feel differently about these two approaches?

When we think about obeying God we often begin to grumble and complain about all His rules. In other words, we are looking at it from a ‘have to’ perspective. While God does command us to follow His laws, He also sent Jesus to fulfill those laws completely. Remembering that can help shift our perspective from have to to get to. We get to love God because God loved us first. We get to share the love that God has for us with others. We get to love others by responding to God’s love for us. We get to obey God’s command to love because of His incredible love for us first.

The ‘get to’ perspective makes obeying God more of a response than a requirement. Because of all of the amazing things God has done for me, I get to respond with obedience and love.

Seeking to reach all with Christ, St. John Lutheran School partners with families to provide a Christ-centered education which nurtures faith in Christ,

promotes discipleship, develops God-given abilities and skills,

and encourages academic excellence.

Paper Banners Coming To an End

Starting Monday, October 1, we will no longer send paper copies of the Banner home with every family. The Banner can be accessed on our website: www.stjohneagles.org. If you would still like to receive a paper copy of the Banner please let the office know and we will gladly send a copy home with your child.

The biggest fundraiser of the year for our Parent-Teacher League is Kendallville’s Apple Festival. It takes many helping hands to make this project a success. Sixteen people are needed for each shift at the Fairgrounds, and an additional 5 volunteers are needed Downtown!

A big thank you to all of you who have signed up already to work at this year’s Apple Festival! However, lots of help is still needed!!! If you are unsure what volunteering would entail, please speak with Mrs. Thiem. WE EXPECT ALL ST. JOHN FAMILIES TO BE INVOLVED WITH THE FESTIVAL! IT TAKES US ALL TO ACCOMPLISH THIS TASK! PLEASE DECIDE HOW YOU CAN HELP. IF YOU HAVE YET TO RESPOND, AN ADDITIONAL FORM IS BEING SENT YOUR WAY. PLEASE RESPOND! WE NEED EVERYONE!

Lots of coolers will be needed to store apples and eggs for the Festival. If you would allow us to borrow yours, plan on dropping the cooler off at school on Wednesday, October 3. THANKS!!

Also needed are cash donations to be

used to purchase fritter ingredients.

Send your donation to the school office

if you would like to help.

Please remember in prayer…

Elementary Spell Bowl

Mrs. Summer Moser will again coach our Elementary Spell Bowl team. Students in grades 4 and 5 are encouraged to get involved! Their practices will be on Wednesdays and started last week. Practices will run from 3:00 – 4:00.

The competition at the Elementary level will be in mid-November. Students who are interested, but may have missed the first practice, are encouraged to contact Mrs. Moser and attend Wednesday’s practice. For more information, please call Mrs. Moser at 349-8217.

SCRIP can save you money! Please stop in the office any time and purchase some SCRIP cards. The percentage that the school receives back from your purchases helps provide for the education of your children. Plus, St. John credits half of that percentage back to the account of your choosing back at St. John. The school wins and you win!

Facts Tuition Management System

We understand that family situations change over the course of the year. If your family’s financial situation changes and you need to adjust your FACTS agreement please let the office know. We can easily arrange for you to make an advance payment or to adjust your payment plan. Please notify us 10 days prior to your payment date in order to process the change.

Family, Fun, and Fitness

St. John families have 2 opportunities coming up for fun and fitness. On Sunday, Oct. 14, at 2:00 at Bixler Lake, Common Grace Ministries will be hosting their 1 Mile/5K Love Run. St. John is supporting Common Grace with our chapel offerings for the first trimester and we are looking for additional ways to partner with them. There is no entry fee for this race, but a free will donation is appreciated. On Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2:00 at Bixler Lake Lutheran Life Villages will be hosting their Tot Trot/2K/5K. St. John students receive $5 off on their registration fees. Registration forms are available in the school office. Both of these events are great opportunities to support local charities and have some family fun and fitness.

Shoebox News!

Are you packing your shoebox? OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD uses simple, gift-filled shoe boxes to let hurting children know they are loved and to share the message of the greatest gift they can ever receive – Jesus Christ.

The collection of these shoeboxes will be upon us before we know it – the week of November 12th. St. John will serve as a regional collection site this year! What an opportunity God has provided for us to minister to so many children around the globe!

For now, continue to collect new items suitable for a shoebox for a needy child. Most of the children who receive these boxes have never before received a gift, so even the smallest of items to us is such a blessing to them! Mrs. Thiem can provide lots of ideas for you, and brochures about the project will be coming home with your student next month.

I will be looking for volunteers to help man the drop-off site at designated times the week of November 12. Please respond favorably!
